This book starts off shortly after the end of Tempest Rising, book one of the series. Jane is training with Nell (a gnome) and Trill (a kelpie), but having a hard time getting a handle on her powers. But she is making progress, as she still has both eyebrows!Jane’s romantic Valentine’s Day weekend with her vampire boyfriend Ryu is interrupted when they’re attacked by fire balls. Suddenly, Jane is smack dab in the middle of an investigation, Alfar political games, and trying to avoid people determined to kill her! She wonders why people keep trying to kill her, and I tend to agree with her that it’s not fun. Ever since she discovered that she is a Halfling, Jane’s life has been anything but dull!We see a little more of Jane’s succubus friend Iris, her bookstore friends Grizzie and Tracy, the barghest Anyan, and also meet Ryu’s team of deputies. I especially liked Julian, another Halfling, and Caleb, a satyr. Nicole is great with fleshing out secondary characters and making them well-rounded after only a brief description. Love these guys!Jane still has her great sense of humor, and I love some of the comments she makes when I would probably be shaking in my boots. Of course, she’s shaking in her boots while making those snarky comments, but I’d be frozen in fear as well, so she’s way braver than me! She’s also something of a gourmet, as there was a strange pause when we have sort of a weird cooking segment with Anyan. I’m thinking that Nicole was hungry when she wrote this scene, as she describes what they’re cooking in so much detail that I could probably replicate the meal in my kitchen! Was a strange little scene that didn’t seem to fit, and stuck in my head for some reason. Gave this book a 5/5 as I finished it in one sitting! Couldn’t put it down, and I couldn’t wait to see what happened next! Jane is still a run-away-and-hide type of girl, but is becoming more confident and growing as a person. While aware of her physical limitations, she’s smart and figures out a few things that Ryu and his experienced team missed. Go Jane! Loved this book, and highly recommend it as a fast, fun fantasy read!

This is the second book in the Jane True series with 6 books currently on contract. The third book, Tempest Legacy, comes out in Jan 2011. I really enjoyed this book, even more than the first one, Tempest Rising. This book picks up a few months after the first one leaves off. Jane is with Nell getting lessons on how to use her supernatural powers as a selkie. Then Ryu whisks Jane back to his home town of Boston for a romantic Valentine's Day weekend. Unfortunately things don't go as planned. People are ending up dead in a very crispy way and it is likely that a fire genie halfling with a serious grudge is responsible. Instead of being romanced by Ryu Jane is drawn into supernatural politics, running for her life, and hunting down a viscous murderer. The only good thing about it all is she is getting a lot of on the run training in her new powers. This was a wonderful book. Like the first book Jane is funny and down to earth, she is a bit of a dork at points which only serves to make her more likable. There are some sizzling scenes between her and Ryu and more feeling begins to develop between them (although I am still having trouble taking Ryu completely seriously). Jane is starting to take charge of her life; she is working on her training and starting to stand up for herself. We meet a lot of new interesting characters and get to learn a lot more about some of the ones introduced in the first book. My favorite is the Barghest Anyan, who we saw some of in the first book. He gets involved in this book in a big way. You also learn a lot more about how the Court operates and how they are governed. A new part of the supernatural community called the Borderlands is introduced; I am eager to hear more about the Borderlands in future books. The pace of this book is faster than the second and there is a lot more action. I like how Jane knows her limits and tries to help in anyway she can, but stays out of the way in areas she doesn't excel in. I also enjoyed how Jane acts like an intelligent woman and doesn't just let herself get swept off her feet by Ryu but seriously looks at her relationship with him. I enjoyed some of the decisions she made towards the end of the book and think that this book really helped Jane grow as a character.Overall a really great installment in this series. I am now officially hooked on Jane True. This book takes the series from a fun light read, to a fun read with some serious mojo going on. There is better world-building, better action, better plot, and great characterization in this book. I can't wait to read the next book, Tempests Legacy.

A good second book in the "Jane True" series. I am a big fan of origin stories, so this one didn't WOW me as much as the first one. But, though I enjoy most of the characters, I am becoming less a fan of Ryu the more the book goes on, I seriously hope that Ms. Peeler plays with the sexual tension between Jane and another male character (who shall remain nameless), that pairing shows promise.

Also, once again, it would appear that as much as I might like the characters or enjoy the book, it really is more the "world" itself that I find interesting. It is reasonably well-crafted, though the storytelling could be better (it is rated as "good ") and I REALLY enjoy exploring this world.

Not as enjoyable as the first, but decent overall. I am very glad that Jane finally learned to actually DO something with her powers and that she got rid of Ryu. Looking forward to the next in the series.

Move over, Mercy Thompson, Kate Daniels, Sookie Stackhouse, and the other strong, wonderful woman characters that populate today's urban fantasy landscape. I love you all dearly, and hold my breath for your new books, but it is time to scootch over a bit, as Jane True has come to town! I just found Jane while perusing my local bookstore, and I couldn't be happier.

