It’s based on a story by the writer Karen Russell, which summed up everything I was trying to communicate. There’s something magically surreal about her stories that translates so well to the operaWe’re best friends and we live close to one another in Brooklyn, so are constantly in dialogue. In a production where there are so many voices, it’s really helpful to have a constant. The collaborative aspect is one of the major things that drew me to opera.
