LAND REFORM WILL UNLOCK ECONOMIC POTENTIAL

Land spells life. It is necessary for existence. It is the original source of all material wealth, the economic prosperity closely linked with the richness of natural resources. The possession of land connotes security and a better life; a permanent possession that can be passed on for generations.

A robust land reform programme is urgently needed to address the legacy of the past through land redistribution, land tenure and restitution, and other transformative rural development programmes.

HISTORY OF LAND DISPOSSESSION

It has been more than 107 years since colonialists introduced the Natives Land Act, the cornerstone of so-called legal land dispossession, restricting Africans to buying, leasing and selling land only in specific areas, which were referred to as reserves.
