This particular book in this series concentrated far more on the food and excuses to show recipes than it did on the mystery. It was as if the mystery was an after-thought.

Seems that Delores is having a hard time saying yes to the plans!To add to this, while Hannah is driving on a winding road in a blinding thunder storm, she accidentley hits a stranger. She feels bad enough that he is dead, but things turn from worse to worse when she is arrested for murder. (yes, I typed worse to worse because it did) Mike is given the job of arresting Hannah but refuses and winds up being fired from the department.The autopsy shows that the man did die on impact, but there is no way to identify him. All there us to go on is his height, weight and a diamond set in one of the man's teeth.Then there are the questions of why the man was on this road in the countryside in such a bad storm, without any jacket and how did he get there?With her usual team of helpmates, Hannah is on the hunt to solve this mystery.By the way, plans do work out for Delores' wedding with help from an unexpected source!
My mom got this book from a lady who brought a bunch of them to the library to give away. I've read others in this series previous to this one, but I don't usually read them in order. I liked this book, except for the ending. My favorite part was the cat on the treadmill. I did not put all the pieces together until very close to when the author revealed who did it. I felt though, that since Hannah's guilt seemed to be the main part of the story at the beginning of this book, that it shouldn't have been left up in the air at the end of the book.
I have been reading this series for a few years now. They are quick easy reads, but it is hard to wait for the books to come out.
I have been reading this series as each new book comes along. The earlier books in the series seemed much more organized and focused on the storyline, rather than details about the characters' lives, decor, and so on. I am wondering if there are ghost writers now writing the books. The storyline was really thin, and there is a lot of detail that seemed totally unnecessary. I still like the characters, but the plots seem to be going downhill from the earlier books. I do not like cliffhanger endings that force the reader to read the next book in the series, and this book had such an ending. Much of the book is taken up with recipes too, and the characters seem to spend an inordinate amount of time eating. The wrap up and apprehension of the criminal seemed really beyond belief, rather like something from a Three Stooges or slapstick movie. But. . .I will keep reading the series. . .This was an audiobook, so it was interesting to hear the reader change voices for the different characters. She did a great job!
Even reading this one out of order, it was fun. I had already read the next book, so it was interesting to see what had lead up to those events. Sometimes, I can get very tired of Hannah's indecision about her boyfriends, but this story, which centered on her mother's inability to make up her mind presented an interesting twist. If you're a fan of the series, this is a good one. If you're not up to date in the series, get caught up before tackling this one.
I really used to enjoy these books. I have to say that the problem could be that I listened to the audiobook. This is the first time that I noticed how condescending some of the explanation is. A character will say something very poetic and metaphorical and then it is ruined by an explanation of what the character means. Another annoyance was again of the metaphor variety. Hannah uses a roller coaster analogy that gets carried on through an entire chapter, which would have been fine had it not been explained almost every time. I will read the next in the series because I still enjoyed the story, but I will give the audio a wide berth from now on.
Hannah Swensen is up to her elbows in wedding plans . . . Delores and Doc are getting married in less than a month. And Delores keeps changing her mind about what she wants for the wedding and the reception. But Hannah’s wedding planning problems pale when, during a terrific thunderstorm, she hits a stranger with her cookie truck. Hannah’s filled with guilt . . . and arrested for vehicular homicide.In this seventeenth outing for the Eden Lake gang, all the expected characters are in place. And while Hannah hasn’t yet made a choice between Norman and Mike, at least she’s considering what she should do and both gentlemen are acting gentlemanly. And readers will be happy to find that Hannah has abandoned both the condescending attitude and her annoying Grammar-Nazi behavior. The result is a wonderful, straightforward mystery filled with lots of cookie-baking and some amateur sleuthing. Readers will discover a few unexpected twists and there are a couple of surprises in store for them as the story unfolds. Hannah and company spend a great deal of time eating and there’s lots of coffee drinking [no derision intended . . . Hannah’s coffee-drinking is one of her more endearing qualities], but it all fits together nicely with the telling of the tale. As always, there are many recipes for readers to test, all conveniently located at the end of the chapters. [Sadly, however, there isn’t a recipe for Chocolate-Covered Cherry Cookies, the first cookie mentioned in the story.]The murder mystery ends with a cliffhanger [tied to the accident]; readers will be eagerly awaiting the next installment in the cozy mystery series. Recommended.
I am a new reader to this series and find it to be light and entertaining. I enjoy the added recipes provided at the end of many chapters. The characters are engaging and humorous.
