In 2014, with the release of iOS 8, Apple announced HomeKit, a new software framework that allowed developers to connect smart home technology to users’ smartphones. Users could design their rooms and integrate smart-home appliances as and when they wanted them and then enable automatic actions using Siri and through taps within apps.
