      It has been quite some time since I have read this author, and this series is very recent. So when I saw this on the bookshelf at my local library, I knew I needed to try it out. There hasn't been one book of Showalter I didn't like. So I was very intrigued by the blurb so when I started reading it, I knew that this would be a book I could sink my teeth into. Last Kiss Goodnight deals with seeing a world where paranormal creatures exist who have a variety of talents and abilities. I loved the way that Showalter sets the scene for this story to begin. The plot does pick up pace pretty quickly, so no slow start for this one. The romance that blooms between Vika and Solo is pretty quick but not too quick to throw you off. I felt like it was very sweet and tender, and even though there is a level of intensity to the story, the romance isn't so much. Its more slow and steady yet wonderful to witness their connection. The characters were very intriguing. Vika is deaf, but can read lips, and I loved seeing her character have a disability, it makes her seem more human. She seemed to me to be more passive at times, but definitely has a passion that becomes more evident as you read through the story. Overall a contagious romance that will set your heart at a faster speed, and take you on a adventure of passion, suspense, paranormal creatures, and a fantastically written story!!TOTALLY CAPTIVATING!

      I wasted so much time waiting for this book to get better! It didn’t. It was absolutely terrible. Some of the things that irritates me the most:
      Very little consistency, vague descriptions about important details then too many details about things which were hardly important. A lead female character who was hard to like (if it was a guy who had violated an unconscious woman everyone would screaming assault, but because it’s a chick it’s sexy and ok?). And a main male character who got less likeable as he supposedly got nicer. Also I started to feel like I was at Sunday school. I’m here for a fantasy novel, not a sermon, quit preaching!
      Last but not least, apparently it took the deaf main character many, many encounters to notice her love interest’s luscious lips. Yet earlier in the book it stated that she had to keep studying his mouth to see what he was saying and he kept asking her “why are you staring at my mouth”. So if she didn’t notice them during all of that she must have been deaf as well as blind!
      Such an annoyingly terrible book. It’s still bugging me a week later haha

      Gena Showalter brings a whole new world to light. The story was a harrowing one and I almost turned it off, I’m so glad I kept going. Vika and Solo’s story was as beautiful as it was painful. I appreciate the depth explored in these characters and how they found beauty in the ugliest of places. I loved it.

      Last Kiss Goodnight by Gena Showalter OtherWorld Assassin book 1. Paranormal romance. Good vs Evil. Solomon Judah wakes up in a Circus cage. Unable to escape due to high-tech bindings, he’s at the mercy of care keepers and the venomous circus owner. Vika Lukas knows exactly how bad the punishment for not obeying can be. Deaf because of those punishments, Vika is extra careful around all the caged otherworld beings while she feeds and bathes them and plans for her eventual escape. Vika is truly heartbreaking in what’s she’s gone through from her father’s supposed loving. Her strength in enduring is unending. But sad too. Solo has had a difficult life as well but is used to having autonomy that is severely restricted here. His Angel and Demon shoulder riders make his internal thoughts and decisions very apparent. When they transfer to Vika, she gains a bit of power and protection. A slow burn romance unlike other series by this author.An escape from evil that is difficult and requires faith and endurance. Each chapter begins with a bible verse which bothered some readers. I tend to ignore what I’m not invested in so those headings mostly disappeared for me. An interesting series first book with vivid world building. I look forward to the second knowing the evil from this book at least is gone. For now.

      A book about differences, evilness and how gruel people can be. A love story but also a story about a survival and I couldn't have hoped for more. I love Gena Showalter's books and I cannot wait to get my hands on another one. Just lovely.

      I spent the first half of this book wondering if I had missed something - the lack of context for X and Dr. E confused the hell out of me - I felt like I was supposed to know more than I did. I think I am up to date on all of Gena's work but I'll have to double-check as I still feel a little confused. Regardless, I liked this quite a bit. The book seemed a bit sweeter/cuter than her other series but I still enjoyed it despite the less steamy sex scenes. The relationship between Solo and Vika was sugary but not annoyingly so. I look forward to more books from this world!

      Macho man Solo finds himself in a cage, drugged unable to free himself. He is is a circus of others, run by a mad man, a wicked warlock and his daughter. The cruelty leveled on the others is heartbreaking and the daughter is driven to try to help. There is a problem with that, she is a captive herself. After years of horrible abuse, she tries and now she wants to try for Solo.
      This is a pretty dark fantasy/romance. 9/10 of the book is about being captive, controlled, and finally escaping. The last part is the HEA. Yes there is a kind of HEA, but it was so rushed it seemed to quickly over and finished after the long road to get there. I have not read The Alien Huntress series which I guess this is a spin off of. I got confused on a few characters and who/what there were. I plan on re-reading this after I read that series. I enjoyed it, but didn't love it.

      Solo is just the kind of hero I like. He's had a hard life and he's never really been anything but alone. An allorian, he can change into a gigantic devil-like creature who is extremely powerful. He's captured and put in the circus. Vika is the circus owner's daughter. She tends to all the "animals."

      The characterization was good. The plot was good. But, somehow the romantic tension never really took off. Solo immediately understands that Vika is not the enemy. I think the tension would've been served better by a longer period where he does not trust her. In fact, I really wanted him to hate her for a little while.

      This is my first time reading this author. I was very excited by the blurb. It's possible my expectations gotten the way of totally enjoying this book. Yes, I liked it. But, it wasn't quite as good as I'd hoped. It's possible I'll like it more upon a second reading.

