On the tiny island of Puerto Rico, there lies a huge fan base for the older Volkswagens. And it is there we find a very unique, 1954 Beetle that has turned the VW racing industry on its head with performance that is unmatched anywhere else. During the past 12 months, Teddy Figueroa’s Volkron – a team of dedicated mechanics, tuners, driver and supporters – have taken this Bug from a rather unusual combination of mounting an air-cooled VW engine in the front, backed by non-VW transmission and Ford 9-inch rear end, to the record-breaking performance of 7.18-seconds at 188mph in the quarter-mile. At the time of writing this, no one has ever gone quicker than 7.28 in a full bodied VW… up to now. Their goal is to break the 6-second barrier, perhaps this year.