Hannah's partner Lisa had her car in the shop, so when Hannah picks her up on a rainy morning an accident gets Hannah into a pot of trouble. Arrested for Vehicular homicide, Hannah works from jail trying to figure out the identity of the victim and what he was doing on a deserted road.Okay, these aren't rocket science but for me they are loads of fun. The characters make me laugh and the recipes make my mouth water.
I must read the next in the series! I need to know what happens to Hannah. I have become too invested in the Swensen family. Love the the cozy mystery series genre. Light, fun, and humorous characters. Murder is secondary to the story of the Swensen family.
Hannah ends up in jail when she hits a man with her vehicle on a rainy day. No one seems to know who the man is. Mike is suspended by Bill for refusing to arrest Hannah. Because she was arrested at the beginning of a weekend, she has to stay in jail until Monday when the first hearing will be held. Hannah begins the investigation into the man's identity from her jail cell while she's awaiting the hearing. In the meantime, Hannah's mom Delores is constantly changing her mind regarding things related to her upcoming wedding to Doc. While it's an enjoyable installment in the series, there's a little too much stuff not resolved at the end for me. Persons who have not read earlier installments in the series will likely want to read a few before beginning this one just to be able to sort characters. As usual, there are quite a few recipes, particularly for cookies and desserts that will appeal to readers, if they can get through the commentary. I often wish that the recipes were provided without the commentary at some spot in the book so readers who don't keep the books permanently don't have so many pages to copy if they want a recipe. An advance e-galley of the book was received by the publisher through NetGalley with the expectation that a review would be written.
Sadly, Joanne Fluke's Hannah Swensen series has gone completely downhill. The writing in this book is so bad that I can hardly believe the same person is writing. Hannah's double boyfriend situation has gone from ridiculous to unbelievable to perverse. It actually makes me intensely dislike Hannah. The plot here was non-existent and Fluke's handling of Hannah's moral crisis was poorly done. The extensive treatise on baseball was bizarre and her use of it during the big confrontation made a parody of the main characters. In sum, she needs to end the series.
Blackberry Pie Murder has all of the usual and fun elements of this series, but this time it is Hannah who is in trouble with the law. During a downpour, she hits and kills a man. Charged with vehicular homicide and looking at jail time, she searches for the man's identity. While I enjoyed reading the story, the non-ending was a major let-down.
Well, the most annoying romantic trilogy in a mystery was downplayed a bit in this story, but the mystery itself was fairly transparent. Hannah winds up arrested after hitting a man during a rainstorm and the plot just meanders to one unbelievable episode after another. It's a fine diversion if you are ok with just being satisfied with the new recipes (they always sound yummy), but not the best of mysteries this time around.
I just can't get enough of Hannah and her quirky friends. A couple of times I had to laugh out loud. This time Hannah is in trouble. She's been arrested for murder and now that she's out of jail she has to figure what really happened. Mix in trying to plan her mother's wedding, with her mother constantly changing her mind over what she wants as the wedding theme, and you have a fun read.
2.5 stars. This was a solid 3 right up until the last page. Then it just abruptly ended. I thought there was still 20 pages to go, but it was just the last set of recipes and an intro to her book being republished. I was left feeling completely gipped.
I thought I'd given up on this series after the last book, but I decided to give another book a try. This series was very enjoyable in the earlier books, but it has been going downhill for awhile now. I didn't dislike this particular book as much as I did The Red Velvet Cupcake Murder, but it was very hurried and the storyline didn't develop very well. The characters were still enjoyable though. I always liked Hannah and her friends, but she still hasn't made up her mind between her two suitors, and they are both still hanging around waiting for her to decide. That really does push this series beyond belief. In this book, Hannah finds herself on the wrong side of the law and she has to rely on her friends and her family to help her through. As usual, her baking helps her cope as well. The ending paves the way for the next book as Hannah's problems are not resolved this time. I guess I'll continue with the series as I still want to know what will happen to the characters in the book.

Gathering recipes along the way, Hannah continues her sleuthing. In the meantime, her mother continually changes her mind one everything to do with her upcoming nuptials to, well, I won’t say since if you’re doing this series on order, you don’t want to know.
The good news: it looks like Hannah is finally going to make up her mind to make the correct choice on whom to marry. There are significant differences in this tale as compared with the other two I listened to, and it ends on a cliffhanger because Hannah still hasn’t had her day in court.
This is the best of the three Hannah Swenson books I’ve listened to, even though I only chose it for a challenge where I needed a book with fruit or vegetables on the cover and I could listen to this while driving.
