Sensational SQUASH
At this time of year, squash are just starting to put on a show in the Kitchen Garden at RHS Garden Harlow Carr. Squash belong to the Cucurbitaceae family, the same family that includes cucumbers and courgettes. They’re heat-loving plants native to the Americas, but surprisingly, are very easy to grow in the UK, as long as you select a suitable variety. There are many varieties to choose from, ranging from the relatively small ‘acorn’ squash, to giant pumpkins, growing as a bush, semi-bushes, semi-trailing or trailing! Colours range from grey to greens to orange, and in some wonderful shapes.
