About this audiobook

When all signs point to heartbreak, can love still be a rule of the road? A poignant and romantic novel from the author of Bittersweet and Twenty Boy Summer.

Jude has learned a lot from her older sisters, but the most important thing is this: The Vargas brothers are notorious heartbreakers. She's seen the tears and disasters that dating a Vargas boy can cause, and she swore an oath-with candles and a contract and everything-to never have anything to do with one. Now Jude is the only sister still living at home, and she's spending the summer helping her ailing father restore his vintage motorcycle-which means hiring a mechanic to help out. Is it Jude's fault he happens to be cute? And surprisingly sweet? And a Vargas?

Jude tells herself it's strictly bike business with Emilio. Her sisters will never find out, and Jude can spot those flirty little Vargas tricks a mile away-no way would she fall for them. But Jude's defenses are crumbling, and if history is destined to repeat itself, she's speeding toward some serious heartbreak…unless her sisters were wrong? Jude may have taken an oath, but she's beginning to think that when it comes to love, some promises might be worth breaking.

This novel was powerful and well-written, however, the book didn't stand out from all the other contemporaries. I will try some more Sarah Ockler, as this book did have some good parts and I have heard so much praise.

The tragic part was the father's case of Alzheimer's. This frequently left me in tears. We see how the illness effects the family. I felt like the reactions from family and friends Papi's condition were very realistic, and the father's episodes were heartbreaking and real. Please note that, in my opinion, the disease was the most impressive part of The Book of Broken Hearts, along with the diversity of the characters!

The romance aspect was sweet, but not very developed in my opinion. Also, I had very conflicting feelings about Jude. I enjoyed the character growth, however, the ending just didn't do it for me. It seemed a little too... macho I guess. Kind of overdone. Don't get me wrong, it is a beautifully written ending, just not realistic for me. Also, there was a lot of other things I wanted to know that weren't mentioned or concluded well.

I really don't know what my problem was besides those little complaints, the book just plain didn't leave an impression on me. At all, really. Do you know that read that you know a lot of people will like, and that something is wrong with you because your mind keeps straying? Yeah, that was The Book of Broken Hearts to me.

Overall, this book had factors I liked... and factors I didn't. The Papi's Alzheimer's tore at my heart, and I loved the character diversity yet the romance and ending were very "meh". I would recommend this novel to big-time contemporary fans.

3.5/5 stars... I am not sure if I should round up or down... *sigh*

This was a review that was very hard to write. I had so many feelings while reading this, I felt like none of the words I came up with would do any justice. So I'll do my best at trying to get this right. The main thing I loved about this book was the characters. They felt so genuine and real. It was so easy to connect with them and feel everything that they felt. The situation with Jude and her father was heartbreaking. Having known someone with Alzheimer's I could connect with her on a deeper level and feel the emotional battle she had within herself. Also, as I'm in love, I could definitely connect to the way that she felt about Emilio. As my mother told me "You can't help who you love. It shouldn't matter about their color or gender, long as they make you happy." In this book, it shouldn't have mattered about his last name. Emilio was an amazing guy. He had his share of emotional baggage, but it truly made him wh he was. He made so many important decisions based on the one thing that happened to him, and it in turn made him a man. The romance in this story is phenomenal. In no way does it feel rushed or insta-lovey. It actually has a very unique twist to the story, with the Book of Broken Hearts. The Book has been passed down through the Hernandez family and it finally made its way down to Jude. It was a huge part in keeping her away from Emilio, but because of this, it made their love so much stronger. Overall, whatever you're expecting about this book, don't. It has so much more depth than you think and it will leave you with an unusual heartbreak. The Book of Broken Hearts is a swirling mix of emotions that will leave you with a lot more than you bargained for.

