Irving Berlin publishes Alexander’s Ragtime Band. The piece is a huge hit in the US and UK, but is scorned by some ragtime purists. The following year, the show Hullo, Ragtime! premieres. Ragtime becomes a powerful musical force, a key genre in the development of jazz.
