About this audiobook

Small-town librarian Kathleen Paulson never wanted to be the crazy cat lady. But after Owen and Hercules followed her home, she realized her mind wasn't playing tricks on her-her cats have magical abilities.

When the body of elderly do-gooder Agatha Shepherd is found near Kath's favorite local café, she knows Owen's talent for turning invisible and Hercules's ability to walk through walls will give the felines access to clues Kath couldn't get without arousing suspicion. Someone is hiding some dark secrets-and it will take a bit of furtive investigating to catch the cold-hearted killer.

Kathleen Paulson is head of the library in the small town of Mayville Heights, Minnesota. It's winter, and everyone is getting ready for Winterfest. One night after helping her friends Maggie and Roma, when she sees an apparent argument between her elderly friend Harrison Taylor, and retired teacher Agatha Shepard. When Agatha is found dead the next day by another friend, Ruby, Kathleen wonders if Harry's argument with the woman could be relevant. But when she discovers that her friend Eric, who owns the diner, also had an argument and now has taken time off due to illness, her curiosity starts to get the better of her. What's worse, she discovers that Ruby's boyfriend Justin has just been left a boatload of money from Agatha, who barely knew him; and when a young friend is arrested for the murder, Kathleen just can't sit still and allow things to happen. She's warned off the case by Marcus Gordon, the local homicide detective who's also taking a liking to her; but since he recently thought she was guilty of a murder herself, she doesn't much care what he thinks. She's wondering what Harrison and Agatha were arguing about. It has something to do with a missing report card envelope, and since she also saw Eric and Ruby apparently arguing about the same thing, she wants to know if it has anything to do with the murder. She believes if she could find the envelope, she might discover the truth. Helping her are her two cats Owen and Hercules, whom she rescued as kittens from Wisteria Hill, an abandoned estate that is now home to a feral colony of cats cared for by the local veterinarian and volunteers (of which both Marcus and Kathleen are two). What no one except Kathleen knows, though, is that Hercules and Owen are special. Really special. Hercules can walk through solid doors and walls, and Owen can become invisible. They also have an interesting way of being able to help her, and she finally accepts the fact that they want her to investigate - with their help, of course. Kathleen just hopes it won't put her in the sights of a killer...This is the second in the Magical Cat Mysteries and I found it to be just as delightful as the first. Kathleen's wonderful cats are at it again, determined to find out who killed an elderly woman and why, and Kathleen's just along for the ride. Of course, they need her to transport them to where they want to go, and she reluctantly does so, hoping no one will notice her talking to them and thinking she's a crazy cat lady. Her ever-present friends Maggie and Roma, the vet, are also back although they don't play as large a part this time out. I love how Kathleen can take each piece of evidence that's dropped in her lap and (sometimes literally) and match it to what she knows to come to the correct conclusion. I like the fact that not only is she smart in business, being able to run the library smoothly with competent help, she's also able to think on her feet, and this has saved her more than once. And I absolutely love that she knows how to cook. It gets really tiring to read of protagonists who eat fast food all the time, have no idea how to boil an egg, and their refrigerators are constantly empty. I mean, how can you solve murders if you can't even remember to buy food for your pets or a gallon of milk? How can you put together clues if you can't put together a grocery list? Kathleen, fortunately, is the type of woman I think I'd be friends with (since I also love to cook and keep food in the house for my cats). She's also loyal to her friends and they to her. Even though she's only been in Mayville Heights a short time, having moved from Boston (another story), she's managed to forge real relationships that show she actually cares about the people around her. Now if her friends could actually get her to care about Marcus, too...While there were a few red herrings thrown around, and we pretty much knew who the killer was from the beginning, watching her - with her cats' help, of course - is where the real fun is. Nothing is easy for her to discover, but she not only does so, (as we know she will) she also manages to help another friend along the way which only cements the fact that Kathleen will go above and beyond to help those she loves. It's a lovely addition to the tale, and I love how it all turns out. When the ending comes and the killer is revealed, it really isn't a surprise, as I mentioned above, yet I found the climax quite enthralling as once again, Kathleen depended upon her own wits and still managed to put her love for her pets first and foremost in her thoughts. It's heartfelt. It's loving. It's how people who love their pets feel.As you can tell, I was absolutely delighted with this tale and look forward to the next in the series. Highly recommended.

This is the second book in the Magical Cats mystery series, and overall I enjoyed it. The characters are entertaining, and the way the mystery was structured made a certain amount of sense. I would have liked to see a bit more of the cats, but you can't always get everything you want. I already have the third book in the series out from the library, and look forward to reading it.

Unfortunately, the copy-editing and proofreading of this book were both sub-par. This is probably due to the nature of the "serial cozy mystery" genre, which seems to have a focus on quick turnaround times for publication. The text of this book contains a lot of typos, most of the "missing an entire word" sort with a few of the "wrong homonym" variety cropping up here and there. While I know it is nearly impossible to catch all the typos within a manuscript, there is a big difference between missing one or two things and missing twenty or more that even a quick read-through should have caught.

Ultimately the typos did not affect my overall enjoyment of the story, but I think I would have been more disappointed had I purchased the book rather than borrowing it from my local library.

