About this audiobook

Friendship takes center stage in New York Times bestselling author Nancy Thayer’s captivating, emotionally charged novel featuring all the tenderness and wit, drama and romance, that listeners have come to expect from this insightful, much-loved writer.

When they meet as girls on a beach in Nantucket, Maggie McIntyre and Emily Porter become fast friends—though Emily’s well-heeled mother would prefer that she associate with the upscale daughters of bankers and statesmen rather than the child of a local seamstress. But the two lively, imaginative girls nevertheless spend many golden summers together building castles in the sand, creating magical worlds of their own, and forging grand plans for their future.

Even as Emily falls for Maggie’s brother, Ben, and the young women’s paths diverge, the duo remain close friends. Then the unthinkable happens: a lifelong friendship is pushed to its breaking point with the appearance of the handsome, charismatic, charming, and incredibly sexy Wall Street trader Cameron Chadwick—upending both of their lives.

Struggling with the difficult choices they have made and the secrets they have kept, Maggie and Emily find the road to love and fulfillment is full of bumps and twists, as well as entirely unexpected and quite wonderful turns of the heart. They also learn that while true love may be rare, a true friendship is rarer still.

I always forget how much I like reading books by Nancy Thayer! They should always make a yearly beach read list.

I love all of Nancy Thayers books, but this may be my least favorite to date. It was too cliche and sappy, yet some parts were endearing enough to plow through in one sitting.

predictable plot--a but sappy at times. not a bad read but would have liked to have seen more ambitious less wifey time main characters.

Another friendship pushed to the limits due to outside influences. Thayer does a good job in the characterization of Maggie and Emma and showing how a true friendship is hard to find and should be cherished. It is a light read so if you're looking for something that isn't going to make you think that much but still be entertaining, this will fit the bill.

When they meet as girls on a beach in Nantucket, Maggie Drew and Emma Hudson become fast friends—though Emma’s well-heeled mother would prefer that she associate with the upscale daughters of bankers and statesmen rather than the child of a local seamstress. But the two lively, imaginative girls nevertheless spend many golden summers together building castles in the sand, creating magical worlds of their own, and forging grand plans for their future. As the girls grow up and go their separate ways, Maggie and Emma find the road to love and fulfillment is full of bumps and twists, as well as entirely unexpected and quite wonderful turns of the heart. They also learn that while true love may be rare, a true friendship is rarer still. (Amazon.com description). This book was entertaining, but didn't really grab my interest. The characters were stereotypical and I didn't really care about them or what happened to them. This would be a good book when you're looking for something to read that isn't too mind-taxing.

Normally I find Nancy Thayer's books entertaining, however, this one seem too cliché. Poor girl and rich girl are friends - rich girl loves poor girl's brother but different circumstances keep them apart. Poor girl falls for rich boy, gets pregnant but rich girl marries rich boy and poor girl stays silent. There was no depth to the story.

I really enjoyed this book following the lives of Maggie and Emily from childhood through their late 20s. Some of the twists of the plot seemed a bit far fetched but were written in such a way to make them completely believable. The happy ending was expected but still enjoyable to read.

This your classic rich girl - poor girl story, or maybe rich girl - poor girl, rich boy-poor boy-nerdy boy story with an expected amount of pre-teen friendship between the girls, the crush on poor girl's brother, then romance, sex, distance between the friends as life takes them in different directions, with ultimately a happily ever after finish (except for rich boy). It includes many very nice descriptions of Nantucket Island and notable places and events there which will no doubt be a pleasure for those familiar with the area. What troubled me however was the relative lack of accountability of Emily (rich girl) for her deception that impacted so many lives, including her own. While circumstances explain why she may have behaved the way she did, I am troubled that the author never truly required her to come to grips with this. A privileged, somewhat spoiled child, Emily looks like she will go into the next phase of her life with minimal acknowledgement of how she has impacted so many other lives and choices. But I do not think this is a book about one is supposed to think too deeply, and that is perfectly ok. This is a great light, beach read. Enjoy. Thanks to Library Thing Early Reviewer and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this novel.

