Об этой аудиокниге

Neil Gaiman takes listeners on a wild and magical trip to the land of giants and gods and back. In a village in ancient Norway lives a boy named Odd, and he's had some very bad luck: His father perished in a Viking expedition; a tree fell on and shattered his leg; the endless freezing winter is making villagers dangerously grumpy.

Out in the forest Odd encounters a bear, a fox, and an eagle-three creatures with a strange story to tell. Now Odd is forced on a journey to save Asgard, city of the gods, from the Frost Giants who have invaded it. It's going to take a very special kind of twelve-year-old boy to outwit the Frost Giants, restore peace to the city of gods, and end the long winter. Someone cheerful and infuriating and clever. . . .

Someone just like Odd. . . .

This book was lovely, and just the right length for the story it was.Drawing on north mythology and heroic folklore, this book tells the story of Odd, an infuriatingly cheerful boy who goes on a quest to end the long winter with three animals who are more then they appear. Reading this book made me very happy.Neil Gaiman is at his best when he writes for children and young adults. His books for a younger audience are consistently great.

Many years ago, so long ago the Vikings roamed the forests and villages, a father died. It wasn't just any old person's father, it was Odd's. The young man had jumped into the foamy waters of the ocean on a sea-raiding trip to save one of the ponies, who got flung overboard. Alas, nobody was saved but the grateful pony.

So Odd's mother married Fat Albert. The drunkard didn't spend much of his time with the poor lad in much of a way, for he had his own children to look after, even if he didn't have clubs and meetings in the background. So Odd strayed.

As a young boy, he had attempted to chop down a tree with his father's axe. The results? A crutch. And most of all, pain. So this meant that the little, limping boy had not much of a chance in the wild. Survival was, as you can see by reading the first few sentences in this paragraph, not Odd's thing.

He camped in his father's old hut, not daring to stroll into the unknown thicket quite yet. Here he found a small lump of wood, which his father had started to carve. But he had never finished it; so Odd tried to finish it for him.

The next day, he was awoken by the sly moan of a fox outside his door. The fox winked at him cheekily and then darted off into the woods. So Odd followed.

But what did he find? What could he do? What did the lump of wood have to do with anything? Read on, find out.

This book was marvellously funny, with few dialogue and not many expectations. But that's how I like books; who wants a book with no surprises, dead seriousness and chitter-chatter on every page? Not me, I can tell you!

Charming. And credit to Adam Stower for the pictures which are an important part of the charm.

I highly recommend the illustrated edition, as Riddell's work adds a lot of depth to Gaiman's story. This is a great tale about a boy with a limp who finds himself facing a giant at Asgard to help out Thor, Loki and Odin. Odd is likable and Gaiman achieves a lot of depth in a short amount of pages. If you're a fan of either Gaiman or Riddell, you should pick this up!

This arrived from Amazon yesterday afternoon. (I tried to find it in local bookshops first, but apparently the print run was smaller than last year's World Book Day titles and they all sold out really fast.) Would have read it in one sitting but I kept getting interrupted by Things To Do. It's a wonderful little story and really really makes me want to get my hands on some Norse myths as I'm not terribly familiar with them beyond Neil Gaiman's interpretations in his various works.Loved it!

This story had lovely pacing, some gentle twists on more traditional quest tropes, lovely language, and dreadful writing. I recognise that it is probably aimed at children just transitioning into reading chapter books, but I've read many of those, and this one was clunky. For those who are visual readers, I suspect it will go completely unnoticed, but as an almost entirely aural reader, the rhythm was off, the phrasing uneven. And I couldn't make it fit any patterns either - it didn't seem that it was just in an odd tempo (I'm comfortable in 7/8 and 11/8 and 5/4 and other tempos that are unpopular in western mainstream music), but that it didn't really have a workable rhythm at all.Other aspects? It was a quick read. The female characters are few and far between, and as far as I can tell none of the named ones are ever in the same geographical area, so it falls down there. Which, given that it has a very narrow perspective - that of a pre-teen/early teen male - is possibly not surprising. And the handling of the main character's disability appears to be done well* - there is healing across the course of the story, but even though Odd goes to Asgard, there is no 'hand of god(dess)' miracle reset to factory settings removal of disability, which it looked strongly like there would be.* I may have missed nuances. I frequently do. However, what I noticed is that I saw neither 'nobly standing tall in the face of adversity/that which does not kill us makes us stronger' or 'pity the poor cripple'.

