Pasture management to boost organic matter

Pasture is one of the best things that can happen to a soil. The fibrous roots of grass are ideal for creating crumbly topsoil rich in organic matter. But not all pastures are created equal.

THE POWER OF PASTURE ROOTS

The roots of all crop plants can help contribute to the building up of organic matter in the soil. But it is hard to beat the fibrous roots of grasses for the sheer bulk of biomass. Most crops are top heavy whereas for grasses, roots generally make up half or more of the biomass.
