Об этой аудиокниге

"I was, perhaps, the plainest girl in the room that night. I was also the happiest—up to one o'clock. Then my whole world crumbled, or, at least, suffered an eclipse. Why and how, I am about to relate." Thus begins this mystery told by Anna Katharine Green, one of the first writers of detective fiction in America and renowned for writing well plotted, legally accurate stories.(Summary by Annise)

Anna Katharine Green

Anna Katharine Green (1846–1935) was an American writer and prominent figure in the detective genre. Born in New York City, Green developed an affinity for literature at an early age. She studied at Ripley Female College in Vermont and was mentored by poet, Ralph Waldo Emerson. One of Green’s best-known works is The Leavenworth Case, which was published in 1878. It was a critical and commercial success that made her one of the leading voices in literature. Over the course of her career, Green would go on to write nearly 40 books.

The narrator changes and is easier to comprehend at the 7th chapter. Fine mystery although wordy.

The reader has a thick accent. I couldn't enjoy it enough to continue.

I really like Anna's writings. Especially like the detective character Sweetwater she uses from time to time. It's too bad that Libravox uses so many different readers for one book. Some of them are good and some are extremely horrible. When dealing with the latter group I find that I miss important parts of the story, being focused on the sound of the voices and also desperately trying to decipher what is being read through heavy accents.
