Shapes & Shades

Cheryl Filby's favourite appliqué technique is fusing the shapes with double-sided fusible web and then machine or hand stitching the shapes in place. Almost all of this quilt has been made with this technique, except for the borders, which are mostly pieced.

Made with only tones of Madder and Indian red and a cream background, this quilt would be a great stash buster for that pile of reds!

Finished quilt size: 188cm (74in) square

Materials

• 3.7m (4yd) cream micro-dot print fabric (block backgrounds and Borders 1-4)
• 1.3m (1½yd) cream stripe print fabric (Border 4)
• 25cm (¼yd) each of 24 assorted Indian red and madder print fabrics
• 60cm (¾yd) pale red stripe print fabric (binding)
• 4.2m (4⅝yd) backing fabric
• Batting at least 210cm (82in) square
• Fusible web
• Stranded embroidery floss to match the red print fabrics
• Rotary cutter, ruler and mat
• Sewing machine with ¼in foot
• General sewing supplies

Cutting

From the cream micro-dot print fabric, cut:

• 13 strips, 8½in x width of fabric. Cross cut them to yield 49 squares, 8½in (Blocks 1 and 2). From the remainder of the last strip, cut four• two strips, 2in x width of fabric. Cross cut them to yield another 39 squares, 2in (Border 2)• six strips, 1⅝in x width of fabric (Border 1)• seven strips, 2.in x width of fabric (Border 3)
