Color me surprised. I'm skeptical about reading romance novels by anyone but my usual authors. Especially these days when the romance novels are a far departure from the novels I'm used to reading (from the last 70's, 80's and early 90's). But this book was really good. Well written with a good plot that kept me interested throughout. I'd say that Jodi Thomas has won herself a new fan with this novel.

Jodi Fisher has quickly become my go-to author for Western historicals. Texan Rain is the first book in a series about the McMurray clan, a mixed Irish-Apache family living on a ranch in Texas. Travis is a Ranger chaperoning his sister at a barn dance when he's kissed by a girl who then steals his horse. It's a slow-burn romance as Travis and Rainey chase each other, getting into lots of trouble along the way. I really liked both of them and how they worked together to build their relationship and also escape the bad guys. There's a wonderful cast of supporting characters who I suspect we'll meet again in later books. A great start to this series.

The main romantic plot is great and worth reading. The writing is solid, the characters are layered, but the subplots just aren't that interesting. Specifically, the subplots are snoozers. I skimmed A LOT of stuff that was just happening. It felt to me like the author padded a good romantic plot with a bunch of stuff because she had to make her word count, but if she'd cut all the subplots about pies and whores and kooky boarding house customers, the story would have made a fantastic novella. My favorite part was the section where the hero and heroine open up to each other through letters, writing personal things they never would have said out loud to each other in person.