This is a wonderfully beautiful romantic story! This got very mixed reviews from Amazon (mostly 4s &5s but a few 3s, 2s, and even 1s) but this book was PERFECT for me! This is just the kind of book I love!Ho-ly crap this book is full of little surprises and a lot of suspense for a romance beach read! This is a story about deep, long lasting friendship, two girls, best friends. One lives on the island, one a summer vacation resident. This is the story of their lives growing up - summer loves and loves lost, growing apart and growing closer, how things change and how they stay the same. And does money really matter - having a lot of it, or the lack of it?This starts out almost like a sweet little fairytale, everything going just right, as sweet as sugar pie. Then... Whoa! the sweet fairytale goes very wrong, I totally didn't see that one coming!I really don't know why but this kind of reminded me of "Sisterhood Of the Traveling Pants" - it just had that feel to me. This book is paced really well. There are some jumps in time - 4 yrs, 6 yrs. 4 yrs, but you don't feel it. You just flow along with it. I thought the time span was done very nicely. The romance parts were also done very well. There were a few sweet awww moments that really just caught my heart in my throat. There are a few medium sex scenes, but nothing too explicit (and some swearing in a few spots). But mostly just a very sweet romantic story. And - of course a GREAT ending! To be honest I bawled my eyes out through the whole last forth of the book. It wasn't all sad, but I even cried at the happy parts thats how connected I was to the characters. Speaking of characters - Oh my goodness, the character development was fantastic.A really wonderful summer romance that will truly warm your heart.Looking for a great Beach read this summer? Well grab this one and head to the beach!Thank you "Librarything Early Reviewers" and "Random House Publishing" for sending me this beautiful book for my honest review!

Having received ‘Nantucket Sisters’ as a LibraryThing Early Reviewer's book, I looked forward to languishing in the beauty of the lovely Nantucket island and to reading about the friendship between two girls who grow up there, meeting each summer when Emily stays at the island with her wealthy parents and reunites with Maggie, a local girl from a poor, working-class family. In the first half of the novel, the author very descriptively moves the story along at a leisurely pace, presenting the contrasting lives of the rich and the working-class who serve the wealthy during their summer visits to the island. Then as Maggie and Emily ready themselves for college, love issues begin to influence their lives, and the story really begins to catapult ahead. It seems that both girls commence on a journey that takes them on separate roads, which eventually lead back to Nantucket and the friendship that they share. Without giving too much away, let me say that being the true optimist that I am, I will always be cheering for a pleasant outcome, and this book did not disappoint me. It is a lovely beach-read about true friendship and undying love.

I received this book as an early reader and received an advanced us corrected proof. The story is about two young girls who meet on Nantucket. One is a native to the island, Maggie, and the other is a girl, Emily, who comes for the summer with her wealthy family. The girls become best of friends and spend all of their summers together as Nantucket Sisters. When the become teens, Emily begins a relationship with Maggie's brother. So not to spoil the story, Emily and Maggie both become pregnant about the same time. This book is a good, summer read. I suggest you read the book to find outs what else the girls gave in common. Good story with some twist.

I am writing this review in exchange for this book. I really enjoyed Nantucket Sisters. I found the characters easy to connect with. The plot had some twists to keep me guessing. I was completely thrilled with the ending and am hoping there will be another book with a continuation of these characters. If you are looking for a lighthearted easy read I recommend this book.

Maggie and Emily are summer best friends. Emily comes from a wealthy family and is a summer inhabitant of Nantucket. Maggie is a year-round islander. Emily's parents don't approve of her friendship with Maggie because she is not of the same economic status. Emily falls in love with Maggie's brother Ben and this complicates life for everybody.I enjoyed Nantucket Sisters even though it is a bit unbelievable in parts. It is a very pleasant read, but not really memorable. I especially loved the Nantucket setting-beautiful!

