Sometimes garden lighting is a bit of an afterthought. A lot of care goes into choosing the paving, plants and pots but how much attention is paid to what should be illuminated and what type of fittings are used — let alone important issues such as where will the wiring go and how many power sources will be needed.
Thinking about how you will light your garden during the design stage makes all the difference to how it will look — and feel — at night. Integrating lighting into your original garden design plan means the end result will look intentional rather than like a late addition. Moreover, it can save you money and hassle in the long run.
“Lighting is a major factor in any garden and is what brings it to life in the evening,” says Steve Warner, director of Outhouse Design. “Lighting can change the mood and feeling of a space, it can highlight an artwork, increase a garden’s sense of intimacy or create the illusion of more space.