Jane is a very complex character. If you really haven't had any "life experience" (read here, if you don't understand loss, mourning, or the pain of living where everyone knows you, and holds your family's history against you) then you probably won't understand Jane. But if you do, her strength of character can absolutely rock your world, like it did mine.

Jane is a reluctant hero, and yet her ability to roll with the punches and become more than she had ever thought she could be is a HUGE encouragement to women who have been drug through the tunnel and come out on the other side stronger than ever.

The characters are well developed, the storyline keeps you guessing, and it is great fun watching how Jane grows and learns her own strengths - strengths she never dreamed she could possess. And she has a tremendous sense of humour, and a potty mouth to match. I have been spending my mornings, before work, sitting outside in the sun, reading Jane's exploits while laughing laughing like a loon at her hysterical dialog (her mental libido cracks have me rolling on the floor). She is strong, strong-willed, and one of the most likable of all the tough female urban fantasy characters that I adore.

The more I read this series, the more impressed I am. Underneath the giggles and the libido, Nicole Peeler has a rock solid respect for her characters' humanity and foibles. Don't be too distracted by the magical politicking, this book at its heart is a smart, razor sharp look at the power in relationships, both romantic and otherwise.

In particular, I loved Jane's reactions to Conleth, the damaged, pitiable halfling on a rampage through Boston. Jane has a full palette of responses (everything from, "That poor boy!" to "Ew, don't touch me"), and I applauded as she parsed these responses to come to some painful, but inevitable conclusions.

I was also very happy with the movement in her relationship with "Ryu T. Toodles" (fabulous!) and the ever enigmatic Anyan. These positive developments were enough to get me through the parts where I hated the villains in this book so badly that I wanted to hurl my eReader across the room. Reprehensible, irredeemable, bastards, all of them.

Can't wait to start the next in the series, Peeler has definitely built up my expectations and excitement.

Review courtesy of Dark Faerie TalesQuick & Dirty: A comedic adventure investigating a series of supernatural serial killings while on a romantic getaway. Opening Sentence: This time was for real. The Review: The second installment from the Jane True series, Tracking the Tempest, is set four months after the end of the last book. Jane True, a half-selkie, has come to accept the reality of her heritage and membership in the new and dangerous world of the Alfar and the supernatural community. She is now learning how to hone her powers and is, in turn, becoming more self-confident. When a romantic Valentine’s weekend with her vampire boyfriend morphs into an investigation involving several brutal murders; Jane, Ryu, and Anyan come together again to stop a madman hell bent on destruction. But is Jane prepared to face the reality of the motivations of the killer, a halfling like herself? Jane definitely shows signs of growth since the first book; she has become more focused and confident, both in her mannerisms and in her relationship. Jane is no longer the girl that just accepts her lot in life. She is slowly integrating herself into the supernatural community by learning how to control her magic and in dealing with the politics of this new world. All of these things contribute to her transition from “taker” to “doer”. In that respect, she is more aware of what she would like to have in her life instead of accepting whatever comes her way. Though she is still unsure of her path, she is beginning to take the steps necessary for her happiness. Jane’s relationship with Ryu is complicated. Initially, they are both content to have a long-distance exclusive relationship. Four months since they became a couple, Ryu is now dropping hints of wanting more. During their weekend together, Jane gets a much clearer picture of what being with Ryu entails. Not only does she feel convenient to him (she is a source of food for him, after all), she feels a bit coddled. He doesn’t want to admit that she can be an asset to his investigation. Let’s face it; no woman wants her man to see her as inferior. All of these things contribute to the decline, and possible end, of their relationship. If Ryu is out of the way, will Jane finally make her move on the sexy barghest, Anyan? The overall climate in the supernatural community is tense. There is more and more disturbing information regarding “halfling” treatment. The introduction of Conleth, a halfling driven mad from life-long experimentation, has brought home the realization to Jane about the mistreatment of people like herself. She sees within Conleth what could have potentially happened to her. And no matter how she might hate him and his motivations, Jane will always feel sorry for Conleth’s pain. This, too, reinforces Jane’s decision to stay within her little town of Rockabill and far away from the machinations of Alfar politics. I must say that I enjoyed the joking and comradery among Jane’s new friends. Even during times of crisis, she knows and trusts those around her to have her back. It helps give the overall book comic relief amidst much more serious events. This book is a wonderful sequel to what is becoming a favorite series for me. I look forward to discovering what direction Ms. Peeler takes our trouble magnet in future books. Notable Scene: “Um, Anyan?” “Yes?” “Is there a bathroom?” The barghest stopped. “What?” “Is there a bathroom? I really have to pee.” “You have got to be kidding me,” Anyan said, swinging around to stare at me like I was crazy. “No, I’m not. I really have to pee. I drank, like, a whole liter of water, and when I get stressed, I always need to pee. Getting kidnapped is stressful. Really, really stressful.” Anyan shook his head. “Jane, I don’t even know where to begin. I’m trying to rescue you from a psychotic serial killer who is apparently intent on impregnating you. And you want to take a potty break.”FTC Advisory: I purchased my own copy of Tracking the Tempest. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review. The only payments I receive are hugs and kisses from my little boys.

