In this episode, the bad guy is the corrupt sherif of Mournful. He has no hesitation about killing a honest truck driver who refused to partake in his traficking and covers up the murder as suicide. When he gets in town, Walker finds the population scared and hostile and his suspicions are confirmed when a border police oficer testifies : Another outlawed town was the subject of a very me- morable period show in the 2000s : Deadwood. Picking that location (a gold diggers camp illegally set in Indian territory) and the period (the years 1876-1877) begets a depiction of the progressive integration of that border town in the United States, through what is the annexa- tion of what is still known, at that time, as the Territory of Dakota. The show excels in showing the violence, the immorality and the injus- tice that still reign in Dead- wood : the bloody settling of scores are frequent, pros- titution and corruption are commonplace. But it also is narrating carefully a pro- gressive organization of the community, that choose, for instance to appoint a sherif (1.12). 05 Walker : Parlez-nous de Mournful. If the decade of the 1950s is significantly impacted by a western treatment of the border that, as weve seen, will remain well beyond the 20th century, its also the de- cade that ofers, in its final year, the broadcast of the first serialized fiction specifically dealing with contemporary border areas issues : Border Patrol (1959). The depiction of the border as a setting for crime and danger is already fully detailed. Through the course of the 34 episodes, the hero, deputy chief of the border patrol, flies of to Flo- rida, Arizona, New Orleans or Canada, to dismantle ille- gal immigration rings (mostly), or drug and gun smugglers (less commonly). Two episodes of Border Patrol are notable for their political theme (1.2 and 1.7) : in both cases, the victim is a refugee that seeked asylum to the United States, and who is threatened by the authorities of the dictatorship he (or she) got away from. These sto- ries, inspired by the Cold War background, reveal that the travails faced by the United States dont have a domestic origin anymore (Native Americans, Mexican bandits, etc.) but also have a more distant origin : communism, a glo- bal threat. YOU DONT SEE MANY PIRATES THESE DAYS , TITLE OF EPISODE 10.2 OF HAWAII 5.0 It is, then, obvious that TV shows are getting away from the exploration of the border areas, or ignore the borde- ring aspect of a territory altogether. For instance, in The Fugitive (1963-1967), Richard Kimble travels through the country, and several episodes find him in towns near the Mexican border (1.27, 2.10, 2.18, 3.24 ) but that proximity plays no part in the story. Similarly, in Hawaii 5-0 (1968- 1980), theres next to no episode showing the archipelago BORDERS IN SERIES - SMUGGLERS AND KILLERS LA DCENNIE 1950 EST MARQUE PAR UN TRAITEMENT WESTERNIEN DE LA FRONTIRE THE DECADE OF 1950 IS SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACTED BY A WESTERN TREATMENT OF THE BORDER 06 De mme, dans Hawaii 5.0 (1968- 1980), presque aucun pisode ne montre larchipel comme parti- culirement expos aux trafics (1.7, 11.21), la corruption ou dautres maux dont peuvent soufrir des rgions loignes, dificiles contrler, la fois isoles et soumises de multi- ples influences extrieures. Bref, si New York nest pas un poste-frontire au sens strict (mais tout de mme une porte dentre sur le territoire amricain), la mga- pole est bien reprsente, son tour, comme une zone grise. as particularly vulnerable to traficking (1.7, 11.21), cor- ruption or other ills other insular areas may sufer from, ills that are hard to regulate, both isolated and exposed to multiple external influences. For instance, when the show deals with acts of piracy, its in its 10th season and to remind us, as stated earlier, of the rarity of such inci- dents. Nevertheless, the Hawaii islands, located nearly 3000 miles from the California coast, can be seen as a gray area . Thats the choice the remake (2010-) makes, where, to cite examples from the first season, we cross Chinese and Serbian smugglers, Filipino and Russian ter- rorists, corrupted policemen, a drug cartel and pirates. If borders are not of interest to writers and network exe- cutives in the 1970s, its also because they are clearly replaced by the great decaying Northeastern cities, with New York to the forefront, seen as the city of all misde- meanors and violence. In Serpico (1976-1977), the short-li- ved show adapted from the movie of the same name, the heros investigations lead him to drug and gun rings, a network of Serbian smugglers, and especially avowed corruption of the politicians and the police (though not as characterized as in the movie). In other words, if New York is not a border city by definition (though it is a point of entry into the American territory), the megalopolis is well represented as a gray area . In the 1980s, a tentative synthesis is executed in Miami Vice (1984-1989). On one hand, we still are in a port metro- polis, rather than alongside a terrestrial border, and we might add that Miami Vice is thematically close to Serpi- co : undercover cops cracking down on traficking (most- ly drug traficking in the Florida-set show) and exposing corruption scandals. On the other side, as it is functio- ning as an interface between the United States and Latin America, Miami is just as much, or more of a bordertown as San Diego or El Paso. The matters of immigrants and refugees are ofen dealt with, and the serial killer trope is recurring (1.15, 2.2, 2.15, 3.15, etc), conspiracies of political assassinations are numerous. In a word, all the characteristics of future border-set shows for decades to come are found. More generally, Miami Vice heralds the return of the border as a crucial area where economical, political, cultural and human stakes intersect that are of relevance to the future of the country. However, for the border to regain its status as the area where all tensions collide, we have to be reminded of its mysterious properties. Thats what Twin Peaks (1991-93) does, using the other American border, that separates it from Canada. By using two interloping locations (the One Eyed Jack, casino and brothel located on the other side of the border), and unsavoury characters (the bro- thers Renault, involved in a transborder drug ring). The show uses that as a gateway to do a fantasy approach, where borders, lines (the forest, the Black Lodge), are ta- king us closer to supernatural realities. Once both of those borders are born, the place is set for all the contemporary border and crossborder shows to exist. Well deal with it in the next issue of Borders in Series . Can it be that six decades of creation of all kinds, buil- ding the universe of TV-series as we know it, are in fact insignificant in the end? Indeed, a single time period could be enough to define the standard practice. Dont look further, you only need to taste the Golden Age and forget the rest. A quoi bon ? In its 22nd issue, Sofilm recounted the emergence of HBO, the cable channel, whose three letters appearing on a grey snowy background nurtured, and is still nurtu- ring, an always more abundant audience. The article, in- terspersed with interviews of people who witnessed the beginning of the paid broadcaster is very interesting. But dont even try to find something about the confrontation with the rest of the series history, lasting for half a cen- tury. What for? We all know that was the Golden Age and Tony Sopranos adventures are the only one that ought to be on your screen! WHICH GOLDEN AGE?! History of television programs goes back to a little ear- lier than November the 8th, 1972 (date