      I was really excited to read this book and specifically requested this book from the library, but I was disappointed. I really wanted this book to be good, but it wasn't. I liked that it had a biblical quote at the beginning of each chapter because the main character's name was Solomon Judah. It referenced Song of Solomon and I thought that was lovely. It was a cool concept that there were attractive species from different planets in a zoo, but there were too many to keep track of without using their names and only referencing their species. It focused on the girl and her father's abusive relationship, and I wish it centered more on the romantic dynamic between Solo and Vika. It was an interesting story, but I wanted more smut. Sorry, but I applaud you for your efforts.

      This story was okay. It is extremely dark with a lot of abuse and evil. Even with that the hero that can't control his temper, shows us an extremely sweet and protective side. Doesn't have the sizzling sex scenes or the dark sense of humor we normally get from a Showalter book. I'm interest to see where she goes with series.

      NOT WORTH IT

      Nothing happens but cage, beating, humiliation for 3/4 of the book. All during this time it was childish, felt like a young adult book, and you were getting preach at about good vs evil and love vs hate in a very black and white way. All the bad people, completely bad, evil, no redemption. The good people, could get their redemption but had to let evil out, yadda, yadda, yadda.... angel vs devil figure on the shoulders. The story of David and Goliath. The Bible verse every chapter, argh, preach, preach, preach.... And then at end the soft sex.

      I would say I hated it except I didn't hate the last 80 or so pages, but I didn't like them so much either. There is a lot of boring for hundreds of pages to get to that 80 at the end and it is not worth it. And I didn't even love the last pages either, it was just a satisfying end... kinda, not really.

      There was no fun in this book.

      The only thing good about this book was the ending and that wasn't very good either, just OK.

There is something that just CLICKS about 1/2 of the way through. The characters, the story, the action, the love, the suspense, and your heart just combine to reach a perfect storm. At that moment, I knew that sticking out the emotional rawness of the first half was well worth the wait. As Kelly would say: THINGS HAPPEN Y'ALL (ok she wouldn't say y'all but I am a Texan)!Character Thoughts: The characters in Last Kiss Goodnight (all of them) are really intense. The good guys, the bad guys, the circus performers, and the men of books to come are all very in your face with how they are. I actually like when a character is almost unapologetic about who they are and their motivations for doing things. That being said there were times when Solo and Vika got in their own way because of their fierce knowledge in who they were. I really liked Vika even when she had to make choices that I didn't agree with. She was a character that had to fight tooth and nail for everything. She did so without loosing herself and that makes her worthy of happiness.Audio Thoughts: Narrated by George Newbern/Running Time 10 hrs and 12 minsI have a new narrator to add to my list because George Newbern is as good as Luke Daniels. Seriously, I was amazed at how easily I was transported into this story and his effortless telling of it. The voices, nuances, pacing, and emotions were spot on for the tone of this story. Just call me gobsmacked because there are very few guys that are on my favorites list and he just made it!Final Thoughts: This book has a very rough beginning that not everyone will like or read through. If you do stick with it though I can almost guarantee that you will be looking forward to the next one in the series as much as I am!NOTE: Thank you Kelly for telling me to stick with it!

      REALLY! Ok, so i read the back and thought this book was different... It was about people from other planets and special ops.. Its was hard for me to get past the alien thing, however the suspense of the book make me read on. Not bad

      Last Kiss Goodnight is the first in the Otherworld Assassin series, a spinoff of the Alien Huntress series. Solo is a block ops agent who is sold to a circus that features a zoo filled with Otherworlders; he wakes to find himself caged like an animal and on display for all to see. Vika is the circus owner's daughter, deaf by her father's hand and trapped in a violent life; she's been carefully planning her escape but needs to wait a while longer before she can put her plans into action. Solo and Vika are immediately drawn to each other, but can she abandon her plans to help him and the rest of the Otherworld captives? As with many of Showalter's books, this one has plenty of well-imagined, long suffering characters who only want to be happy in life. There is also a good dose of violence. It was a good story that moved along at a brisk pace. I enjoyed it, but have to admit I missed the gang from the original Alien Huntress series. I hope they either show up more prominently in this series or more of their own books are to come. There will clearly be more books in the Otherworld Assassin series, as the fates of a few characters was left wide open.

      Our Review by LITERAL ADDICTION's Pack Alpha - Michelle L. Olson:I adore Gena Showalter's books. I'm obsessed with LOTU, devour the Alien Huntress books, and am smitten with her new YA. So, when I heard that Gena was writing an Alien Huntress spin-off I was beyond excited. First off, as always and expected from Gena, Last Kiss Goodnight gives us a fascinating world, lovable characters, & a unique story.Gena celebrates her faith in this book by prefacing each new chapter with a bible verse, and uses tie ins to those for the characters and their plight. Some readers might not like this, but knowing how important Gena's faith is to her, I found it wonderful to see her openly celebrating it in such a manner. Vika is a wonderful heroine. She's strong, smart, spunky, and overcoming some incredible challenges. I love strong heroines and while she has her vulnerabilities she is exactly that. Solo is an interesting hero. He's got some baggage and definitely is struggling with some self esteem problems, but I like that he's different and I love the way he cares for Vika and his friends.So, all-in-all, while I didn't love Last Kiss Goodnight as much as I do Gena's other books (it just wasn't as action packed or sexy to me), it was an enjoyable read and was wonderfully written.LITERAL ADDICTION gives Last Kiss Goodnight 3 1/2 Skulls.
