As long as you can find enough level space to park a dozen 40ft containers, you can host a race of the RC44 class. That’s because these all-carbon rockets are designed to knock down for transport in a single container, with the sugar-scoop stern unbolting and the mast breaking into two sections.

Not that space is in short supply for the opening event of the 2019 race season, at the newly developed Porto Montenegro, tucked into a deep bay between 1000m-high mountains. Built on the site of a former naval shipyard, this deep-water venue came ready made with quays, storage hangars and even a vast, rusty crane which has been repainted as the marina’s mascot. With architecture resembling that of Venice a few hundred miles up the coast, Porto Montenegro makes an attractive and comfortable base for this owner-driver class.
