IN THE LATE 1800’S THE FISHING INDUSTRY in southwest Florida changed forever. Long before the modern crowds transformed Boca Grande into the mess it is today, the discovery of an incredible tarpon migration to the deep holes of the pass coincided with a sporting tackle revolution. But it was Sanibel Island that recorded the first tarpon on rod and reel. The fabled fish still show up every spring and there is perhaps no saltwater species that garners more widespread respect and admiration.

The beaches of Lee County are known for their abundant seashells. Many tourists also flock to southwest Florida to catch a glimpse of the elusive Sanibel Island sunset. However, anglers from around the world make ritualistic pilgrimages chasing a different sort of green flash as the curving coastline is in perfect alignment with the silver king’s massive migration route.
