About this audiobook

New York Times bestselling author Jill Shalvis returns to Heartbreaker Bay with a fun and festive holiday novella!

It’s Christmas Eve and Rory Andrews is desperate to get home to the family she hasn’t seen in years. Problem is, her only ride to Lake Tahoe comes in the form of the annoyingly handsome Max Stranton, and his big, goofy, lovable dog Carl.

Hours stuck in a truck with the dead sexy Max sounds like a fate worse than death (not), but Rory’s out of options. She’s had a crush on Max since high school and she knows he’s attracted to her, too. But they have history… and Max is the only one who knows why it went south.

They’ve done a good job of ignoring their chemistry so far, but a long road trip in a massive blizzard might be just what they need to face their past… and one steamy, snowy night is all it takes to bring Max and Rory together at last.

Sweet quick story on stormy Christmas eve, two soul mates coming together

Not a fan. The whole bad blood between them was over him getting mad at her in high school for something he did of his own volition. And partly because of a father that wasn't even hers getting petty revenge. And he blamed her and she actually felt bad about it. WTF? Just no. It made her look pathetic and him look like a jerk who couldn't take responsibility for his own actions and/or put part of the blame on the coach who was being petty. I can't with this one. I had to stop listening. I tried to push past it for a little bit after finding out the reason for his issues with her but I just couldn't. It was just too ridiculous.

This was exactly as you would expect from the description and the cover. Romance blossoming at Christmas in a novella. And a dog and winter storm to run interference.

Short, sweet, and a little bit sexy, this is the story of Rory and Max. Rory works for Willa (see The Trouble with Mistletoe), who rescued Rory from a bad situation. She has made a good life for herself in San Francisco, but the things she did as a teenager dampen her pride in who she is now. She was the target of a witch of a girl in high school and still ended up being the one in trouble when she fought back. She ran away from home at seventeen and hasn't been back since. Now Rory has finally gathered the courage to go home for Christmas, and her only way to get there is to ride with Max - her high school crush.Max knew Rory in high school but has resented her for something she did that threw his plans into turmoil. Now he works for a security firm in the same building. He has a crush on her that is unaffected by their past. He uses his dog Carl as a bridge and takes him to the groomer's shop every week so that he can see Rory. He leaps at the chance to give Rory a ride home for Christmas.I liked seeing the relationship between Rory and Max. The beginning of the trip is really awkward, with Max still carrying a grudge over what happened in high school, and Rory feeling the tension but not knowing why. Plus, she still has this overpowering attraction to him. Though normally the trip to Tahoe is pretty short, the weather has turned nasty and progress is slow. Trapped in the truck together, along with lovable dog Carl, Rory and Max finally have a chance to clear the air between them. Both of them discover that there was more to the story of what happened, which changes the way they look at each other. It was fun to see them each dance around their attraction to each other until they had to take refuge in a motel for the night. I loved seeing Rory take matters into her own hands. It was also sweet to see Max hold off until he was sure that it was what Rory wanted. The heat between them was really intense, and I loved how it brought them even closer together.I ached for Rory and her nervousness about going home. She was especially nervous because they had been delayed. I wanted to smack her stepfather at first because of his attitude toward her. It was awesome to see Max's protective side come out and show how great she was. He also stepped up and told her how he felt, which helped Rory admit her own feelings. I would have liked a little more of the reunion, but overall it was okay. I hope that we get to see more of Max and Rory in later books.

Rory needs a ride home on Christmas Eve and Max offers to take since they're both from the same town. Snowy road, a dead battery, and other mishaps ensure they'll end up in a motel for the night. I usually like Jill Shalvis, but this novella just wasn't that good, at least for me. Max is kind of a jerk, kissing another woman goodbye while blaming Rory for a past incident in his life. He's still attracted to her physically though he won't talk for the first few hours of their ride. By the end of the ride, he's done a complete and unbelievable turnaround, almost completely based on something his sister told him to do. Rory's more likable and her character is more consistent; she's liked Max since high school and still likes him. She's kind of a doormat with him though; she can be feisty when he orders her around, but the minute he indicates any sort of attraction or liking, she folds like a wet noodle. I did like the dog, but he didn't make up for the rest of the story.

