About this audiobook

New York Times bestselling author Kay Hooper returns with the new novel in her riveting Bishop/SCU series.

How do you make peace with the dead if the dead aren't ready to forgive? In New York Times bestselling author Kay Hooper's novel, the answer lies in the twisting shadows of a small town, and its secrets yet unearthed…

When Deacon James's younger sister Melanie calls him, terrified, he goes to her aid in the small Georgia town of Sociable. What he finds is a scared young woman in the grip of what she insists is a paranormal nightmare-and murder. Two local men have been killed under mysterious circumstances. And Melanie is the prime suspect.

Trinity Nichols left a high-stress job for quiet, small-town life. But news of the murders has left her-and the town-on edge, especially when there is nothing remotely ordinary about how the men died. And her investigation is yielding more than she bargained for, including a group of strangers who have descended on Sociable, some with abilities Trinity finds hard to believe, and agendas she refuses to trust. For some reason, they know a lot more than they should about what's happening in town. And what's happening is growing stranger by the minute.

This thriller is one of the Bishop/ Special Crimes Unit series. The Special Crimes Unit is a group of FBI agents with paranormal abilities who hunt down the true monsters in this world that the regular cops cannot find or handle. This one is the technically fifth book involving Samuel, a charismatic psychic leader that they fought and killed in the trilogy Blood Dreams, Blood Sins, and Blood Ties, but sort of returns in Haven and now in Hostage, for hopefully the finally time. Bishop, a touch telepath, precog, with extra-sensory abilities is the leader of the group. This book has Hollis Templeton, a medium, healer, and some other interesting abilities that pop up during stressful periods of time. She is constantly evolving and may become one of the strongest members yet. Reese DeMarco, her partner who is ex-military, is an open telepath, able to read a variety of people, can tell if a gun is pointed at him from any direction, and has a double shield that he can use to protect others in his vicinity from psychic attacks. Deacon James is an empath who senses the emotions of others and is the brother of one of the townspeople in this book.In the Blue Ridge Mountains, there is a killer stalking girls and brutally killing them and dumping them. Hollis and Reese are first sent down there to investigate that, but after a month, when a strange killing about a hundred miles away in Sociable, Georgia happens and the sheriff, Trinity Nichols, who knows Bishop, calls him in for this investigation. A man is found with his spinal cord severed at the neck, but no signs of trauma on the body. His apartment is spotless and he is left in a locked bedroom that they easily find a key to. Trinity doesn't tell anyone at first, but she learned about the body from her dog, Braden, a pit bull mix, who has unexplainable abilities and who pulls on her arm while she is driving to lead her to the apartment. The town has a group of thirtysomethings who all hang out together. The first victim was one of them and Deacon's sister Melanie is another one, who also has latent psychic abilities, which she refuses to believe in, but is worried enough to call in her brother. The next killing is much more brutal and the body is found in front of the old church, which it and the parsonage are said to be haunted. So, now there is a serial killer working close by in the mountains and one in Sociable and soon, Hollis realizes Samuel has taken possession of a body of one of the group and is killing off members of it. But his real goal is to get back at Hollis for destroying him and stopping him in Haven. This book, though part of a series, is pretty easy to read without having read all the books, but I do recommend reading the Samuel books first, just to get an idea of who he is, but you don't have to, as a lot is explained in this book. I really love this series. It has many twists and turns and the evil is so dark you cannot wait to discover who it is and how they are hopefully going to destroy it. It's also a joy to read the books with Hollis since she keeps coming up with new abilities every time she goes in the field. The added bonus of a psychic dog was really nice. I cannot recommend these books enough. I have read them more than once over the years and absolutely enjoyed each and every one.

This story starts off well then bogs down. To many characters to keep up with and it's hard to keep track of those names starting with the same letter. To much rehashing of who has what psychic ability and what they did in the past. I lost interest about a fourth of the way through the book..

A serial killer is loose in the mountains and getting to Sociable, Georgia. Trinity is the sheriff and keeping an eye on events in case they get too close. When one of her friends is found dead under odd circumstances, she calls Bishop of the SCU who sends a team to assist. Who is committing all of these murders? What is with the weird negative energies around the old church and parsonage? Is anything really connected?A pleasantly detailed, multi-leveled narrative winds through multiple mysteries with some creepiness, horror, and much flare. Characters are varied, caring, interesting, and fun.Overall, a thrilling read.

Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Pack Alpha - Chelle:*Copy gifted in exchange for an honest reviewHaunted is book 15 of the BISHOP/SPECIAL CRIMES UNIT series and has an incredible premise: A division of the FBI made up of agents and consultants that happens to have preternatural abilities and handle all of these 'extraordinary' cases that the regular Bureau won't take on.In Haunted, small town Sheriff Trinity Nichols is hunting for a serial killer going after members of The Group, people who went to school together, ended up back in Sociable, and still remain friends. Working with SCU Special Agent Hollis Templeton - Medium, S.A Reese DeMarco - Telepath, and SA Deacon James - Empath, along with her extraordinary dog Braden, they strive to catch this psycho who is brutally murdering people of Sociable and leaving behind an interesting calling card. I wanted to love this book. I really, really did. But I just didn't. I can only assume it's because this is my first book of this series and I haven't read and enjoyed the previous 14 installments, thus getting to know (and love I'm sure) the characters and the world. It was well written, the characters were likable (I love Braden!), the mystery was intense and while slow building, left me satisfied, and it was a nicely detailed plot with multiple levels and mysteries with just enough darkness to keep my interest. I just personally didn't feel connected to the leading characters or the story, and once again, can only assume it's because I was just meeting them and trying to get caught up.For fans of the BISHOP series, I think you will love this book. For new readers, if you don't feel like you need a deep connection inducing book, you will probably really like this. It successfully meshes elements of thriller, paranormal, suspense and mystery. Given the way I felt about it though, I would suggest reading the series from the beginning to fully appreciate what the author has produced here. I am a fan of Kay Hooper, and hope that I have a chance to get caught up with the SPU team in the not too distant future.

Haunted: A Bishop/SCU Novel Book #15 by Kay Hooper was a very, very good read. First of all I'm asking myself Kay, where have you been all my life! Why am I asking this, because even thought this is book #15 I read it first. And here's why. First of all, the cover art drew me in. Yes, yes, never judge a book by it's cover but there you have it. The cover was good. Second of all, I see patrons checking out Kay Hooper books all the time, and I needed to know why. Haunted came in and I decided to find out. I know that this might be painful for those who simply must begin with book one, so feel free to avert your eyes. I myself have discovered several wonderful and diverse series by beginning in the middle then going back to book #1 and working my way forward. For Instance Louise Penny and her Inspector Gamache series that takes place in the Marvelous Three Pines. I began with book #5, because I received an advance copy of that wonderful mystery I went to book #1 as soon as I finished my book #5 an I never missed another. Then there is the China Bayles cozy series series that takes place in Pecan Springs, and written by Susan Wittig Albert. YUCK! Too fluffy for me, so no thanks. Then I read book #8.. I went back and have now read through book #21. I will do the with the Bishop. SCU series, I am certain. I have a wee crush on Bishop, even though I haven't really met him, just heard about him in this book. Back to the Kay Hooper series, Specifically Haunted: A Bishop/SCU Novel Book #15 by Kay Hooper. As explained, this is the first I have read in this series. I had no problem understanding what went on before as it is touched on as needed throughout the story. It seems some rather grisly murders have begun taking place in a peaceful mountain area. Very unsettling and unpleasant for the area. Fortunately, Trinity Nichols, the sheriff of the small town called Sociable in Georgia had once worked in Atlanta. She had some very interesting experiences there and because of this and a bit of evidence she found on one of the victims had her immediately turn to Bishop, of the SCU unit of the FBI. It took no time at all for special agents to begin showing up. By special, I mean very special, very talented an very interesting agents. In fact, Trinity was pretty special in her own right, and although the the story was a bit gritty at times, I was sorry to reach the end of this book. By the way. Kay Hooper is an animal advocate and recuer. This is worth mentioning because one of the main characters in this story is a dog. And also anytime someone takes on that worthy challenge, it's worth mentioning.

Kay Hooper never disappoints. I love all the Bishop series and Bishop file books. I have read or listened to them all up to this one. And can't wait to listen to the rest.

I have read almost all of Kay Hooper's work over the years and always found her Bishop series to be almost "hauntingly" perfect. It's been sometime since I read the last one so picked up one I hadn't read before. Maybe it's because it was the 15th book in this series but I found along with the start of a wonderful ghost/murder/mystery there was an unusual amount of background about the abilities of each character and things that had happened in the past. I gave it 4 stars because when the author got around to it...the actual story was still excellent and chilling...not to mention a great added character...Braden...the dog that was a lot more than just a dog.

This is the latest Noah Bishop/SCU thriller, set in a small town in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. A serial killer has been abducting women two at a time, torturing and killing them, and dumping their bodies in the wilderness not too far to the north of town. Then an odd murder in town, and an odder psychical occurrence, has the sheriff calling on Bishop for help. He sends a team ~ Hollis and DeMarco, who are joined by fellow FBI agent Deacon Jones, brother of one of the suspects ~ and things rapidly get even odder and more scary before the special agents can get a handle on what is happening. Pretty good installment, though Hollis's angst and her resistance to acceptance of her abilities, and the resistance of folks who have been aware of the reality of psychic phenomenon to believe what they are seeing, was a little difficult for me to understand. Also, for some reason, I didn't care for Melanie (Deacon's sister), but I really loved the dog and, actually, the sheriff.
