Cute, very cute. Set in San Francisco. A funny cat and a gorgeous house. And that's about it.
Willa and Keane both have issues with commitment. Keane walks in on Willa when she's knee deep in doggie doo - literally! She also seems pissed with him for some reason that he can't comprehend (typical guy!) since they just met. Willa is pissed off because they had met before - and not only doesn't he remember it, he doesn't even remember her!
Soon they have sparks flying but will that be enough or will their past get in the way?
Read if you like some steam and Christmas. It wasn't my favorite of Ms. Shalvis but it is enjoyable, maybe a little too long for me right now, I wanted something quick to read so I'll give this one another read next Christmas.

Sweet story but not the author's best (IMHO). I found the resolution a little too quick and easy compared to the drawn-out drama of the Lie By Omission. Great characters as always!
Shalvis begins another series with her trademark blend of steam and humor. This one had all the elements I truly enjoy. The main characters were good people doing what they could to get along and help others. There was a sense of family. And of course, the small town with quirky people. I can't wait for the rest of this series.
I don’t like the reader and I didn’t like Willa.
This is such a great story! I haven't read a lot of books written by Jill Shalvis yet but everyone that I have picked up so far has been really good. This series is the second book in the Heartbreaker Bay series but it would be great as a stand alone novel. This was one of those books that just put a smile on my face while I was reading it because the story was just delightful.One of the things that I really love about this series is the wonderful cast of characters. This book features Willa and Keane. Willa owns the local pet story which added to the charm of the book for me since I just love a dose of animals in any book. Keane is in real estate and construction and Willa considers him to be completely off limits due to a past that he doesn't even remember. She still just can't say no when he comes to her for help with his aunt's cat.I loved Willa and Keane as a couple. I liked that instead of keeping secrets throughout the book this pair actually talked about things. There were a few things that they both needed to figure out but most of the issues dealt with what they each wanted in their own life. I liked the chemistry between the pair and thought that they just seemed to match up perfectly.I thought that this story had a really nice flow to it. There were some parts of the book that were serious and others that were more silly than anything else but it all worked together perfectly. The Christmas part of the story was really fairly small. There is some talk of decorations and Santa but nothing too over the top which is perfect for me. The touch of humor in the story was very well done as well.I would recommend this book to fans of contemporary romance. This is a sweet and fun story filled with great characters. I am becoming quite the fan of Jill Shalvis and can't wait to see what will happen next in Heartbreaker Bay!I received an advance reader edition of this book from Avon Books via Edelweiss for the purpose of providing an honest review.

Willa is a product of the foster care system, a throwaway child who takes in strays so that they don't have to live the way she did. She's a champion of the underdog and she always has your back. When the boy who stood her up for the Sadie Hawkins dance in high school shows up at her pet store, old hurts are resurrected, and magnified when he doesn't remember Willa.
From the outside, Keane had a more traditional upbringing, although as the "extra" kid in his family, he acted out to garner the love and attention he was lacking. As such, he has an innate fear of attachment-to a home, to people. Except, like Willa, he tends to take care of the people around him, even the ones who have let him down.
In typical Shalvis fashion, the chemistry between these two is off the charts and they have to find a way to like each other, in spite of past hurts, in spite of their emotional baggage.
When I pick up a Jill Shalvis book, I always end up reading it through start to finish. Full of wit and steam, angst and the discovery of love, her writing style is fun and fluid. Why isn't this one five stars? She's venturing into more kink with this series, which I don't think is needed. Even though it's barely there, I'm not sure it needs to be there at all. I also had some trouble with Willa's characterization. She takes in strays, and Keane fits that mold, so her "I love him, I love him not" vacillating grew a little tiresome. Willa is shown to trust people, even when she probably shouldn't, so her struggle to trust Keane was a stretch. These are minor hiccups overall - I still loved the story and set against the backdrop of San Francisco, the author has captured the facets of the city beautifully.