of HBOs launch). During the 50s, television became more and more acces- sible and the medium came in the center of new experi- mentations regarding the two fields it was then trying to blend: theater and radio. Until the mid-1960s, American broadcasting was in its first Golden Age. As I said in an earlier article about the anthology, this time knew a lot of emblematic series, such as Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Twilight Zone. Numerous adaptations of classical plays were on top, but writers such as Gore Vidal, Paddy Chayefsky, Rod Serling or the young Woody Allen created original and significant works such as Mar- ty that will later be adapted for film (and Oscar-winner). On screen, people discovered or rediscovered actors like James Dean, Grace Kelly, Paul Newman or Lee Grant. They were then under the direction of George Schaefer, Sidney Lumet, John Frankenheimer or Yul Brynner. SO WE CAN GET OVER THE GOLDEN AGE THEORY Ctait lge dor. It was the Golden Age, the time of all successes, of all innovations and successful attempts. All along the 2000s, HBO brought about a revolution in the TV sector, by stringing together the demanding, innovative and ofen bothering creations. Generation of viewers will remember this time mar- ked by the emergency of live-shows. Video-support did not exist yet, and actors were working in a lot diferent way than they are today. Despite ofen static shots and contents that were ofen modified to please sponsors, that were be so invasive as to be included in the names of the shows (The Goodyear TV Playhouse, The Texaco Star Theater, The US Steel Hour), the dynamic of this time will always stay in peoples minds. In his book entitled Televisions Second Golden Age and, as the name states, Robert J. Thompson, teacher at the Syracuse University, diferentiates another time period that can be worth special attentions. At the beginning of the 80s, networks started to apprehend the signifi- cance of cable channels. A quarter of American homes had subscribed by then. A new doctrine gradually came: the idea to create content destined to a specific kind of audience, and no more to a whole. Thompson is not fooled, the 80s are represented by K 2000 and many other stuf. But he emphasizes the signifi- cant role of NBC, then under the guidance of an inspired patron: Grant Tinker, who broadcasted in 1981 this qua- lity trio: the dramas Hill Street Blues and St Elsewhere, but also the comedy Cheers. At CBS, he remembers Cagney & Lacey for its duet of actresses that redefined the role of women on TV. He then speaks about the importance of Moonlighting on ABC, that is the origin of a genre that will become signifi- cant: the dramedy. Texaco Star Theater SO WE CAN GET OVER THE GOLDEN AGE THEORY 12 En 2013, Kevin Spacey est invit prononcer un speech lEdinburgh International Television Festival. In 2013, Kevin Spacey is asked to make a speech at the Edinburgh International Television Festival. He pleads for his new fav: Netflix; and talks about a certain Brett Mar- tin. Martin is not a real TV-critic. As a reporter for GQ, he followed the making of The Sopranos and belie- ves it to be revolutionary. He goes beyond these series and releases a book (Dificult Men, behind the scenes of a creative revolution) in which he talks about a third Golden Age, emphasizing the first production of HBO, and the two main titles of AMC: Mad Men and Breaking Bad. Martin is not the first to talk about a contemporary Gol- den Age. Indeed, Alan Sepinwall already talked about one in 2012 (The Revolution was Televised), defending a larger vision, including Friday Night Lights. Martin, as for him, chose to highlight the dominant theme of this Gol- den Age: the emergence of anti-heroes. Kevin Spacey / Edinburgh International Television Festival SO WE CAN GET OVER THE GOLDEN AGE THEORY 13 LA NOSTALGIE EST-ELLE DE MISE ? It is legitimate to wonder about the multiplication of Golden Ages. Maybe the phrase loses its meaning when it doesnt refer to an exception anymore and becomes associated with several time periods. It is essential to go back to the roots! Originally, it refers to the myth of the first age of Huma- nity as told by Hesiod (source). It became later used to refer to an apex that is over as we speak. It is also used to talk about a glorious past that is now out of our reach, the phrase has then a nostalgic dimension that implies a regret not to be able to benefit from it. The phrase can- not be got round in cultural singing. There is a Golden Age for Hollywood film, comic books, Dutch painting, al- pinism, etc. We must admit, no matter our favorites, that the history of series has been no bed of roses, and this inconsistency needs to be characterized. A first assessment is needed. The three time periods SO WE CAN GET OVER THE GOLDEN AGE THEORY Kyle Chandler et Connie Britton / Friday Night Lights 14 tre caractrise. Allez dire Charlie Brooker, le crateur de Black Mirror, que lanthologie navait de raison dtre que cinquante ans plus tt. admitted as Golden Ages are perfectly dissimilar and it would have been smarter to follow the historic example all the way and talk about Bronze Age, for instance. But I have to admit that it is a lot less sexy! Lets admit this multi- plicity. I have to confess that it is not what bo- thers me the most in the use of that phrase. As we stated a little ear- lier, talking about Gol- den Age is saying that everything that was made before became impoverished. Even if we had proof of this loss of quality, the other Gol- den Ages refute the first afirmation. If we take the three time periods we talked about earlier, you will notice that the use of the phrase can be more or less justified, compared to what follows. It is true that afer the 60s, dramas disappeared from the Live channel. On the same manner, broadcaster were not able to pro- duce such risk-taking afer the 80s. But we will obviously agree that it is another debate. Moreover, the current series probably will continue with anti-heroes. It will be dificult to watch the adventures of another Tony Sopra- no but, who knows? And why should we take this even- tuality away? SO WE CAN GET OVER THE GOLDEN AGE THEORY PARLER DUN GE DOR, CEST AFFIRMER QUE CE QUI PRCDE SEST APPAUVRIT TALKING ABOUT GOLDEN AGE IS SAYING THAT EVERYTHING THAT WAS MADE BEFORE BECAME IMPOVERISHED Toby Kebbel / Black Mirror 15 Allez dire Bryan Fuller, showrun- ner dHannibal, quil ny a plus rien dintressant faire sur les networks depuis prs de 20 ans. Go say to Charlie Brooker, the crea- tor of Black Mirror, that his anthology should have been made fify years ago. Go say to Bryan Fuller, show-run- ner of Hannibal, that there has been nothing interesting on channels for 20 years. Go say to Steven Soderbergh that his character of John Thackery in The Knick is, no matter what, doomed to stay in the shadow of Tony Sopra- no! My knowledge on series is limited but if I had the opportunity to access a full knowledge in the future (a dear dream), I refuse to simply become blas, as the one that believes he has seen everything. It is undeniable that ABCs Revenge, which began its four- th season earlier this month, has gone to great lengths to set-up what may perhaps be considered the shows fan favorite ship (or couple): Emily Thorne (born Amanda Clark; portrayed by Emily VanCamp) and Jack Porter. From flashbacks of the duo meeting as child- ren, Jack growing up to name his sailboat afer she di- sappeared from his life and now to the more current sporadic glances from afar; this genuine shared history between Amanda and Jack, is one that any characters introduced in the future as love interests for either will always lack. Head over to Twitter on a on any given day and one is likely to see tweets stating things along the lines of Jack and Amanda are end game. As any Re- venger knows all too well, NOTHING is simple in The Hamptons; and when discussing this pairing with Jack Porter himself, Nick Wechsler (Its Always Sunny in Phila- delphia, Roswell), he had a lot to say against the couple getting together just yet. Dont worry too much, Amanda and Jack shippers; he had a great reason for his opinion. RIEN NEST SIMPLE DANS LES HAMPTONS INTERVIEW DE NICK WECHSLER 18 Bonjour ! Hi. Good morning! Thanks so much for sitting down with me today. Hi, of course. Its no problem at all. Thanks for taking the time. I recently found out that you got into acting because you wanted to be in comedy. If you could be on any comedy right now, which would like to be on? Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia, I think. Judging by your tweets alone, you have a great sense of humor, would you ever want to host an episode of Saturday Night Live? I used to want to be a cast member on SNL. That was before I wanted to be an ac- tor actor, which I am actually still not sure I want to be. I got started because I wanted to be in comedy, because there were pressures as a dramatic actor that wouldnt be there if I were a comedic actor. A part of me is still jealous of the comedic actors, the dramatic part of me is jealous. Yeah, but basically, I cant imagine it right now, but maybe if things go particularly wellI would do that, absolutely. By the way, an old roommate of mine is ac- tually on there now. No way! Yeah, Taran Killam. Hes a great impressionist and wri- terhe has come up with a lot of great skits. Hes one of the guys who does the Brad Pitt impressions. He and I lived together for a little while and he one day he was asking me if I wanted to go with him to something. He was always hilarious, but so he was going somewhere where people who ofen get on the show go to train. Il y avait beaucoup doc- And I remember told him I wasnt going to go with him that time. And then later on, he went on to SNL. Im not saying had I gone Id have gotten on the show too, Im just saying that a friend of mine was driven enough to go pursue that specific path. He ended up succeeding and he reached a childhood dream of mine of being on SNL which is really great and I am proud of him. Thats great. I actually have seen him on the show and he does great. Yeah, he does. Would you be able to make fun of any of your cast mates for a skit? I think so, I guess because in those instances, by the time we see it air, the host of the show has been able to call their friends and just be like, Listenwere going to spoof you. So give them a heads up. Yeah, give them a heads up and ideally they would see it as an honor rather than a harsh skewering. True. So you recently joined some of the Roswell cast for a reunion in Los Angeles, whats your best memory on the set of Roswell? Thats a hard one; there are just so many great ones. There are a lot of them really. They sort of bleed together because I remember we were all always laughing. All of us just constantly made each other laugh. For me, that was sort of before I even took acting seriously. For audi- tioning, I was very professional but I wasnt like a serious dramatic actor. I just did weird shit to entertain myself. There was a lot of that and so I was a larger presence in the blooper reel. All I did in the blooper reel was that I IL A RALIS LUN DE MES RVES DENFANT, FAIRE PARTIE DE LMISSION HE REACHED A CHILDHOOD DREAM OF MINE OF BEING ON STARUDAY NIGHT LIVE NOTHINGS SIMPLE IN THE HAMPTONS 20 casions et donc je suis trs prsent dans les btisiers. Merde, a cest dur. Les seuls films de superhros que jai repeat the same phrase: Oh f*** my flys open or so- mething. I would just blurt out something, just a curse because Im mad at myself. On Roswell, I would say things to get the other person to break. Seems a bit carefree, since everyone was so young. Exactly. Are you still in touch with any of the Roswell actors? Yes, I am. I used to hang out with Brendan [Fehr] a lot more. Majandra [Delfino] and I see each other from time to time, I do want to hang out with her more because I remember it was always hysterical and shes just a very good person. Colin [Hanks] too, we always got along great and wed go see movies together, like Tenacious D. I remember we saw High Fidelity together because we were both big Jack Black fans. This was all before I really even grew up. Yeah, not in contact as much as before but Id like to be. Emily VanCamp, who plays Amanda Clark on Revenge, was also in Marvels Captain America: The Winter Sol- dier as Sharon Carter/Agent 13; if you had the choice to play any superhero, which one would you want to be? And why? Shit, thats hard. The only superhero movies that real- ly do it for me are the newest Batman movies and Watchmen. Not only because of Christopher Nolans ap- proach to Batman but also that there are so many who arent actually super. I totally understand. Theyre vigilantes. Yeah, they are just dudes who are vigilante justice. In Watchmen there are only a few that are super. I dont know if I could do it because it has already been done so well by Christian Bale and in the case of The Watchmen you dont get any better than what Jackie Earle Haley did for Rorschach. Rorschach is so awesome, very true. Whats your favo- rite part about the Revenge cast? With table reads and filming schedules that can go on until the next day, most casts understandably somehow seem to end up described as a family unit; do you feel that way about the Revenge cast? Yes, absolutely we all just went to a movie on Saturday, literally everyone except Henry who is currently out of town filming a movie. We all get along incredibly well. Last night I was trying to read the script for episode two, and there was huge fight going on my phone because we are all like text chained together. Text chains are a good thing for planning things like that, its a good thing. Yeah. Whos your personal favorite character on Revenge and why? Well, thats a tough one too actually, because I have always loved Emily. Emily maybe has to generally get pushed for it to come natu- rally. And she does come of as very natural because its her characters show. I see clarity of purpose for her cha- racter. I think its cool. This NOTHINGS SIMPLE IN THE HAMPTONS 22 Revenge Season 2 Wrap Party de trs nature. Oui, sil ny a pas de conflit dintrt. ce stade, cest juste pour aider une personne que jaime survivre. little girl whose father was taken from her, but yet she has this innocence too. She has an innocence which she almost loses. She is working hard for her goal, because she is so heartbroken that she turned to vengeance to right this wrong. I think its awesome. Nolans character which Gabriel [Mann] has given such a unique characte- rization, its great. I like my character too obviously, he was the audiences favorite and now were seeing him change. I have also really loved Amanda, Margarita [Le- vieva] plays her with such an amazing vulnerability but also some dread. I think I have always really liked Aiden [Barry Sloane]. Aiden has mindlessly been trained to be a killer and to be a revenger. He is kind of what I wish Jack was, a bit tougher. So stronger in a physical aspect in that sense, where he is able to take on certain missions of a sort and just get it done? Well yeah, but Jack doesnt take that much action be- cause he has to be kept pure. And in real life, for some- body who has been dumped on as much as he has, or tricked as much as he has, then the audience just goes, Wait a minute, maybe Jacks an idiot! Hes not skeptical yet, he is so trusting. But Aiden is very cynical, he has a darker