In Florida, floods hit Jacksonville as Irma moves into Georgia

MARCO ISLAND, Fla. - Dealing a parting blow to Florida on Monday, Irma, once a hurricane but now a tropical storm, unleashed Jacksonville's worst floods in 100 years, inundated parts of coastal Georgia and spawned heavy storm surges in Charleston, S.C.

A day after Irma blew through virtually the entire state, Florida confronted a debris-pocked panorama stretching from coast to coast, with rescue efforts still in progress and a massive cleanup only beginning to gather force.

The direct death toll, mercifully, was not commensurate with Irma's wrath. Authorities in Georgia on Monday reported a storm-related death, without providing details, and one person was electrocuted in central Florida - a grim hazard in flooding's aftermath.