SLEIGHT OF PAW is the second book in Sofie Kelly's A Magical Cats Mystery series starring librarian Kathleen Paulson and her two cats with supernatural abilities. I haven't read the first book, but I was able to jump right into the story without feeling lost. In this book, Kathleen starts investigating the murder of Agatha Shepherd, a former school principal, when her friend Ruby is arrested for the crime. Agatha had always gone out of her way to help troubled kids, including Ruby. Why would anyone, especially Ruby, want to do her harm? Kathleen discovers that Agatha was harboring a big secret that may or may not have something to do with her murder. With a little help from her magically-inclined cats, she sets out to discover the real murderer.

There was plenty that I enjoyed about SLEIGHT OF PAW. One of my favorite parts is the friendship between Kathleen and her pals Maggie and Roma. Together they are a hoot! They had great chemistry and many funny moments between them. There's also a hit of romance between Kathleen and Detective Marcus Gordon. She keeps trying to convince herself she doesn't like him, but there's a spark between them. It will be fun to see where their relationship goes in the next book.

There were a couple of things that could have been improved on. I thought the pacing was slow in spots. There were a couple of chapters that veered off from the mystery investigation that didn't add much to the story as a whole. Also, I loved the cats - both Owen and Hercules had big personalities, but I was hoping their supernatural abilities would be used more. Since this is the "magical cats series," their amazing talents needed more focus.

Overall, I thought SLEIGHT OF PAW was a fun cozy mystery with a delightful cast of characters. I give it 3.75 out of 5 stars!

I received my copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

A cute cozy mystery. Set in Minnesota. I like Roma's statement about how she has chocolate and duct tape - "If I can't fix whatever's wrong with those two things, I'm going home and getting back into bed." I would have liked to have seen more from the cats.

In the second Magical Cats mystery, librarian Kathleen Paulson and her cats adopted from Wisteria Hill, Owen and Hercules, help solve the murder of a teacher who set many children on the right paths over the years. Kathleen's friend Ruby who found the body was arrested, and she and her friends all know Ruby incapable of murder. Although it suffers in the believability department, this series is a fun read for anyone who loves cats and know they all possess "magical powers" of some sort--even if they aren't quite the ones Owen and Hercules have. I listened to the audiobook and found it pleasant for a long drive.

Love this series - love the cats! The plot, though sort of simplistic was a good one and the character development is excellent - you really like the recurring characters in this series. I can't wait for the next one!

I don't know what it is about this series that I love so much. Did the magical cats put me under their spell? I'll never know. Although the plot was easy to figure out and there was the stereotypical damsel in distress ending, I still enjoyed it. I thought the book dragged a bit around 2/3 into it, seemed like filler to me. Overall, a great, fast read and I can't wait to read more.

A beloved retired principal is found dead in an alley, and Kathleen's friend Ruby is suspected of murder. Kathleen knows Ruby wouldn't hurt a mouse, so she investigates, with a little help from her cats. Not quite as good as the first one, but still good.

Another very enjoyable cozy. Great characters, good locale, love the cats. Interesting mystery, just the right difficulty for a cozy. Not sure what makes it so enjoyable, just a very nice mix of ingredients.

In Kelly’s magical mystery, librarian Kathleen lives with two very special, magical cats. When a body is found in an alley, she knows Owen’s talent for turning invisible and Hercules’ ability to walk through closed doors will give them access to clues Kathleen herself can’t access without raising questions around town.Determined to find the murderer of Agatha Shepherd, a retired principal who managed to help almost everyone in town at one time or another, Kathleen sets out to identify a danger that hides his secrets in plain sight. An excellent addition to A Magical Cats Mystery series.

Kathleen is still living in the small Minnesota town when a friend is arrested for the murder of an old lady who seems to have helped everyone in the town at one time or another. Again, she works with her group of friends and with/against Detective Gordon to solve the case. The characters are a bit more fleshed out and Old Harry has a key role. He's well written and steals the scenes! The ending was a bit of a letdown as the foreshadowing was overdone. The two cats, while having a pivotal scene, were even less included. The cats have been reduced in large part to a foil for Kathleen to talk through the case.

I simply loved CURIOSITY THRILLED THE CAT, the first book in the Magical Cats Mystery series, and I was anticipating that the second book would be just as good. Well I was wrong. SLEIGHT OF PAW was even better! SLEIGHT OF PAW sees Kathleen, with her two feline cohorts, trying to solve the murder of Agatha Shepherd, retired school teacher. Agatha Shepherd was a nice person, and couldn't possibly have a enemy if the world so who would've wanted to kill her? It's up to Kathleen to find out! I loved the murder mystery part of this story, mainly because it opened up so many secondary plotlines and the reader learns some back stories on more residents of Mayville. While Kathleen hunts for clues to solve the murder of Agatha, she finds out more about Eric, who runs the cafe, and Old Harry, who is a very fascinating person with an even more interesting past. It all adds up to one fantastic read. My favorite characters in this series is still Owen and Hercules, Kathleen's cats. After reading SLEIGHT OF PAW I will say I'm a bigger fan of them than I was before. You see Hercules and Owen have some magic to them (one can walk through walls and doors and the other can disappear). The mischief they get up to through their magic abilities make the story even better. From one crazy cat lady to another, Kathleen it is okay to be crazy cat lady. While I was reading the story I kept talking to my own kitties and telling them the antics of Owen and Hercules. I give SLEIGHT OF PAW a big high five (or high paw!). If you are a fan of mysteries and cats, you need to be reading this series now!