This is a fantastic book to take to the beach or on a summer road trip. You can almost smell the ocean reading this story! The characters make you laugh, cry and shake your head at the decisions they make sometimes, but isn't that the life of any human being?! I especially loved the ending and how things worked out, if only real life did that sometimes. I definitely recommend picking this one up for your summer read or even a winter read to warm you up and smell the ocean again when the snow is on the ground. Nantucket Sisters by Nancy Thayer is a perfect book for the beach. Thayer can be relied upon to deliver a good story with characters that are relateable and sympathetic. Nantucket Sisters is the story of two somewhat unlikely friends. Maggie McIntyre is a native of Nantucket, daughter of a single mother who works hard to make ends meet. Emily Porter is a New Yorker whose wealthy family has a home on Nantucket where they spend their summers. Despite their differences the girls have formed a fast friendship and eagerly look forward to seeing one other each summer. The story follows them through the years as they grow and mature and as their friendship inevitably goes through its own changes. An easy read with a solid story line.

Having enjoyed other novels by Nancy Thayer, I was really looking forward to receiving this one as an Early Reviewer and not having to wait for it to become available at my library! It was a fun, easy read which I thoroughly enjoyed. The plot was somewhat predictable but in my busy, hectic life I am not really looking for a deep plot with lots of characters and twists to keep up with. The descriptions of Nantucket take your mind on a mini-vacation to the beach. I look forward to Nancy's next work.

This is a terrific beach read. I read the blurb and loved the basic storyline of two girls - one rich, one poor - and a friendship that endured. I thought it sounded a lot like Beaches, but it was still a great story. The book is divided into sections for each part of their lives. The first section is when they were young children, the next section the girls are teens, and so forth. I really liked how Tyler reappeared much later in the book, so he wasn't just a throw-away character. I would LOVE to see a map of Tyler's fantasy land. "Hail, Lord Boulder!"

This is a light beach read as the title "Nantucket Sisters" and the book cover photo promise. I thought the author spent too much of the novel with the characters as young children and then seemed to rush through other more grown-up life stages, for example, when they went to college was completely passed over. I understand she needed to develop the characters but I thought the author stayed too long in their childhood and it dragged a little. Overall, I thought it was a solid story even though it was a little predictable. I did think the author was gifted at describing the beauty of the Nantucket landscape so that was very enjoyable.

Let me begin by saying I really did enjoy this book. It was a fast and easy read. I thought Thayer did a great job with the molding the characters - you really got to know Maggie and Emma and other minor characters in the book. The reason for the 4 stars is this - there were places where she missed details - or a character would find a detail out and she (meaning Thayer) would not act on it or continue that thought. It was very frustrating. So as not to end on a negative note, this was a good book and it would be very fitting to read this novel on the any beach, especially the beaches of Nantucket.

Many thanks to librarything.com for providing the Advanced Uncorrected Proof of Nantucket Sisters by Nancy Thayer in exchange for my honest review. The author has a rare ability to paint vivid pictures with words of Nantucket Island. Her descriptions are so captivating that after reading the novel, I have added Nantucket Island to my vacation wish-list. Unfortunately, the story itself was not as engaging as it's setting. The novel read like a young adult romance novel instead of adult fiction. The third person narration was distracting; the story would have been more effective if written in the first person of one character or alternating chapters of various characters. The characters did not seem to grow and develop as the story progressed. The two main characters, Maggie and Emily, were children when the novel began and their youth and innocence made perfect sense. However, as the girls became older their naïveté seemed unrealistic and misplaced. Their dialogue didn't mature nor did their dreams or insights. I am sure many will find this story to be an easy going beach read, but even light hearted summer novels can tell stories with substance and create fully developed characters. Sadly, I cannot recommend this book.