sensibility. If someone hurts Emily, Aiden like will charge him and beat the shit out of him. Jack on the other hand, is so considerate and consi- ders the consequences. Its almost less romantic to me. So I think Aiden is it. So youd step in? Yeah, if theres no moral conflict there. At that point, now, Im just helping someone I love survive. JACK EST RAISONNABLE, IL PSE LE POUR ET LE CONTRE JACK IS SO CONSIDERATE AND HE CONSIDERS THE CONSEQUENCES INTERVIEW WITH NICK WECHSLER 23 Jack a eu un arc narratif tellement dur que beaucoup de tlspectateurs esprent quil va avoir droit son happy end. On ne leur a pas montr quils taient faits Jack has had one of the toughest storylines on the show and many viewers are hoping Jack ends up with his much deserved happily ever afer; which is a bit amu- sing since were talking about a show called Revenge. Do you think Jack will eventually be with Emily? Or do you think the writers will have him fall for someone else? Good question. I mean, Im not a big advocate of the idea of them getting together. Oh really? Thats interesting! I dont think they should end up together, but I think that we should always want them to end up together. Interestingso keep an open door available or so- mething? Yeah. I think everyone is rooting for them because of their history. We went pretty far back in the Aiden path last season and then people started to root for them a bit. And Im like UH OH, because we are so down that storylines path that nowwe basically didnt continue to remind the audience of the Jack and Emily thing. We didnt show them kind of belonging as much. And now NOTHINGS SIMPLE IN THE HAMPTONS 24 Nick Wechsler (Jack Porter) et Emily VanCamp (Amanda Clarke) / Revenge lun pour lautre. Oui. that Aiden is gone, we are just lef with Jack. And rather than showing it at all, we have to be to like Hey, I know that the other guy died, but like remember Jack? Lets start getting with him now! Couple more flashbacks should do it. Exactly. I hope so. I think its always important, but the more you representlook at how much of their scenes have been about them feeling this special way about each other. Season one didnt really show it, season two he was with someone he thought was her, maybe occasio- nally they have these looks across the room, like, that girl there is pretty f***k**g cool. Then last season he was with someone else and she was with Aiden, people are still rooting for them together because of seasons one and two, my point is look at how much people are roo- ting for them when we havent even thrown them a bone in a while. We just need to remind the audience of their connec- tion. If there was anyone new that was introduced, even if he was in anyway like Jack, they still wouldnt have that shared history. That history is what they are rooting for and so, yeah. The problem is that you have to consider what youre showing morally, if she goes out and tries to get revenge the whole time and then just finishes and ex- pects Jack to be there at the end. I dont think he should be there. I think that would be a consequence to this love she has imagined and protected for so long. I think if she abandons revenge and stops, I could see her ending up with Jack. Thats an interesting point, goes along with his charac- ters goodness. Yeah. SI EMILY DECIDE DARRTER DE SE VENGER, JE POURRAIS LA VOIR FINIR AVEC JACK IF EMILY ABANDONS REVENGE AND STOPS, I COULD SEE HER ENDING UP WITH JACK INTERVIEW WITH NICK WECHSLER 25 Si Revenge introduisait un nouveau personnage pour Jack, quel serait votre casting idal ? Oh merde, jai jamais pens a. If Revenge were to introduce someone new for Jack, who would your dream casting be? Like for a love interest? Yeah, for a love interest. Is there anyone you can think of who youd like to work with perhaps? Oh shit, I havent thought of that. Its weird; I dont know why Ive never thought about that! I dont know why, Ive never had to consider this before. HmmIm trying to think of people my age. Hmm, I dunno. I actually cant answer that, thats hard. Can you think of some people? I cant right now either, its early. Its alright, Ill tweet this question to you a couple months from now Ill just tweet it to you to bring it back up. Good. Do it. Jack has many scenes with Margaux LeMarchal, have you learned any French words from Karine Vanasse? If so, what? Hah, um no. I dont think she ever properly told me any- thingbut I do know the proper pronunciation of her name. The last part almost sounds like the word mouse. If she wouldnt have said it then I probably would have never known the right way. I unfortunately dont speak French either, but many of the readers of More TV do. It was interesting to see the last name and I did initially stumble over it myself. Im not even sure if its even straight forward French, it mi- ght have been mixed with some other culture but Id have never known had she not said it that way. How do you feel about your character overall? Weve seen him come quite a long way from possibly sailing to Haiti in season one, to the return of his mother and now being taken in for questioning regarding Char- lottes kidnapping in Season 3, he doesnt really seem to catch a break! Yeah I know! Hes a good guy. Hes too good for his own good, BUT I do think that him being the one that we sort of always root for Emily to be with is good; hes the best character, and hurting him is the best way to afect Emily. Its also the best way to show the efects of her choices. Which is why I think her just getting him in the end isnt right. Especially afer she completely f**ks with his life, if she continues with her revenge, then no. Like I can only have you break my heart so many times, before I give up on the idea of us. Youve basically become a diferent person, holding on to this ideabut I think this girl is suf- focated by her revenge. Everyone else on the show is sort of whacking the hornets nest with a stick. So everyone else may get stung, but you are like OH YEAH, wait! Jack is begging her to stop doing what she is doing. Jack is the best way to the show the efects of Emilys choices. I think thats his function. I think thats cool, not just me- taphorically, but because his character is a cool device. Yeah, nothings simple in The Hamptons. Yeah, exactly. Et a signifie beaucoup pour moi : Since Emily revealed who she really was to Jack, over the course of the third season, we see Jack becoming more and more involved in her agenda. Is that the case you think well be seeing in Season 4that is if youre allowed to comment on anything about it right now? You know, I actually dont know. My guess isI actually dont knowbecause where were starting from is that Graysons gone and Victoria is an institution. So its kind of like, what is there to even help Emily with? So, right now I can almost guarantee that Jack is going to get drawn in and will want to help herbut I wont be happy to help. It will still probably happeneventually. I think itll be easier for Jack to help her this time compared to before because this time, if its someone coming afer herlike, if she was just going around hurting people and revenging, Id just be like this is ridiculous, no. But if someones coming afer her, its diferent. Get in the action when she needs Jacks help, makes sense. And lastly, is there anything else youd like to NOTHINGS SIMPLE IN THE HAMPTONS 28 Mike Kelley, Elizabeth Barnes et Corbin Bronson, tous ont pari sur moi et mont permis de faire partie de cette srie. Oui, sans problme. say to all the readers and viewers of Revenge? Well, just a huge thanks. I think this is the first thing I have been a part of, that people have been really enthu- siastic about. And its meant a lot to me, like Mike Kelly, Elizabeth