About this audiobook

Joe Hill's critically acclaimed, New York Times bestselling, Bram Stoker Award-winning debut chiller, Heart-Shaped Box, heralded the arrival of new royalty onto the dark fantasy scene. With Horns, he polishes his well-deserved crown. A twisted, terrifying new novel of psychological and supernatural suspense, Horns is a devilishly original triumph for the Ray Bradbury Fellowship recipient whose story collection, 20th Century Ghosts, was also honored with a Bram Stoker Award—and whose emotionally powerful and macabre work has been praised by the New York Times as, "wild, mesmerizing, perversely witty…a Valentine from hell."

Superb writing. A great story with very little filler. Hill is able to tell the story without getting bogged down in details, yet the details are quick and to the point. The apple did not fall far from the tree with Hill. But with that being said he has easily set himself apart from his old man. Ig is a flawed character, as they all are. This is what makes them real. Glenna comes across as a much more caring woman than Merrin. She seems self absorbed and dry as a person.

Have you ever read a book that you have become so invested in, that by the time it ends you feel lost and empty? You try to find something to fill the void that has been created by this book but nothing seems to fill it; no matter what you read. Well this is how I felt about Horns. Immediately when I saw the title and the front cover of the book, I thought that the story was going to be just another fantasy/horror. However three chapters into the story, I found myself subscribing to the old notion that one should never judge a book by its cover. The book started off weird, admittedly and that’s because the main character grew horns literally overnight and had the ability to negatively influence people’s behavior. Iggy Perrish could also see someone’s deepest darkest sins just by one touch. Slowly, his superhuman abilities begin to expose themselves and then you realize that Hill’s protagonist is in reality a devil. He snorts fire through his nostrils and can control snakes. He uses fire as a healing elixir and ironically adds a pitch fork to his ensemble. However, this devil seemed different almost compassionate. Iggy grew up in a largely Christian home with strong morals and values and though he had a wealthy upbringing, his character was very modest. When the love of his life is brutally murdered, all of that goes into disrepute. Iggy reminded me of the scenes painted in Milton’s Paradise Lost. He became an individual who you felt sorry for and at the end of it all he became a tragic hero.Hill is definitely a talented author in his own right. He used a lot of back story and flash backs in horns that became pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. None of the pieces were predictable and when they were matched together you really began to understand and appreciate the story. Also his characters are all bruised in some way and iggy brings out the worst in them. I particularly liked Lee whose back story led up to a mentally disturbed and perhaps psychotic villain. The lure to the story is that it’s really well written. Horns is about love and loss, friendship and betrayal and ultimately humanity and because Hill tells it with an air of Mystery/Fantasy/Horror you become invested in every word.I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from the author.

Reasonably well conceived idea, a bit contrived at times, it’s hard to come up with reasons why someone has horns growing overnight. This story hints at god/devil ideas with not much depth. It’s mostly working class/ Trailerpark trash characters with not much brain.

Great book... Much better than the movie and quite different so it's delightfully unpredictable... Joe is alot like his Dad theme wise but the characters are more defined at least in this one.

I have been on a stephen king binge since the beginning of the year. Got through roughly 12-13, and I found out that joe hill wrote this book, that had been turned into the movie I loved so much. I hadnt seen the movie in at least 3 years, probably a little closer to 5. I was shocked and stoked in equal measure. I started it and finished it in 3 sittings. This book is a BUMMER. So disgusting. So hard to hear. So hard to make yourself keep going, yet it was so charming and just heart felt. I cant quite imagine the brain power it must take to make someone feel all these feelings, constantly changing from chapter to chapter. This is quite easily the most well put together piece of literature I have ever invested in.

Phenomenal. Nuff said, for real. I had no idea the movie was based after this book, or that this book was even written, otherwise I would have watched the movie and read/listened to the book ages ago! I tell ya, if you're reading this review and you don't read the book, you're missing out, completely.

