Gallstones (cholelithiasis) are surprisingly common, affecting one in 10 people, and may not give any symptoms, remaining unknown throughout life. They are more common if overweight, female (especially those who have had children) and over 40. They are also more common in people with Crohn’s disease or anyone with a problem with bile flow.