Barnes and Corbin Bronson, all took a chance on me and allowed me to be part of the show. I havent had a big gig in a long time and yeah, I think I had worked the least out of everyone at the time of casting. And its such a long, great cast. That was a huge deal for me, but also the fans who stuck with the show and me. Basically everywhere I go, I get shown support; while I also dont daydream about signing autographs and stuf its still nice. The good will towards me is unlike anything I have ever experienced in my career before. It has to be a great feeling. Yeah, its beautiful. So I just want to thank everyone for getting behind the show and supporting it, us and me. Hey, as for autographs there are a bunch of people in my hometown who are more than interested in those, so I dont think thats going to be a problem in the fu- ture. Cest aussi le plus rcompens, avec 40 On August 25th, like every year, televisions biggest stars gathered in Los Angeles for the Emmy Awards. And even though a lot of people will tell you the winners list isnt really representative of the best of television in the past 12 months, it will give you a good idea of the prestige and the acclaim Hollywood grants to a program or a network (HBOs important number of nominations is a great example). Among the most nominated shows this year, Game Of Thrones, Fargo, American Horror Story, Breaking Bad or The Normal Heart. But in sixth place co- mes a show that wasnt part of the online conversation before or during the ceremony: Saturday Night Live, even though, with 14 nods, it was more present than House of Cards, Orange is The New Black, Modern Family or True Detective. Why so much discretion? Maybe because it has become so common to see NBCs sketch show adding a dozen of nominations to its tally every year. With 156 nods, its the most nominated program in the history of the Emmys. It is also the program with the most awards, with 40 over 39 seasons. An exceptional longevity, all the more since the same man has been in charge since the inception of LORNE MICHAELS AND THE SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE EMPIRE 31 Amy Poehler et Seth Meyers / Emmy Awards 2014 statuettes au cours de ses 39 saisons. Les grands rendez-vous dun pisode type de SNL sont le sketch douverture, avant mme le gnrique, the show, except for 5 years in the early 80s: Lorne Mi- chaels, the Canadian who is at the origin of this Ameri- can cultural institution, a factory of TV and movie stars, now has an ubiquitous influence. American comedy pro- bably wouldnt have looked the same without Saturday Night Live. What makes SNL the cultural institution it is today is the fact it follows the same formula since the first live show in 1975, with a frequency of about twenty episodes per season, broadcast live on Saturdays between 11:30pm and 1am. A dozen of comedy skits performed by the cast (with its repertory players -the stars of the show-, and its featured players who are in the supporting roles-) joined each week by a guest host who is either an actor, a comedian, a musician, an athlete, or even a politician (besides taking part in almost every skit, the host also welcomes the viewers with an opening monologue right afer the credits, introduces the musical guest, and of course says good night at the end of the show). Petit passage en revue. sketch covering current events-, the opening monologue (afer the credits), the first performance by the musical guest at the middle of the show, followed by Weekend Update a newscast parody where the anchor, or the anchors, make fun of the weeks headlines with brilliant one-liners. Then, towards the end of the show comes the second musical performance, before the very last skits. The show ends with guest host surrounded by the whole cast on stage, thanking the team and waving goodbye to the viewers. SNL has been the launching pad for a lot of movie stars during the past four decades, among them Jim Carrey, Eddie Murphy, Robert Dow- ney Jr., Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi (whose classic movie The Blues Brothers is an adaptation of a sketch from the show), Mike Myers and more recently Adam San- dler or Will Ferrell; but it is on television that the shows impact is maybe the most im- portant. There is of course both late-night talk shows on NBC, which are produced today by Lorne Michaels, both starring an SNL alum (Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show and Seth Meyers on Late Night), but theres also a lot of other television stars who started on Saturday Night Live. Heres a quick review. CEST LA TLVISION QUE LIMPACT DE LMISSION EST PEUT-TRE LE PLUS IMPORTANT IT IS ON TELEVISION THAT THE SHOWS IMPACT IS MAYBE THE MOST IMPORTANT LORNE MICHAELS AND THE SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE EMPIRE 33 Rachel Welch, Chevy Chase et Lorne Michael pendant le sketch Weekend Update en 1976 Devenue star de la tlvision grce son rle dElaine pendant 9 saisons dans Seinfeld, Julia Louis-Dreyfus a dbut sa carrire de comdienne dans SNL. She became a TV star playing the role of Elaine for 9 years in Seinfeld, but Julia Louis-Dreyfus started her acting career on SNL. Joining the show at only 21, she was the youngest cast member in the shows history back then. There, she shared the stage with the star of the show, Eddie Murphy, as well as Jim Belushi, Billy Crystal, Mar- tin Short and, more importantly, met Larry David, who was a writer on the show and later co-created with Jerry Seinfeld, the iconic sitcom named afer the latter. Since 2012, shes back to political satire, a genre which is part of SNLs DNA, playing the role of a vice-president who blunders and is surrounded by an incompetent and cynical staf on HBOs Veep, a part that got her the Emmy for Best Actress in a Comedy Series three years in a row. JULIA LOUIS-DREYFUS LORNE MICHAELS AND THE SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE EMPIRE 34 LORNE MICHAELS AND THE SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE EMPIRE Comme de nombreuses stars dans lhistoire du show, Will Ferrell a intgr le cast un moment o Lorne Mi- chaels a voulu rinventer SNL. WILL FERRELL Like many stars in the history of the show, Will Ferrell joined the cast at a moment when Lorne Michaels wanted to reinvent SNL. He would become its most emblematic face during the second part of the 90s, thanks to impres- sions like his George W Buh and cult recurring sketches, like The Roxbury Guys with Chris Kattan (of which the incarnation along with Jim Carrey is probably the most famous moment in the history of the show). Even though Will Ferrell will mainly focus his career on movies af- ter SNL, he will also leave his mark online and on television. In 2007, he created Funny or Die with Adam McKay, former SNL head writer, a web- site who came to fame for its parodies and other comedic videos. With the same company, he produced The Spoils of Babylon, a miniseries paro- dying the great event series of the 70s and 80s. In a crazy and overplayed style, this 6x30-minute long sketch re- lates the lives of the rich Mo- rehouse family through the 20th century. It stars Kristen Wiig, another former SNL star who earned an Emmy nomi- nation for that role, along with other big names such as Tobey Maguire, Jessica Alba, Tim Robbins or Michael Sheen. TINA FEY She arrived at SNL as a writer in 1997 and replaced Adam McKay as head writer in 1999, then becoming the first woman in that position. In 2000 she started to appear on screen. She becomes an anchor for Weekend Update, the fake newscast airing at the middle of the show, along with Jimmy Fallon. Even though she lef the show in 2006, its her impression of Sarah Palin during 4 shows in fall 2008 that will remain her most emblematic SNL moments. 