Developed by US pediatrician Sidney Haas in 1951 and later popularized by (The Kirkton Press, 1994), the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD), intended for people with Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and other inflammatory bowel disorders, is based on the concept that complex, difficult-to-digest carbohydrates feed harmful bacteria in the gut, causing them to overgrow and trigger inflammation. The diet is said to work by “starving out these bacteria” and restoring the balance of bacteria in the gut ().