In which our heroine strongly begins to suspect that the supernatural lifestyle might not be all that it's cracked up to be, between the lethal and convoluted Alfar court politics, a crazed magical hybrid who is out for revenge, and Jane's sense that she is being driven into decisions that aren't in her best interest. I'd prefer not to say more as that would kill the fun, and take away from the poignancy.

I really like this series! I think that even in a market saturated with paranormal and urban fantasy it's still unique. I love Jane's personality and how she's so true to herself. She's kind and thoughtful and always has her family and friends in mind first of all. Their safety is first and foremost. That being said, I felt like this was a bit slow in the beginning. It may have been my mood but it didn't feel like it really picked up until later in the story. But once it did, well it was hard to put down! Constant action and twists and turns. In this one Jane is learning what powers she has and it's pretty cool to watch her toughen up and to learn how to use them.Ryu was great (and as hot as ever!) as well but we got to know a bit of another side of him. The control freak side, which wasn't so great, but also showed how much he cared for Jane.We also got to know Anyan a lot better! And as a person, not a dog! I think he's my favorite character in this book. We got a hint of a love triangle so I'm anxious to see if there's anything to that.We met many new characters in this book and some were infuriating! I'm anxious to read the next book and watch them get taken down (at least I hope they do!)!This really is a great series and I'm so glad I waited so that I can read the third book right away (well, after I get all my review books read...).

I've always enjoyed Nicole Peeler's writing and I think she is an awesomely (is that a word?) brash woman. (at least on Twitter LOL!)I read this one a few weeks ago but never got to sat anything since I've been so busy with the holidays. I have to tell you though...I really loved it! I of course loved the array of characters but I think I've started to favor Anyan in this one.Check out the series if you haven't yet!

I loved this book!! I thoroughly enjoyed Tempest Rising but this book was even better. Jane has already grown a lot in the series and we're only two books in. Something tells me that she is going to be unbelievably powerful and I'm so looking forward to that. It'll be nice to eventually see her kill Jarl's vindictive ass. I absolutely adored Anyan before and this book showed us more of Anyan as a man which was amazing. The book was very fast paced and the storyline is headed in a direction that I'm really looking forward to. Can't wait for the next one!!!

Jane has been training with Nell, Rockabill's Gnome, for the four months between Tempest Rising's end and now. She's learning; shields, creating glamours, and mage balls of light. Jane is the happiest she has been in a long, long time; with monthly rendezvous with Ryu, training, swimming, and taking care of her father, along with working at the Bookstore with her friends. Jane is starting to settle into her super live in the paranormal world. Although, she still thinks on the naga's murders from Tempest Rising - knowing deep down there had to be more behind the murders with Jarl than lead to believe. Ryu sent Jane a romantic invitation to come to his home in Boston for a lavish Valentines Day with him. While on their romantic evening out they are attacked by a man named Conleth, as Ryu believes. The secret Jane's been keeping from Ryu comes out in the open...I was so glad to be back in Rockabill with Jane True and all the sow named places. I also really enjoyed how Nicole took Jane out of her comfort zone and introduced us to so many new characters and ideas. We get to meet a whole new set of characters, Ryu's deputies and a few Alfar crew members. I really loved meeting Ryu's crew of deputies. Their abilities where all unique. I loved Julian and how he related with Jane. I enjoyed Daoud and Caleb and Jane's reaction to both of them. Then we also have Conleth, who has a long not so nice history to bring him to the point of dangerous he is. And it is all described to us very well, through the investigation Ryu and Jane undertake.Jane is a character I really enjoyed in Tempest Rising, but here in Tracking the Tempest she has grown a great deal for me. She's more open and comfortable with herself. Jane is learning how to protect herself in this new world she is learning about and doing rather well at it. Even when Jane is taken out of her element she still shines. As you read you know Jane is 'human' as she is afraid, and still has the tendency to want to flee rather than fight. And in some of her tight spots, I would too.The humor... Nicole is great at adding the one liners and quick clever, sarcastic, and/or sexy comments for the characters. I think I had a smile on my face through a majority of the book at all the quick jokes and answers or comments Jane and the other characters made. I absolutely loved the scene of Jane slipping on ice as she gets out of the car. I laughed out loud while I read it. And there is action to. This book doesn't sit still at all. There is always something happening to keep you flipping the pages. The book is a fantastic fast paced fun ride with terrific action and love.