So I think its safe to say I loved this book, I could not put it down. It had such raw emotion in it that I felt myself close to tears a good handful of times and I almost never cry at a book any more. The characters and the written were some of the strongest I have read in a long, the story line. Oh god the storyline. I just cant.As the description states, Jude Hernandez must never date a Vargas boy, no exceptions. The exact words she took in the vow isI, Jude Hernadez, vow to never, ever, under any circumstances within or outside of my control, even if the fate of humanity is at stake, even if my own life is threatened, get involved with a VargasThe oldest Hernadez sister Lourdes was hurt by Miguel Vargas at their prom, Celi was engaged to married to Johnny Vargas, but that never happened and Mari was hurt by Jack Ramirez, a cousin of theirs and thus The Book Of Broken hearts was created. And even though Jude knows deep down in hear hear that she should stay away, when Emilio Vargas is the only one available to help her restore her fathers motorbike she jumps at the opportunity. Because there's one thing you should know, early-onset Alzheimer's disease and Jude believes restoration of the bike, the very one he rode across country with, would be enough to help him hold on to his memories.Keeping Emilio a secret at first seems easy enough, until her older sister Mari comes to stay and then things start to get complicated. Because even though she started of wit the same detest and hatred as her sisters, she's slowly come to see that many she shouldn't have been so quick to judge him. He isn't his brothers just as much as she isn't her sisters.Like I already said, I loved this book. It was well written and thought out, had enough heartache to make you get emotional attached but also had laughter and comedy to lift your spirits. It was such a beautiful book, and Jude's character was just so strong. I loved the banter between Emilio and Jude, I loved the tender moments, I loved the sad moments. I just in turn loved this book. It reminded me so much of a Sarah Dessen book (which made me love it more) and I'm so pleased I read it.

The summer after her senior year, Jude is determined to wrest her father from the grip of early-onset Alzheimer’s by helping him restore his vintage Harley motorcycle—the only thing that he seems to remember vividly from his past. Enter Emilio Vargas, the seriously hot, bad-boy mechanic who just so happens to be the brother of the guy who jilted Jude’s older sister at the altar and the one boy that Jude swore she would never fall for. "The Book of Broken Hearts" is a surprisingly poignant novel about living in the present and trusting yourself while trying to cope with the rapid degeneration of a loved one.

Jude Hernandez is confronting two issues in the summer after graduating high school. Her papi, only 52 years old, is suffering from early onset Alzheimer’s disease and his actions, moods and memory are unpredictable. One day, she uncovered an old motorcycle under tarps in their barn. It was her papi’s and he rode it all over Argentina before moving to the States. In the hope of delaying/reversing El Demonio, they decide to have it restored. Unfortunately, it is Emilio Vargas who is given that chore-the Vargas boys are known for breaking the hearts of Hernandez girls-and Jude is falling for him defying an oath the four sisters took to avoid Vargas’ at all costs. The Book of Broken Hearts by Sarah Ockler is the only YA book I know of that addresses this important issue. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s is the 6th leading cause of death in the U.S. More than 5 million Americans have it. Approximately 4% (200,000) of the above cases are early onset, meaning the person is under 65 years old. By 2025, it is estimated that 7.1 million Americans will have the disease and By 2050 it jumps to 13.8 million. Ockler ably tackles the issues surrounding the disease and the family members who have to deal with a loved one who has Alzheimer’s, such as caregiving (both short term and long term), the progression and unpredictability of the disease, the need for family members to lead their own lives. The romantic spark between Emilio and Jude amid the disapproval of her sisters adds to the story line. The Book of Broken Hearts is a touching story on many levels.

Sarah's writing is lovely, vivid, and altogether real. You *get* Jude from the first two paragraphs:

"The law of probability dictates that with three older sisters, a girl shall inherit at least one pair of cute shorts that actually fit. Agreed?

Bzzz! Thank you for playing! Please try again."

From that first glimpse into her thoughts, Jude is funny, smart, torn, and loving. Her family and situation is unique and always unexpected, and her journey to rebuild the vintage bike whose discovery brought a spark to the eye of her beloved father with Alzheimers is in turns heartwarming and heartbreaking. Full of humor and tension. And Emilio, the boy she's not supposed to love? HEL-LO.

    Loved this book!