17 million viewers saw the episode that aired on October 18th, featuring a cameo of the actual Sarah Palin; it was the most viewed episode since 1994. Tina Fey lef SNL in the spring of 2006 because NBC had ordered her sitcom 30 Rock for the following fall, pro- duced by Lorne Michaels himself, where she plays Liz Lemon, the head writer of a sketch show, obviously ins- pired by her own experience. Alec Baldwin (a SNL regular himself) plays Jack Donaghy, the boss of NBC and Lizs mentor (a character inspired by Lorne Michaels). The show also stars Tracy Morgan (another former SNL cast member) and Jane Krakowski. On 30 Rock, Tina Fey uses the same formula that made Saturday Night Lives suc- cess, with a satirical humour filled with pop culture refe- rences as well as brilliant political commentary thanks to the dynamic between Jack Donaghy, a republican, and Liz Lemon, who is a liberal. The show will also welcome well-known guest stars who arent afraid to be made fun of. During its 7 seasons, the show garnered 57 Emmy no- minations and won 11. 36 LORNE MICHAELS AND THE SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE EMPIRE Arrive SNL en 2001, Amy Poehler sest elle aussi distin- gue notamment par ses imitations, dont Hillary Clinton. AMY POEHLER When she arrived at SNL in 2001, Amy Poehler also came to fame for her impressions such as Hillary Clinton. In 2004, she replaces Jimmy Fallon at the Weekend Update desk, and becomes one half of a comedic duo that is still loved today with Tina Fey (we can now watch them host the Golden Globes). She will also leave the show to star in a new NBC sitcom, Parks and Recreation, launched in 2009, in which she plays passionate government em- ployee Leslie Knope, one of the most emblematic women currently on television. In Parks, satire is also present, but this time rather than dealing with places of power like Washington in Veep or New York in 30 Rock, the show focuses on the politics of a small midwest town and the life of its zany inhabitants that make the show a sort of live-action version of The Simpsons. The comparison isnt so silly when you learn that one of the co-creators of the show, Greg Daniels, is a former writer of the cult animated comedy, which he joined in 1990, afer three years on the writing team ofSaturday Night Live. Before creating Parks and Recreation, he was the man behind the American version of The Ofice. The other half of the Parks duo, Mike Schur, also spent time at SNL (where he rubbed shoulders with Amy Poehler, since he lef the show in 2004), before joining The Ofice. Its not surpri- sing then to see several SNL cast members showing up on the show, such as Andy Samberg or Fred Armisen. 37 LORNE MICHAELS AND THE SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE EMPIRE Being a former SNL star and star in a Lorne Michaels pro- duction isnt always enough for success. Afer being a fixture in the cast between 2000 and 2007, Maya Rudol- ph lef the show and started to focus on a movie career (most notably in Bridesmaids, film co-written by Kristen Wiig, in which she also played the main part). In 2011, she tried to make her TV comeback in Up All Night, a Lorne Michaels production broadcast on NBC, where she plays a talk show host, who is the boss of one of the two main characters. Even though her performance was praised, the show never found its audience and got cancelled af- ter its second season. Because shes a great singer and entertainer, she got the opportunity to be the star of her own variety show, a mix of comedy skits and songs, The Maya Rudolph Show, also on NBC, and also produced by Lorne Michaels. A pilot episode was ordered and broad- cast last May. MAYA RUDOLPH 38 LORNE MICHAELS AND THE SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE EMPIRE En 2012, Andy Samberg quitte SNL aprs 7 ans passs au sein de lquipe. In 2012, Andy Samberg lef SNL afer 7 years in the cast. During his time on the show, he was known in part for the Digital Shorts he created with his comedy group The Lo- nely Island, a series of pre-recorded skits, ofen musical, with racy and immature humour, in which guest hosts ofen took part (the most famous example being Dick in a Box with Justin Timberlake). A year afer his depar- ture, he made his TV return, not on NBC but on FOX, in a comedy produced by NBCUniversal, and created by Mike Schur and Dan Goor (another former Parks and Recrea- tion writer): Brooklyn Nine-Nine. In this show, the two creators applied the workplace comedy formula of Parks and The Ofice to a police precint. The series is a critical success and the show will win two Golden Globes in its first season. Fred Armisen is one of the rare SNL cast members to star in another TV show, while still being on SNL. Indeed, while he lef the shows in 2013 afer 11 seasons, he was already, since 2011, one of the two leads and the co-crea- tor, along with Carrie Brownstein, of Portlandia, a very lef-field sketch show broadcast on cable network IFC, and produced by Lorne Michaels. The one SNL alumn who tried this season to take the sitcom road is for once not a former cast member but a former writer. Since October 5th, John Mulaney stars in his own creation, a sitcom named afer himself in which he will play as a writer working for a talk show which star is played by another former SNL cast member, Mar- tin Short. Nasim Pedrad, yet another SNL alumni, is also on the casting. A show obviously produced by Lorne Mi- chaels. Although it aired afer the popular Family Guy, Mulaney only managed to get 2.3 million viewers (thats a 1.0 rating in the 18/49 demographic), the least-watched comedy series premiere ever on one of the four main networks. Cette situation gogra- The first of these laws is the media chronology. Indeed, the French legislation demands a period of 36 months before you can make a film available on VOD. The user finds it hard to accept since he is looking for instan- taneousness instantaneousness being one of the main selling point of Netflix in the US. Then, the French financial support system to French ci- nema implies that distributors, whose headquarters are in France, must take part to financing French and European movies. The French Broadcasting Authority is very insistent on this point and demands that a quota of French and European movies be broadcasted. But Netflix does not seem to be accepting these conditions. First, their headquarters, which used to be in Luxemburg, are now in Amsterdam and allows them to avoid the manda- tory financing of French and European movies. Moreover, the quota of French movies that the French Broadcasting Authority agreed on will not be observed. Indeed, Netflixs success is not only due to its huge ca- talog, but even more to its algorithm, allowing to target what the user wants. Listening and understanding the users needs is the main factor of success, it is then nor- mal that they wish to bring it to France, so it seems com- FITTING IN THE FRENCH AUDIOVISUAL MEDIA WONT BE SO EASY Sortie en salle In theaters DVD VD lacte DVD VOD on act TV Payante (1 re difusion) Pay Television (1 st broadcasting) TV Payante (2 me difusion) TV en clair et autres 4 Pay Television (2 nd broadcasting) Unscrambled TV and others 4 TV Payante et autres 5 Pay Television and others 5 VD par abonnement Subscription VOD VD gratuite Free VOD + 4 mois + 4 months 1 + 12 mois ou + 14 mois + 12 months or + 14 months 2 + 22 mois ou + 24 mois + 22 months or + 24 months 3 + 30 mois + 30 months + 36 mois + 36 months + 48 mois + 48 months 1 Possible exemption granted by the CNC at + 3 months for movies that had less than 200 viewings in the fourth week in theaters 2 + 12 months in case of no