THE LADY SENSEI IS TAKING HER MESSAGE TO THE MASSES

Most people who get into the martial arts for self-defense reasons do so out of some vague concern that one day they might be the victim of a random crime and therefore should probably have a method of protecting themselves. But for some, the need to learn self-defense is a much more pressing matter, one that can require a whole different mindset on the part of both the student and the instructor.

“For women — or men — who’ve experienced some kind of trauma or violation, there’s a difference in training because they’ve already had that experience and they don’t want to experience it again,” Gerry Chisolm said. “They remember the feeling of powerlessness. Trauma gives us a different mindset.”
