AS a wild-eyed Marc Bolan worked hard to get her drunk at his Bayswater pad in 1973, BBC radio DJ Annie Nightingale kept the tape rolling, the resulting interview a typically scattershot mix of stardust and psychobabble. “We’re all egomaniacs, that’s the truth of it,” the one-inch rocker concluded as he reflected on his view from the top of the pop pyramid. “And we’re all very nice, really. We’re basically for the chicks.”

Nightingale’s new memoir plots a similarly non-linear course through the 80-year-old’s career, thepop correspondent having fronted and the Radio 1 requests show before her rebirth as an Ibiza party animal in the 1990s, by which time her travel kit comprised “a large bottle of vodka and a giant bar of chocolate”.
