About this audiobook
Having survived torture and imprisonment during China’s Cultural Revolution, Benfu escaped to find love with his compassionate and beautiful Calla Lily. Together they build a fulfilling life around the most menial of jobs—Benfu’s work collecting trash. As he sorts through the discards of others, he regularly discovers abandoned children. With unwavering determination, he and Calli spend decades creating a family of hand-picked daughters that help heal the sorrow and brighten their modest home. But all is not perfect and when crisis threatens to separate their family, Benfu—or possibly his band of headstrong daughters—must find a way to overcome the biggest hardship yet.
Inspired by a true story, and set against the backdrop of a country in transition, The Scavenger’s Daughters is a sweeping present-day saga of triumph in the face of hardship, and the unbreakable bonds of family against all odds.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5An uplifting tale based on a true story of a family of a so called scavenger - someone who sorts through the unwanted or discarded detritis of China after the Cultural revolution and their fight to get on in the world.
Can't wait to read more about this family.
I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in return for an honest unbiased review. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Very, very nice story! The wonderful premise of a man who has to scavenge for a living, eking out a meager existence from other people's throwaways, finding that daughters are also considered throwaways. With a heart of gold, he and his wife adopt all of these found girls, regardless of age, physical condition and the fact that they can barely feed them. What they have in abundance, however, is love, care, respect and a sense of belonging.
In a day that material possessions seem to define the worth of a person, this story about the love of a family was as refreshing as a koi pond.
Highly recommended. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Another reviewer summarized this book beautifully; a trash collector takes in abandoned females in China. Naturally, he struggles to provide for them but their home is filled with love and contentment. As he ages he finds it harder to provide for them. I found that this novel lacked an urgency to the narrative that make it difficult for me to want to pick up and read; it was more of stream-of-consciousness, which is kind of boring.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5In present day China, a trash collecter stumbles across abondoned baby girls among the garbage. For those lucky enough to be found, they are provided a humble, loving home with the trash collector and his wife. As the couple ages, they worry and wonder what will become of their youngest foundlings. Another fantastic story by Kay Bratt with the promise of two eagerly awaited sequels.