agreement with professional cinema organizations 3 + 24 months in case of no agreement with professional cinema organizations 4 Paying services that use 3.2% of their turnover for co-productions 5 Paying services that use less than 3.2% of their turnover for co-productions 1 Drogation possible accorde par le ndt du CNC + 3 mois pour les films ayant fait moins de 200 entres au cours de la 4me semaine. THE FRENCH RESPONSE Since the Californian group does not want to comply with these rules, that are the core of the French exception, the French government stepped into the breach by the end of July. Aurlie Filippeti announced a reorganization of the Media Chronology during an interview for Le Figaro. By reducing the period between the release in theaters and its availability on VOD, the French government aims at developing the French VOD market, that is not working very well for the last months. This will only be available for services taking part to the financing and broadcas- ting of French and European movies. This defense aims at highlighting made in France productions but only seems to be flailing at the air. Indeed, we know that 70% of broadcasted programs on the American platform are series. Yet, series are not afected by media chronology, so this reform doesnt seem very bothering for the Ame- rican firm. Un choix sur On the contrary, this anti-netflix even allows the lat- ter to become a reference in the SVOD sector, by ofering it a first-class exposure for the brand. This reorganiza- tion has done good for other actors in the VOD market: French competition could prepare for the arrival of Net- flix in France. First, Canal Plus already introduced its VOD service, Canal Play, with a slogan that cannot be clearer: Thousands of films, series and cartoons everywhere, right now and wi- thout restriction, prices from 7.99 a month for viewings on compu- ters, tablets and smartphones, to 9.99 a month for direct access on TV and an advertising campaign called Being a vampire, where John Malkovich sings the praises of the service, since August 2014. Everything sounds good for Canal Plus, especially on its broadcas- ting. They have a significant ad- vantage on Netflix, since two In- ternet Service Providers have been slow taking a position. Stphane Richard, Orange CEO, announced they wont ofer Netflix in their pac- kage. It was not only due to Netflixs position regarding the French legislation, but it also see- med to be a problem of money. While Canal Plus ofers a generous amount of money for ISP to be included in their package, Reed Hastings seems to be less generous. However, in view of the success of the platforms launch on September 15, Bouygues Telecom announced it will ofer the SVOD service in his package in November. A choice that Orange decided to follow. Only SFR and Free havent yet made a decision, but there is no doubt about the imminent arrival of Netflix on these two ISP who may wish to put themselves on the level of their competitors. FITTING IN THE FRENCH AUDIOVISUAL MEDIA WONT BE SO EASY 46 lequel sest alors calqu Orange. Another rival came at Arnaud Montebourgs request: OrangeCast. It is a key developed by Orange that you can plug at your TV which gives you access to the OCS (Orange Cinema Series) channel, several other national and international channels, but also videogames and Deezer. We will also have to count on the box of Video Futur, which will try to find its place thanks to a package that grants access to a library of films and series, to the main chan- nels and to replay services. Numericable also launched a service dedicated to series named, for now, Series-Flix. The French VOD market seems ready to welcome the American rival. Its advantage is not its ofer, but rather its database of clients and reputation. Netflix will have to work harder on its advertising strategy to face Canal Plus and its 30 years of experience. This advertising campaign will also aim at generalizing VOD, which is still not a na- tural reaction in French minds. NETFLIX: A CULTURAL REVOLUTION? The arrival of Netflix will certainely trigger an evolution in the habits of French consumers of cultural products. But we will have to wait some time before we can talk about a Netflix revolution. First, the media chronology will require a library of more than 3 year old movies. Netflix will then lose its advan- tage on direct selling, but also on illegal downloads, thanks to which one can get a movie as soon as it is re- leased in theaters (in variable quality). Cette srie intitule sobrement Marseille est dcrite comme House of Cards made in France. Moreover, since only two ISP entered into a contract with Netflix, it wont be available for everybody on a TV screen. With an access on computers and an application on tablets and smartphones, Netflix starts with a certain disadvantage on its rivals. In addition, French habits are a lot diferent from the ones in the United States, where TV is very expensive and people tend to have several packages to have a complete library. This revolutionary service was the perfect solu- tion thanks to its price and its large choice of programs. In France with more than 25 free channels and the seve- ral replay services, the public needs are simply not the same, and Netflix will have to adapt. Apart from the movies and the material, Netflix is even more longed-for for the series, especially because of its large catalog. Will it live up to French users expecta- tions? Indeed, even if we criticize them, French series are very successful among the general public. If Josphine Ange Gardien , Camping Paradis or Plus Belle La Vie are not in the library, it would mean a decrease in the number of subscribers, and then it would restrict the service to a particular part of clients. In order not to push those clients, Netflix decided to create a new original series, a French one this time. So- berly entitled Marseille, this series is described as the House of Cards made in France. The Netflix series were very successful among the general public and the critics, and this new one will have to hit hard to keep up, but also to overco- me the absence of Netflixs biggest success. Indeed, by the end of August, it was oficial: Netflix isnt allowed to broadcast House of Cards, since the rights were sold to Canal Plus by Media Rights Capital (MRC) before Netflix thought about coming to France. Quite a hard blow for the numerous fans who will not enjoy a broadcasting si- milar to the one in the United States. In addition to the series production, Netflix wants to change things about viewings. Thanks to the interface first, Netfix ofers everything a series-lover could dream of: all series in the original language, customization of subtitles, keeping the progress in the viewing of the se- ries, skipping the end credits Moreover, the new trend in the United States is to watch several episodes at a time: the binge-watching. Adepts are so numerous that Netflix decided to ofer all episodes of a season on the same day for its ori- ginal series, in order to fulfill the needs of the many fans of Frank Underwood (House Of Cards) or PornStache (Orange is the New Black). In France, national channels got us used to that kind of viewing with great success. When American people must wait seven days between each episode, we usually have two or three episodes on the same night. Lately, M6 even broadcasted 4 episodes of Scandal each Tuesday. The French audience seems to be predisposed to this trend. Other advantage, Netflix allows his subscribers to watch the episodes in order, whereas other channels have to comply with the CSA age restrictions. This a significant advantage in order to follow the series and the charac- ters