About this audiobook

An Entertainment Weekly Best Tell-All of 2013!

One of Parade Magazine's Best Books About Movies/TV of 2013!

The behind the scenes story of the network that shaped a generation

Slimed! is the first oral history to chronicle the surprisingly complex, wonderfully nostalgic, and impressively compelling story of Nickelodeon, the first kids' network. Beginning as a DIY start-up in the late seventies, the network forged ahead through the early eighties with a tiny band of young artists and filmmakers, transforming itself into a cultural force in the late eighties and nineties that would change everything about cable television, television in general, animation, and children's entertainment. Compiled from hundreds of original interviews with writers, actors, producers, artists, and other Nick alumni, this is the incredible story of Nickelodeon straight from those who made it happen. Whether you've always wondered if Sam ever fell out of Clarissa's window, what the real story was behind Ren & Stimpy, how an entire network was built on kids-first entertainment, or you just want to relive some of your favorite television memories, it's time to get Slimed!

Anyone who grew up watching Nickelodeon during it's heyday needs to read this.

A fun and informative look at a network that has a hand in shaping young people from those directly involved.

Interesting, but I was a younger child during many of the shows discussed (Roundhouse, Wild & Crazy Kids, Hey Dude, etc.) so I don't remember or never saw them. I do remember the title of W&CK, and recall one episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark (weirdly, it's the one Jewel Staite is in as a painter girl), but definitely had to refer to the "Cast of Characters" list in the back to figure out who was talking about what.

Definitely not my favorite book of the year. I thought it would be really fun and nostalgic, but I didn't find this book all that interesting until the last few chapters. It was cool to see what some of my fav. childhood actors had to say about some things though. 3 out of 5 stars.

I have to agree with the other reviewer here. I was very excited to listen to this book as I thought I was a big Nickelodeon fan growing up in the 90s, but all of this book is a bunch of interviews done by a bunch of different Nickelodeon actors and actresses. Unless you really know the names of the people on the Nickelodeon shows, a lot of these people you probably won't even recognize. I only recognized a few. It is cool to see how they thought growing up and acting, but I would say that because of the format the book it's not really a history of Nickelodeon. It's a recollection of all the actors on the show remembering what it was like growing up and working when Nickelodeon was just getting started. In book formant it might be easier to understand, but not in audio.

I was born in 1983 and watched a ton of Nick growing up, so I have to think I'm exactly the intended target audience for this book--and I was incredibly excited when I learned of its existence!

Unfortunately, as others have noted, the book's structure keeps it from living up to its potential. It is really cool that Klickstein talked to so many people from Nickelodeon's "golden age", but it's extremely frustrating to try to follow the conversation when the focus switches rapidly from show to show without any kind of signal or transition, and you often don't know who the person is who's speaking or what question they might be responding to. Constantly having to flip back to the appendix to try to remember which show a particular person worked on makes it very, very hard to get lost in the book.

I can only hope that Klickstein is working on a follow-up that will be more of a narrative history of Nickelodeon. I don't doubt that he has lots of good material for one!