Neil Gaiman is amazingly versatile, and this short YA novel proves it again. Although it's aimed at young adults, I enjoyed this Norse legend with a modern twist very much. I actually checked out the audiobook version from our electronic library. Mr. Gaiman reads the story himself, and he does a wonderful job at that as well!

A delightful little story of the Viking boy, Odd, and his efforts to help Odin, Thor & Loki overcome a Frost Giant's scheme. A very quick read that left me hungry for more adventures. I hope Gaiman revisits Odd, perhaps even with a YA novel. Recommended to fans of Norse myths and heroic little boys.

Odd is a young Norseman who leaves his village and encounters a fox, an eagle, and a bear in the forest, three animals who are more than they seem and who needs Odd's help in Asgard. This is a really sweet tale that is quite similar to the fairy-tales I read as a kid - talking animals, Norse gods, mean step-parents, and a happy ending. It's not an amazing story, but a nice way to spend a couple of hours. The illustrations are quite nice as well.

A good read, too bad it was so short. I hope to someday see an extended version of this tale, because it felt as if there was still much more to odds adventures.

Odd's name means the tip of a sword, and is a lucky name, though he is not a lucky boy. His leg is crippled, and when his mother remarried after his father died, the man was not interested in having another child after his own seven. Tired of the unpleasant homelife with this man, Odd leaves with some provisions to live in his father's old woodcarving hut. He hopes to last out the winter there and start a new life, but things get more complicated when three gods trapped in animal forms need his help. Joining them, he goes off to help save Asgard and, hopefully, his home as well. Short and sweet, Gaiman's Odd is a very cleanly written book. There aren't a lot of spots with description or exposition, and the only backstory presented is handled quickly. Though set back in the viking days, the dialogue is kept to a contemporary level and the diction level is well-suited to the younger age bracket without being patronizing. It would be a lot of fun to read aloud to a young audience--I suppose my friends need to start having babies so I can read to them, eh? Won't hold my breath, though.

A charming little story about a twelve year old village boy named Odd. His father is dead and his leg is shattered and he has a habit of smiling in a way that infuriates those around him. Odd finds himself on a quest to help the gods Odin, Thor and Loki (who have been transformed into an eagle, bear and fox, respectively) take back their home from one of the Frost Giants.

Neil Gaiman has used figures from Viking Mythology to craft an entertaining story about twelve-year-old Odd. His father died during a raid, he has needed a crutch to walk ever since his foot was crushed beneath a tree and his mother has remarried to a man he dislikes. To make matters worse, spring has not arrived and winter seems to be holding his village to ransom. Odd is so fed up he leaves home early one morning, struggling through the snow to his father’s old cabin in the forest. One day a fox leads him to a bear whose paw is caught fast in a tree whilst an eagle circles above. Odd helps the bear and learns that the three animals are really gods, transformed by the Frost Giant and expelled from Asgard. Odd determines to help them and sets out to confront the Frost Giant. This is a great story which I read aloud to my nine-year-old whilst they were studying Vikings at school. Gaiman uses some quite big words for this age group but this can be good as it will help to extend their vocabulary.

Fun story for parents to listen too with their children. The narration is well done with the voices of the animal characters & Odd easily differentiated from the narrator. The characterization is excellent and you can easily imagine these characters in your mind. In addition, the audio book is approximately one hour long, therefore young children may be encouraged to listen to the entire book as a bedtime story, especially if you have the picture book to accompany the audio. This is a great way to introduce your children to Asgard!

Odd is a crippled young boy who meets three strange animals in the woods. A bear, a fox, and an eagle. It doesn't take him long to realize that they aren't normal animals, but the gods Odin, Loki, and Thor. They've been exiled from Asgard by a warlike frost giant and Odd has to help them recover their kingdom and their normal forms.

This is a fun and lighthearted adventure in Norse Mythology.

Odd and the Frost Giants is a magical, modern fairytale taken from the lore of Norse mythology. As a print book, it would be well suited not only to middle-grade readers but also as a longer story for reading to even younger children. As for the audiobook version, not only is Neil Gaiman a magnificent writer, but he's an exceptional narrator as well. I thoroughly enjoyed this engaging break from reality.