evolution. SVOD also allows the subscribers to watch the episodes at their own pace, without having to comply with the random broadcasting of national channels, so subscri- bers will be able to watch the whole series as they want. Lately, TF1 did not broadcast the two last episodes of Person Of Interest, and broadcasted them much later wit- hout any warning. The same happened to Ugly Betty, the final season of which was never broadcasted at all. One thing for sure, SVOD will disrupt French broadcas- ting from 2014 on, and Netflix is one of the main actors of it. Thanks to the attractive price, and free month trial, more than 100,000 French have subscribed in the first 15 days. But for many it was a big disapointment, because of the small catalog available. However, the group pro- mises 50% more content within a year. But these signi- ficant changes, arriving sparingly, are they really an ar- gument for customer loyalty ? Now the question is how many people on these 100,000 subscribers will remain once the free month trial will expired? At the end of the year, 36 of them were cancelled afer one season, for our own enjoyment or misfortune. Why so many losses? Are the studios, pro- ducers, distributors or viewers to blame? Whether you are seriously addicted to television series or that you have only a few flagship shows to watch each week, you have probably railed against a network afer a cancelation. A cancelation is always painful, be it afer one, two or eight seasons. But it is clear that in recent years, more and more series do not exceed first season. The result? Some viewers are discouraged before the premiere of new shows and prefer to wait until a poten- tial renewal to embark on the adventure.
CANCELATIONS HARD TO UNDERSTAND See a show to end too soon is even more frustrating when you feel it received a huge support from fans. Except the networks are not looking to please us but to generate profits, primarily through advertising, hence the impor- tance of ratings. But again, do not believe a show is saved because it has reasonable ratings: in fact, the networks are particularly interested in the 18-49s, which will po- tentially be afected by the commercials aired. The more that audience will be high, the more the ad inserts will be expensive. In addition to this criterion, producers and television channels are interested in the digital presence of a show. For example, this is where Twitter comes into play. That explains the multiplication of accounts de- voted to series, and why stars are advertising them and live-tweet during some episodes. La pro- grammation dun show dans une certaine case horaire peut parfois signer son arrt de mort, ou au contraire Unfortunately, ratings do not always save a show, and there are other causes of cancela- tion, as the cost of production! Steven Spielbergs Terra Nova has had a bitter experience: with a 20 million dollars pilot, it was not profitable enough! Sometimes, a series is simply cancelled because there was a choice to make between a show produced internally by the network and a show pro- duced by an external com- pany.
Obviously, this is not an exact science and there are some exceptions, such as Glee, which should have been can- celled due to its low ratings, but which has been renewed for two seasons thanks to strong sells of CDs and by-products. The show was no longer profitable through advertising, but won a break with external profits! HAD VIEWERS BECOME TOO DEMANDING? As we have seen, low ratings ofen cause cancellations in series. So should we blame the viewer? It might seem logical: if a show has not enough viewers, it deserves to give way to a new one. But once again, it is not that simple. Networks schedules are subjects to a lot of discussions in the Fall, and for good reason. Programming a show in a certain time slot can, sometimes, signed its death war- rant or, on the contrary, enable its success. Thus, to boost a new show, networks sometimes try to schedule it afer 54 TV SERIES, DISPOSABLE CONSUMER PRODUCTS? In return, shows less fortunate when it co- mes to ratings are stuck between two popular ones and can hope to pick up their viewers. But there is also the Friday Night Death Slot, which can be fatal for most of the shows. A television series scheduled in this slot (and worse, in late evening) is unlikely to survive unless it is a 10 seasons cult show Poor programming of a new show can be a first answer to explain its cancellation. But there are only 7 days in a week, 24 hours in a day , and we must program the exis- ting hundreds of television series. And thats the problem: the abundance of series. We must compare the nu- mbers (and believe me, I have spent times coun- ting new shows per sea- son and per network on Wikipedia): for five years, orders do not cease to in- crease. Channels are looking for the perfect show formu- la and are multiplying trials, introducing new concepts, new synopsis, and new casts. It is impossible to watch everything, unless to spend our life watching television, even then. 55 TV SERIES, DISPOSABLE CONSUMER PRODUCTS? 0 12 24 36 48 60 2008-2009 2009-2010 2010-2011 2011-2012 2012-2013 2013-2014 34 33 36 42 44 58 Nombre de sries commandes SRIES-1 Description 2008-2009 2009-2010 2010-2011 2011-2012 2012-2013 2013-2014 Nombre de sries commandes 34 33 36 42 44 58 LES CHANES CHERCHENT LA FORMULE DU SHOW PARFAIT ET MULTIPLIENT LES ESSAIS CHANNELS ARE LOOKING FOR THE PERFECT SHOW FORMULA AND ARE MULTIPLYING TRIALS Source : Wikipedia sattachent quaux nouveauts quen cas de gros coup de cur car suite aux difusions vient le moment dli- miner les vilains petits canards. Tired, viewers will tend to keep watching safe bets and will not become attached to a new show unless of a heart-stopper. Afer the airings comes the time to re- move the ugly ducklings. This is mathematical: chan- nels regularly cancel between 50% and 70% of their new shows, and as orders increase, they cancel more and more shows. TO THE RESCUE OF TELEVISION SERIES GONE TOO SOON That said, the media landscape is constantly evolving and adapting itself to the influx of new shows. Thus, producers are taking interest in mini-series and one- shots , those series that have only one season with a planned ending, or in anthology series (with a diferent story per episode or season) as American Horror Story, Black Mirror, True Detective, Fargo One way to avoid that the viewer gets bored and lowering ratings. 56 TV SERIES, DISPOSABLE CONSUMER PRODUCTS? The arrival of new broadcasters like Netflix, Yahoo! or Amazon also changed that. So far, canceled series had only one hope: to be saved and bought by another chan- nel. Today, Internet comes to the rescue. In 2009, You- Tube broadcasts the remaining filmed episodes of The Beautiful Life afer it was canceled afer 2 episodes aired. In 2013, Netflix resurrects Arrested Development, yet can- celed by FOX in 2006. Lately, Yahoo! announced the re- covery of Community for a sixth season Behind these rescues, mainly appreciated by fans, there is an econo- mic advantage: sales flyers for YouTube, Amazon and co., and a possible increase of subscribers for Netflix! But if it helps some good shows. By trying to please the greatest number and to target profitability at all costs, the major broadcast networks end up betting on quantity rather than quality A hardly winning strategy because of the dificulty to highlight so many television series! Hopefully, with the appearance of these newcomers in the audiovisual sector, we ma- nage to eradicate the tendency to see television series as products (too) easily disposable In the meantime, arm yourself with patience if you plan to test about sixty new television series of the 2014-2015 season !
