      The diary of Jakob Walter shows absolutely why no one would want to be a foot soldier in Napoleon's army. Most of the time, at least from reading the diary, food was obtained by foraging, medical treatment was primitive and survival was problematic.Of the three campaigns written about, the Moscow campaign stands out. The retreat in bitter cold with Cossacks attacking and killing daily ensured that relatively few survived and those mostly by chance.The diaries are succinct and well enough written. They are a true piece of history. I recommend them especially to anyone interested in military history.
