The Goal Is To Feel Strong, Says 'Black Panther' Jewelry Designer

Douriean Fletcher made the powerful adornments worn in the 2018 film Black Panther. She's happy to see people "taking chances" with their jewelry — breaking away from the "dainty pair of hoops."
Douriean Fletcher made everything from earrings to armor for the 2018 film Black Panther. Fletcher spent time studying in South Africa, and learned that, for some, "what you wear is telling somebody who you are — whether it's the region you're from, the status you have within your family, or in your community. ... I wanted to make sure that I had applied that to my own work."

Douriean Fletcher is Marvel Comics' first licensed jewelry maker. She's behind the powerful adornments worn by the women of Wakanda in Black Panther, which helped pull audiences into an imagined world where power and societal roles are based on expertise and ability. On Sunday, she's giving a talk at the National Museum of about the aesthetics of gender equity in Wakandan society.
