An entertaining epic…

An imaginative reinvention of a classic epic, this entertaining foray into Ancient Greece will satisfy lovers of literature and poetry alike.

Описание

The legend begins...

Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. "The best of all the Greeks"-strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess-Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine-much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles' mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

When word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped, the men of Greece, bound by blood and oath, must lay siege to Troy in her name. Seduced by the promise of a glorious destiny, Achilles joins their cause, and torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus follows. Little do they know that the Fates will test them both as never before and demand a terrible sacrifice.

Built on the groundwork of the Iliad, Madeline Miller's page-turning, profoundly moving, and blisteringly paced retelling of the epic Trojan War marks the launch of a dazzling career.

I just love it. One of the best read that I had. Will definitely do a repeat on this one.

Sensational. This stellar book is a fantastic re-imagining of the rich classics I devoured as a child. It carried me through my own odyssey and I am forever grateful.

The book itself is fantastic, but the audiobook is not. The voice choices just don’t resonate. Highly recommend the ebook or hardcopy.

This was REALLY well written, and a sweet story. It just isn’t in the realm of genres I typically enjoy.

I really don't know what to think. I know I'm glad I finally read it. I really recommend it, but- idk... I have some mixed feelings about this one :')

Beautiful re-telling of the Achilles myth through the eyes of Patroclus. Excellent narration. Highly recommend. Will listen again.

Thank you for this it was such a beautiful listen.

It was a nice read, it didn’t emotionally destroy me but I loved the attention to detail and this and this and this
The sweetness that was felt. About love being messy and complicated and grey. It was nice.

The story of Achilles is told through Patroclus loving but truthful eyes - the boy and the man he becomes. It's a fantasy story - the gods live among men and affects their lives. Loved it

I was told this book would make me cry, and now I see why. It was very very good five stars all the way
  • (5/5)
Spectacular. A truly masterful writer and a true masterpiece of a book.

How will I ever read another book after this… please read this. It’s a masterpiece.

The audio version of this book was super. I was completely mesmerized by both the wonderful story line of the Greek half God Achilles and the audio of the book. The narrator truly brings it to life. I felt totally as if I was right there with Achilles as he lived and experienced his life. I couldn’t recommend this book or this audio version more for your literary enjoyment.

I AM MAD. WHY DID I NOT CRY?? I HONESTLY FELT NOTHING???
I LIKED THE FIRST PART BUT THEN IT GOT BORING AND THE ENDING WASN'T EVEN THAT PAINFUL AS I EXPECTED IT TO BE. PROPER REVIEW TO COME URGGSHDHSG

I will add another 5 stars to all the reviews for the marvelous book. Engaging from beginning to end.

Phenomenal. If you read anything in 2022 let it be this.

Such a beautiful, beautiful story. A must read for everyone!
  • (5/5)
I wanted more ??. I didn’t want the story to end.
  • (5/5)
I'm fucking weeping. If you're like me and read the Iliad before then you know what's gonna happen more or less but this story really manages to twist the knife, and now I'm crying in the comment section.

Excellently written and performed! A masterpiece of visual and mental imagery! The only con is the graphic sexual scenes which are ultimately necessary to understand the depth between the characters. It's a trade off but definitely uncomfortable.
  • (5/5)
Splendid writing bringing back all the splendors of greeek mythology .
  • (5/5)
It is a heartbreakingly beautiful work of art. The story is so beautifully written that it just pulls the reader in.
  • (5/5)
Amazing. Deep heart, compelling characters, heartbreaking love story, but still satisfying in the end. A true feat to span years, yet keep the reader captivated and engrossed throughout.
  • (4/5)
I enjoyed this a lot. Especially due to the narrator who breathed life into Miller's words. I can, however, say that the ending was the absolute best part.
  • (5/5)
Very well written and entertaining. I'm not sure that it's based on myth or imagination, but be prepared to read of love that included a beautiful relationship between two men.
  • (4/5)
the narration of the audiobook is phenomenal!! not only did the writing pull on my heartstrings, but so did the emotion within the narration… both the book and the audiobook are great!
  • (5/5)
I loved it. Brilliant writing, Patroclus was kind and I loved him till the end.
  • (5/5)
Some of the most beautiful and moving prose I’ve ever read. Miller has gifted us a treasure worthy of Akhian spoils.
  • (3/5)
I stretched in my attempt to read this one. Greek mythology is not my jam, but I gave it a go. I actually enjoyed the writing and the way it was written. I'm not going to give less than three stars though as it's not the author's fault I can't get on board with mythology.

I haven't read the Iliad, but after this work I will certainly do! Beautifully written, amazingly narrated, a true masterpiece!