Terrific second book in the Heartbreaker Bay series. This one is about Willa, the pet shop owner and animal wrangler and Keane, flipper of houses and desperate cat sitter. Willa isn't too thrilled when Keane shows up at her shop, looking for some kitty daycare. She remembers Keane from high school, when he stood her up for a school dance, and still holds something of a grudge. But she can't refuse to help the cat, and the man is part of the package. Keane has been stuck with taking care of his great-aunt's cat, Petunia, and it isn't going well. Leaving her with Willa seems the best way to keep from having his house destroyed. If only he could figure out why she doesn't like him...Willa is a sometimes sweet, sometimes sassy woman with a huge heart. Willa was in and out of foster homes for most of her childhood, leaving her craving love and family, but also cautious about committing her whole heart. She wants a love of her own, and the historic fountain in the building's courtyard gets a lot of her change as she makes her wishes. She's also on a man diet right now, as her past relationships seem to have all been losers. Instead, she lavishes her attention on her animal customers, her friends, and the young women who work for her.Keane is a good looking man with a busy life. He's a self-made man, making his living by flipping houses. A late-in-life arrival to his parents, he feels that he never really fit in with his family. His childhood attempts to gain attention have led him to believe that he doesn't have the ability to love or be loved.I loved the relationship that grew between Willa and Keane. His arrival at the shop, with bejeweled cat carrier in hand and desperation in his eyes, was pretty amusing. Their conversation was fun, with some definite sparks present. Keane is attracted and intrigued, and can't get her out of his mind over the next few days. Willa is just as attracted, but determined to resist. Over the next few days they slowly became friends. I loved the scene where Keane helped with the dog wedding setup and encountered Archer and Spencer, and held his own with them. Willa fills Keane in on what her problem with him is, and he is suitably apologetic. He has matured into a much better man than his teenaged self, which puts Willa at even more risk.I loved seeing them grow closer. They have more in common than they realize, with their rocky childhoods. This gives them insight into what makes the other tick even though they can't see the truth about themselves. I especially enjoyed seeing Keane, who really believes that he can't care about anyone, show just how much he does. His care for his aunt, who he barely knows, and her cat, who gives him fits, is one of the sweetest things about him. The friendship between Keane and Willa is quickly enhanced by the attraction that continues to grow between them. The realization that what they want is more than the casual relationship that they started out with freaks both of them out, and each reacts in a different way. I ached for Willa as she discovered just what Keane had done, the hurt that she felt believing that love would be enough to overcome their issues. Keane's stunned realization of just how much he cares comes just a little too late, and he is left trying to figure out how to fix it. Meanwhile, in a conversation with Rory, Willa realizes that she has made her own mistakes. I loved seeing the help and support she got from her friends as she raced back to Keane. The ending was so sweet and romantic as both finally open their hearts all the way. The epilogue was great, and I adored the gifts that they had for each other.I loved seeing more of the group of friends. The love, friendship and support they all share is something that makes these books such incredible reads. I really loved seeing Archer, Spence and Keane all come together to deal with Willa's ex. The young women who work for Willa were also wonderful characters and showed another facet of Willa's big heart, as she helped them through the same issues she had had to deal with.My favorite secondary character of the book was the cat, Petunia, aka PITA. It was so much fun to see her go from devil's spawn to beloved pet. I really had to laugh at her ways of getting Keane's attention, from cat yak by the bed for him to step in to using his running shoes as a litter box. I loved seeing Keane's various reactions to Willa's abilities as a cat whisperer. Petunia made a grand matchmaker as her antics frequently brought the two of them together.

That is how I feel waiting for the next Jill Shalvis book to come out. I don’t have to rattle or weigh or try to figure out if I will like what has been written because so far I have always been more than satisfied…and that is true of this book, too.Jill has created a family of friends working and living in San Francisco centered around the fictional Pacific Pier Building that has a central courtyard with a magic wish fulfilling fountain, provides living and business spaces for all of the main characters and is a charming setting for this series. I am looking forward to finding out how each one of these wonderful friends finds their happily ever after. Willa Davis has been through the foster system and when spit out at the end became a woman that helped others. She took in strays – both animal and human, gave freely of herself to improve what she could, hired women who had gone through the system as she had and created her own successful business – South Bark Mutt Shop. One morning a knock at the door before opening time put Keane Winters back into her life again. He needs daycare for his aunt’s Persian cat. She remembers him from high school and her memories are not positive. He has no idea who she is or why she is so negative toward him. Over time, as she cares for the cat in her shop on an as needed basis, they begin to talk and get to know one another forming a friendship of sorts…one that leads to potential romance. BUT both Willa and Keane have had less than perfect childhoods and have issues with love and the idea of forever. They are attracted to one another but Willa worries that the more time she spends with Keane the more of her heart will be given away and since Keane says he is not the type to ever form attachments this is a big worry. I loved Willa and Keane as people, friends and lovers. They were caring, shared, were open and honest. I loved their interactions in and out of the bedroom. I admired them as people and felt their relationship made both of them stronger individuals. I also enjoyed meeting the gang of friends that are part of this series and look forward to book three in the series wondering just who will get their HEA next.NOTE: If you have ever had a cat then you will definitely be able to relate to the one in this book. Petunia is an interesting addition to the story…as are the other animals that make appearances. Thank you to the author for the copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.5 Stars
