About this audiobook

Mack might be, to all intents and purposes, a normal looking human, but she lives with a pack of shapeshifters in Cornwall in rural England after being dumped there by her mother when she was just a young child. She desperately wants to be accepted by her surrogate family, not least because a lot of them hate her for merely being human, but for some reason her blood just won't allow the transformation to occur. With a terrible temper to match her fiery red hair, Mack is extraordinarily useful in a fight, and when her pack alpha is brutally and abruptly murdered, she swears vengeance. Unfortunately, his murder also draws in the Brethren-the leaders of the shapeshifter world-who will slaughter everyone in Mack's small rural pack if they discover her true identity. Unfortunately Corrigan, the green-eyed muscle-bound Lord Alpha of the Brethren, doesn't let much slip by him...

How should I rate this book? I'd say that the story kept me interested but there were some inconsistencies in the plot not to mention the frustrating blindness of Mackenzie Smith. Nevertheless, I found myself engrossed in the story, reluctant to put it down. I wanted to find out what happened with Mack and where the revelations about her origins would lead her. In spite of its annoying drawbacks, I enjoyed the book. So I ended up giving this book 3 stars and hope that I'll enjoy the next book in the series, Bloodmagic.Regards,Jack Murphy

This may be the first urban fantasy book I've listened to that was set in the UK rather than the US, so of course I enjoyed the sound of the narrator's voice.

I enjoyed the story as well, particularly with the variety of shape shifter types and the fact that Mack's "blood fire" has an interesting origin. The descriptions of the keep and forest were vivid enough that I can still see them in my mind, but the other world through the portal is a complete blank, except for the door to nowhere (which was a funny touch). I can only guess that the other world won't factor much into the next book in the series, since it was so underwhelming.

I definitely appreciated the fact that Mack's pack had a female alpha for a while, but I don't get why the Lord Alpha of the Brethern never caught on to Mack's secret. If the mage knew right away, how could an alpha miss it? (Speaking of the mage, I enjoyed the image of him as a "surfer dude.")

Overall, although I enjoyed the first story, I'm not sure there's enough in this world to draw me back for the second book. Well, maybe my fascination with dragons will be enough :-)

Very interesting story, huge plot twist at the end, made me gasp. Can’t wait to find out more about Mac

I like Mac as a character, the story itself is ok...it has a few glaring holes. Ones that make you think...hang on there, you could so do this. And I'm not talking about decisions with hindsight would fix this, nope big glaring smack your face on the floor type hole.
Anyway I like Mac as a character, strong, bad ass kicking, sassy heroine.
No steamy bits, a maybe love interest, some bad guy kicking action.
But this is mostly a back family story. Hoping the next book will be better.

I actually really liked this book, and I'm wishing I had the rest of the series
9/18 reread I forgot how much I liked this series though I don’t like how clueless Mack is about putting things together

Distinguished from it's genre by variation in world and pack, this book diverges somewhat from the typical path and holds my interests despite some melodrama and slightly jarring plot points.