Of course the son of Stephen King is gonna be a brilliantly messed up writer. This is easily one of the most darkest, disturbing books I've ever read. Loved every second of it, I'll be grabbing a copy of Heart-Shaped Box whenever the opportunity arises. And this edition included a short story at the end, The Devil on the Staircase, which was pretty good too. I do enjoy that irregular formatting.

I'm not sure how to review this book. The writing is excellent--it trips along at an exhilarating clip, with faceted, sympathetic characters who make plausible, relatable decisions, and I couldn't put it down. But it was really upsetting, and I felt stressed and mean the whole time I was in its clutches. Did I chew through it because I was enjoying it, or because I wanted to be free of it? More the latter, I think. I tip my hat to the author, though; it is enviably capable writing.

The man learned from the greatest and he’s one if the very few authors who can compare. This is a fantastic novel. Joe can weave a take as well as his father, which is my absolute highest complement to an author.

I am not a big fan of horror/thriller novels, as my book list will clearly show. Nonetheless when I read the synopsis for this book, I had to give it a shot. What a fun read!I'd have to say this book is much more 'thriller' and less 'horror'. Having read none of Hill's other work, I cannot attest to this being his 'normal'. The writing is great, it pulls you in immediately. The story is engaging and just that much over the top that it entices you to read a little further (I'm a fan of authors like Christopher Moore where over the top is business as usual). There is a good helping of dark humor in this one, too. For people like me who do not generally gravitate toward these sort of novels, this is a great book. I highly recommend it!

Ig Perrish awakens from a drunken night and finds he has grown horns. Not only that strange things start to happen. Joe Hill is Stephen Kings son so its no surprise that he writes horror. At times with this book I thought I coukd have been reading a Stephen King. This book stsrted of for me quite well snd I was really enjoying it. However it comes clear about 200 pages in who killed Merrin, Igs girlfriend, if the reader hasn't already guessed. So I did think how can a further 200 pages be filled. I struggled because I felt the story was covering old ground and became very repeatative. My second niggke which is not the authors fault is that the book is full of snakes. I have a real phobia of snakes and found I was swuirming while reading and have to admit to skipping big chunks because of my phobia. The story all came together and Merrins actions made sense with the revelation towards the end. The book was a lot better than what I thought it would be, but very overlong at times.

Iggy Perrish wakes up on the one year anniversary of girlfriends rape and murder to find he has grown horns. Right there you know either this book is going to be phenomenal or just another pop lit, fast paced, fun read. Well, it was the former. I would not, however call it phenomenal. A great read and enjoying and I will probably read it again, but not out of this world great. The way Hill writes is addicting, he has a way with words that would make a lexicographer jealous. The plot kept changing and for me personally who can usually predict what will happen next in a book, I was surprised. I knew the eventual ending, but the twist and turns kept me guessing throughout. At times it caused me to consider if I was actually reading it right, but after another read of a paragraph yes, that is what was happening.I think the one thing which led me to like this book so much is the fact that it was not something which was whipped out in a couple of months and lauded by everyone as a great book, by an amazing author who has written scores of bestsellers. (I never read those. Too boring and predictable and most times not quite well written.)Overall, it was a good book and without giving away any details, definitely one to read again.

This was kind of depressing in a way, not always, just that, that poor poor guy! For a Ig has been shunned, everyone, well almost everyone thinks he raped and killed his girlfriend. And that his rich family got him free. Just move Ig, move. That town is horrible.

But as this is horror then things will get spooky. His gets horns, people start telling him their secrets, desires. And they tell him f:ed up things. Disturbing things, things he sure does not want to hear. Especially not from people he cares about.

With this new found ability the most obvious route is of course to try to find the real killer. The road there will give flashbacks about their love story, his friends, family and what led up to that dark night.

And it will get freaky too! I will not spoil things, but wtf? Some seriously weird things going on at the end.

I liked his journey, and story. I never knew where I had everyone, and I so wanted to real killer to pay in the end. And the end, well it was fitting for horror.
