In the pre-war years, Laurent Giles was already drawing successful ocean racers and cruisers. In 1936, John Illingworth dreamed up a concept for a new style of ocean racer and Giles turned the dream into reality, designing the 48ft (14.6m) Maid of Malham. She picked up pots galore before the war and introduced a new look to yachting – a look that was to later develop into the revolutionary Myth of Malham.
