I like the magic aspect of it, but Roxanne starts to get on my nerves, especially the way she refuses to listen. It is a good story overall, in fact I read the book several years ago and decided to re-read it because I remembered enjoying it then.

Love Nora’s books. Was surprised that all cards were laid on table from the beginning.

I haven’t finished yet but Nora Roberts’ books are always good. I find the narration distracting. She speaks just a bit too quickly. It sounds rushed. If you slow the read to 0.8 then it’s too slow. More distracting though is that she fluctuates from sounding human to digital/manufactured. It’s bizarre.

The story follows a family of carnival wokrers who eventually become successful and settle in New Orleasns.

Luke is just a kid when he runs away from a home where he is regularly beaten by his stepfather. At a traveling carnival he meets Max a master magician who takes him in and raises him with her daughter, bringing him into all the family businesses (not only are they master magicians, they are also thieves.) Max's daughter Roxy grows up with Luke and over time they fall in love. Then their past catches up with them and they are separated for years.

I liked watching Luke and Roxy grow up, but this is another one that I had a hard time getting into. You get to see them from the point of view of so many different characters. I really liked the whole family. It was interesting to see how they related magic and thievery and some of this reminded me of a girly Ocean's 11, 12 and 13. Sometimes I wasn't a big fan of Roxy. I understand that she didn't know there were good explanations for things that Luke did but come on, give a guy a chance.

I enjoyed this story about magicians with interesting and exciting action for awhile then events got repetitive but my real problem was how much power the bad guy had over hero which didn't seem realistic. Roxy's father runs a magic show and takes young pick-pocket Luke into their family.

Honest Illusions by Nora RobertsA teen boy, Luke is out hustling and getting away with picking others pockets for money while they are at the carnival. The magic show interests him and he enters while also continuing to pick pockets. He's called upon to go on stage and be part of the trick. After he is asked to return to the magicians (Max) room. He's been watching the child and tells him how much he took from others and where he hides it. The family has discovered some of his past and have sworn he will never be ill treated again.Luke travels with the family onto other towns and when Lily is sick he gets to perform and make money at it. His dream of going to Miami is still in his mind. He is so fascinated by the craft of illusion and learning it.They take another into their household but find out he's stolen from their friends shops so they oust him, while he's telling them he's had sex with the younger daughter. They travel all over the world as a family to show others their shows of illusions while they steal things that are insured.

Another good book from Nora Roberts. An old one about a family of magicians.

This was a fun and feel good story. It was easy to get caught up in the emotion of this book. It's one of Nora Roberts's best skills. She can so easily make me fall in love with her characters! This book was so intriguing with all the magic and illusion. The Nuvel family was a traveling act. They did illusion sideshows and magic tricks. But when Luke fell into the family, instant attraction and friction began for little Roxanne Nuvel and Luke Calahan. As the family grew, so did the kids and their battle for power. Not only did this family perform, but they stole as well. They had rules and principles when it came to what and who they stole from, but that's how they made their living.Of course there was a villain. He was Sam Wyatt. And a villain he was. Not only a villain, but a political one, with ambitions of power. When he and Luke begin to battle, it's one that last for many years, but there can be only one winner. Luke's plans to destroy Sam are incredible and with Roxanne's help, it could work.Overall, not my favorite of Roberts's books, but this one was different. The magic aspect wasn't something that I've read about before, so it gave a little something to think about and digest. There were lots of twists and turns that kept me interested in the book and didn't let my mind wander while I was listening.

An oldie but goody. Of all the Nora Roberts stories I've ever read (and that's a fair chunk) this has always been my favorite. The chemistry between Luke and Roxanne had stars in my eyes for years. The way the story follows their lives from childhood to jaded adulthood . . . you'll find no cheesy, unrealistic attraction here. You actually get to see them fall in love over a course of years, and it's a delightful ride.

Roxy Nouvelle is a master magician, just like her father - and just like her father, she's also a highly successful jewel thief. Luke Callahan is part of Roxy's past. A fellow magician, conman, and thief, he learned his trade from Roxy's father Max. He also loved, and then abandoned Roxy. Now he's back, and trouble's come with him.Jumping back and forth between present day and past events, Roberts weaves a story of family, love, betrayal, revenge and depravity. Classic Roberts - it holds up well even a decade later.

I've always adored Nora Roberts. This book is no exception. It was a wonderful story, and it left you with absolutely no doubt as to the characters in the story, and their personalities and background. I truly fell in love with all the characters--with some obvious exceptions, by way of the "bad guy", and whatnot--and loved the book, beginning to end.