I won this book through Librarything's Early Reviewers program. I found the story very cute. The characters are Emily, Maggie, Ben, Tyler and Francis. Emily is a young girl of a rich family that visits Nantucket during the summer. Maggie, Ben, Tyler, and Francis are all island people. They live on Nantucket all year.Francis is the mother of Ben and Maggie. She is a single mother that sews clothes for the locals and those that come during the summer. Tyler is Maggie's best friend on the island. Emily and Maggie are best friends too. Your first meet them as they are young girls and call themselves Nantucket Sisters. Emily's family tries to tell her that she should be socializing with her own kind. Emily doesn't understand and enjoys spending time with Maggie and her brother Ben. The years pass and you see them as they grow up. The changes they go through. The friendships change, and possibly end forever. Emily loves Ben and yet will they ever be together forever. Maggie doesn't realize who she loves at first. I loved the story and seeing how the relationships changed throughout time. I look forward to reading more books by Nancy Thayer.

I received Nantucket Sisters by Nancy Thayer in the Library Thing Early Reviewer give away. Had I known the type of fiction Ms. Thayer writes, I would not have requested it. I found it to be unimportant, unappealing, and unengaging. The author uses the present tense throughout the book, which I find wildly distracting. In addition, the word choice is bland and the sentence structure elementary. Although the story line could have allowed the characters to be drawn with depth and complexity, they are superficially pictured. Finally, the love scenes appear to be pasted in at calibrated spots to appeal to those who love such shows of passion but without much conviction for the readiness of the characters to participate in such behavior. I will not read anything else by this author.

I liked this book. It was a quick read and perfect for summer time. I finished the book rather quickly because the story went on at a nice pace and kept you wanting to keep reading. At times I thought it was a bit to much of a happy state and that sometimes the characters could have been a little smarter.

This was a nice, light beach read. The characters came to life on the page and you loved them for both their strengths and their weaknesses. I thought the story line had a nice pace and it was an easy read that kept you turning pages. The story is set in Nantucket and there are two kinds of people who live there. There are the wealthy summer people and the people who live there year round. This story focuses primarily on the latter type but draws on a friendship of two girls that spans their childhood and early adulthood. The only thing that bothered me about this book was that I felt the passage of time sometimes left me surprised. I would be reading and suddenly it would be five years later in the story. It's possible I missed something as I was absorbed with the story and maybe reading too fast...

A beach book that isn't a beach book, since it's locals... but a beautiful setting on Nantucket. It was a nice change of pace to read a book set on Nantucket that talked of something other than the tourist areas. It was well written in an easy to read style, but I felt that the plot line was a bit of a stretch, and a little too pat of an ending for my tastes.Review based on ARC provided by the publisher

This is a typical haves vs have nots -- town vs gown, I could go on with the cliches -- this one being summer people vs year round people. And as the cliche goes, the happy ending comes after tears, feuds. As a beach read it fits the genre well, not to heavy, yet not too light. Typical story, as long as the protagonists are young children everything is fine, but when they grow up the lines become more definite and the frisson ensues. Due to geographical separation lives intertwine more than thought possible, and as all good beach books everything works out in the end.

Nancy Thayer does an excellent job of taking us to Nantucket. The book shows us the divide between socioeconomic statuses and how they impact people's lives. It takes us on a journey of friendship and family. It's a great and fast read would be perfect for the beach!

Nantucket Sisters is a social commentary of a beach community where the year round residents are made to feel like second class citizens by the wealthy Summer people. This tale may center around the friendship of Emily and Maggie but the elephant in the room is the vast difference of the worlds the girls live.Emily and Maggie share their love of Nantucket and wish to preserve the natural beauty of the island. While the girls are young the economic difference does not matter but as the years go by Emily's parent's money and status create a wedge in the girl's friendship.Nancy Thayer is one of my favorite authors and this new novel is definitely my new favorite novel of hers. This book will be one of the top beach reads.

I won this Advance Uncorrected Proof on LibraryThing in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!I really enjoyed this novel by Nancy Thayer. She made me wish I was on Nantucket as much as Elin Hilderbrand does in her novels. This book is about friendship and how it can endure through the years despite things that happen in our personal lives.Fast-paced, romantic, and interesting family relationships make this a novel to take to the beach. It would be a great summer read. The two protagonists are well-developed and there are other strong characters as well. I didn't want to put it down until I was finished. I hope to read more by this author.
