Parenting Goals “Raising a family isn’t easy, but that’s what drives Joanna and me to try and be really great at it,” says Chip (at the Karem Shrine Building in Waco, Texas, which he and Joanna are renovating).

“Helicopter parent” isn’t exactly a term people would use to describe Chip Gaines. “I’m more of the ‘Learn how to ride a bike by falling off a few times’ kind of dad,” he says. “I’m not the guy that’s going to cover my kids in Bubble Wrap and two jackets to go outside if it’s raining.” Still, when it comes to raising his and wife Joanna’s five children—Drake, 14, Ella, 12, Duke, 10, Emmie, 9, and Crew, 11 months—the Fixer Upper star, 44, is a big softie. “When they fall down and scrape a knee and look back at me with little puppy dog eyes...I get to scoop them up, give them a kiss, wash off their knee and comfort them until they’re ready to try again,” he says.
