THE Mediterranean Sea is connected to the Atlantic Ocean and separates the three continents of Europe, Asia and Africa. If you look at a map you’ll see how the Mediterranean Sea is virtually surrounded by land, making it an inland sea. This is also the meaning of the sea’s name – from the Latin words medius (“middle”) and terra (“land”). This inland body of water creates a distinctive climate for the land surrounding it. It’s known as the Mediterranean climate, in which summers are hot and dry, while winter is the rainy season.
