Reviews for Heaven for Kids

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Even though this book is written for kids, I as an adult found it very interesting and appreciated the simple, yet biblical answers this author gives to many questions kid's (and adults) have about heaven. He definitely has a gift of writing to all ages.I enjoyed the first part of the book best and also loved that he incorporated the easy to understand gospel message at the end. I am thinking about giving this as gifts to my grandchildren as they get a little older.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Heaven for Kids is a new book by author Randy Alcorn, who is a simply prolific Christian writer who seems intent on imitating his historical hero and hero in the faith, CS Lewis, when it comes to the sheer variety of genres his books would fall under. This newest book is patterned after his best-selling work, Heaven, but it is decidedly not a standard adaptation. I say this because even though the questions and broad themes and truths discussed are the same as in the regular book for older readers, the content is almost completely rewritten for this “kid's edition”. Alcorn makes a conscious effort to speak in a way kids can understand, and if that means re-writing the book, then he was obviously more than willing to do so. This has lead to both good and bad results. The bad results are that he sometimes uses language and phrases that kids do not use, though he thinks they do. He also puts so many pics of smiling children, it starts to get saccharine sweet after a while, and this can be off-putting for a child of any age, but especially the older ones. I'd say that the book is for mainly children aged thirteen and under, as the language and structure of the book will automatically trigger the snarky, and immature side of many teens who like to snigger and swagger when they see something that is “for little kids”. But the good results are that this is a marvelous book for young children up through thirteen years of age. It can also work for a family devotional, Sunday School lesson, or the like, for children ranging from young to older teens, if done right. With skillful adapting of the words and text, it can be an experience for children from elementary to high school to learn the glories we have to look forward to in Heaven someday. Theologically, this book is just as top-notch, and just as necessary for children as Heaven was for older teens and adults. Teaching these children now, before they develop the negative, and untrue, ideas about Heaven, can prevent much harm that results from the false notions too many adults have had. These kids may be prevented from growing up to view Heaven as a boring place that is only better than Hell, but somehow lesser than this present sinful life. Just think about it if we can teach them rightly about their eternal home (provided they have followed Christ) from a young age. How much more good deeds will children do for the Lord if they know the truth? How much more preaching and telling others of the Gospel? How much holier will they live their lives? It's exciting to think about the difference this could make. Let's teach them the right attitudes as children to combat the Devil's lies about a “boring” Heaven. This book should be a part of every church's Sunday School curriculum for children. The truths it teaches (based on the Scriptures, as all spiritual, moral, and eternal truths must be) are timeless and necessary to combat the lies about Heaven and the New Earth that too many Christians start believing when they are young children. Please use this book. Highly Recommended for children, Sunday Schools, family devotionals, and all other activities involving children and young teenagers.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I think this is a good books for kids I recommend to read this book
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Alcorn's book on Heaven but spoken toward children. Many reviews negatively referenced the amount of speculative material in the original book. If it was off-putting there, it will be no less disagreeable here. I found the speculative material to be food for thought and areas for opening discussions with my children. The book is kid-friendly in language and style. I have a problem with it referencing too many other books to make its point - esp. C. S. Lewis' Narnia Chronicles. Not only do I have to explain difficult text, I have to explain the Narnia stuff, too. Eventually, I just read ahead and paraphrased everything. When my kids are a little older, they can do the Narnia books. This book will go on the kid's shelf so they can get to it easily and look up answers or speculations.
