About this audiobook

Shadows of the Empire illuminates the shadowy outlines of a criminal conspiracy that exists in the background of the events in the movies, ruled by a character new to us. Prince Xizor is a mastermind of evil who dares to oppose one of the best-known fictional villains of all time: Darth Vader. The story involves all the featured Star Wars movie characters, plus Emperor Palpatine and, of course, Lord Vader himself.

I think Perry does a better job of character devlopment than most other Star Wars authors, and Prince Xixor might be my favorite bad guy ever. Perry did a great job with him, in my opinion. "To contend with Xixor is to lose. Also, an attack on me will also be judged a suicide." Heh.

This book, set in between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, where we find Luke, Leia, Lando, and Chewie trying to find a way to rescue Han before he is delivered to Jabba the Hutt as a frozen block of carbonite. Of course, a wrench gets thrown into their preparations when a new villain is introduced: the cunning Prince Xizor, leader of the massive underground criminal organization, Black Sun. Xizor wants to kill Luke for a very simple reason: Vader wants Luke alive. Xizor figures that with Luke (a major threat to the Empire) out of the way, Xizor will be able to get rid of Vader and overthrow the Emperor. I'm sure it all makes sense to him. Anyway, our heroes get side-tracked in the quest for Han when Leia gets trapped in Xizor's palace as a way to lure Luke to him. So now Lando, Chewie, Luke, and some old and new friends have to find a way to evade their enemies, rescue Leia, take down Xizor, and find Han, all while Luke is trying to become a Jedi Knight. Nothing is ever easy in a galaxy far, far away.Generally, I enjoyed this book. It was a fun adventure story, and I liked learning about Luke's journey towards becoming a full-fledged Jedi Knight, something we didn't get to see in the films. The witty banter was also pretty spot on. However, I rolled my eyes really hard at the "super-sexy, irresistible to women" villain trope. Because of course Xizor was, and of course Leia would be the one to fall into that trap. I just think it's lazy writing, in my opinion. I want my Princess Leia badass, sharp, and sarcastic. Not overcome by reptilian pheromones and waiting to be rescued. She does have her moments to shine, though, so there's that at least.

Just trash. The new characters, including a ridiculous reptilian Casanova, are cardboard and boring, and it says nothing interesting about the mainstays of the original trilogy. Just an ill-conceived project from the get-go.

As Star Wars novels go, this isn't one of the best written but the storyline gives readers a glimpse of what happened between movies five and six. Luke continues to develop in the force, the beginnings of Han's rescue are out in place and there's quite a lot about Darth Vader and his rivalry with Prince Xizor for the Emperor's favor.

Star Wars Shadows Of The Empire is one of only two books that take place between Star Wars V and VI. The plot is highly engaging and all the classic characters feel right. Luke, Leia, Lando and Chewbacca are out to save Han Solo in this rip roaring adventure that starts good and gets better. There are some new characters introduced as well as one especially great rivalry between Darth Vader and Prince Xizor. Over all, it's a fun read with never a dull moment. If you like classic Star Wars, you'll have to try this novel.

How is this not a movie yet??This book fills in the gaps between ESB and RotJ... Leia a bounty hunter.. yup, Lando in Jabbas.. yup. This is a masterful stroke of genius in the compendium of Star Wars and an ABSOLUTE must read by anyone who likes star wars.