This may be my first time reading Jill Shalvis, but it’s not going to be my last. Though, a little on the short side (there are some previews , as to be expected with an ebook novella, in the back of the book), I feel that Shalvis gave me a good taste of her writing and brought me into Heartbreaker Bay enough to make me want to visit it again.

The story had everything I wanted from this romance trope. I really enjoyed the characters, especially Rory. Her character was almost too much to be contained in this short format, but I think it worked in the end. I liked Max too. And without his dog Carl, well, who would want a story without a lovable dog?

Again, it may have been a little short. And because of that some aspects of the story may have felt a little rushed. Overall, though, I feel like this was the enjoyable holiday read I was expecting. I am holding out hope that Rory and Max get a book of their own, or even just another novella. I’d really like to see the rest of their Christmas and young relationship.

This is book 2.5 in Heartbreaker Bay Series and once more I find myself enjoying Jill Shalvis's book less because I've not read the other two books first. I have no doubt that I'd have enjoyed it much more if I had a chance to connect with the people populating this series.

Despite fully connecting with an already established community and family dynamics, I thought the story well written and fast paced, but most enjoyable were the characters of Max and Rory. They entertained me from start to finish and on that merit alone, I recommend it.

This a perfect read for all of you that are stuck this weekend in your "huts" as the snow hits our Midwest. Grab a cup of hot chocolate and enjoy!

This tale is like cotton candy – sweet but without any substance. Before you finish the first chapter, you know exactly how it is going to end. But it’s a Christmas story with a happy ending, and it has a big lovable dog to boot. In fact, the dog is probably the best thing about the story. The novella is short, less than a hundred pages, and most of it takes place on a snowy road at night. I think everyone, characters and readers alike, are glad when that journey is over.

I really enjoyed this novella. The Heartbreaker Bay series has been just wonderful so far and this story features a couple of characters that we have met in previous books. The story is short but there really is a whole lot going on between these characters. It was really nice to watch Max and Rory open up with each other and begin there new relationship. It is Christmas Eve and Rory wants to go home to visit family for the first time in a number of years. Max grew up in the same town as Rory so he volunteers to give her a ride. They have a lot of chemistry but they also have some history standing in their way. As Max, Rory, and Max's dog, Carl make their way home for the holiday, they run into some bad weather that changes their plans.I liked Max and Rory together. They both have some issues from their interconnected past that have affected their lives. I liked how open they were with each other and really let the truth come out. It turns out that things were not exactly what they seemed. They have strong attraction to each other that really was hard to ignore. Now that everything is out on the table, there is nothing stopping them from getting the happily ever after they both deserve.I would recommend this novella to fans of contemporary romance. This novella is part of the Heartbreaker Bay series and while it could be read as a stand alone, I think that fans of the series will get the most enjoyment from this story. I can't wait to see what happens next in this series.I received an advance reader edition of this book from Avon Books via Edelweiss.

Heartbreaker Bay is filled with characters I would love to have as friends AND finding out more about Rory and Max was a perfect way for me to spend the evening last night. Carl, Max’s Doberman, added to the fun in more ways than one. There is history between Rory and Max that creates tension between them and the original cause is explored as they make their way to Tahoe from San Francisco. What they learn is an eye opener for both of them and opens the door for them to explore the possibilities of a potential relationship between them. I loved reading this sweet short story and look forward to reading more in the series soon. Having met both of the characters before and having wanted to know more about them made this a timely holiday story to read before moving on To Elle and Archer’s story that is coming out in January 2017. There were introductory chapters from books 1, 2 and 3 of the series to give readers more of an idea about this wonderful series. Thank you to Edelweiss-abovethetreeline and Avon Impulse for the copy of this ARC. This is my honest review.

One Snowy Night by Jill Shalvis is a 2016 Avon Impulse publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher and Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. This Christmas novella features Rory, a character we have met in another installment of this series. After going through a pretty tough time at home and at school, Rory runs away from home, only to find life can be brutal out there on the streets. Thankfully, Willa rescued Rory, but this Christmas, Rory is determined to make it back home to her family in time for Christmas. But, the only way she can get there is by hitching a ride with her old high school crush, Max, and his dog, Carl. This is a cute story with a tiny bit of ‘enemies to lovers ‘and ‘second chance love’ rolled in together. There are a few laugh out loud moments and of course, as with most holiday themed stories, there is a little tug on the heartstrings, too. I thought the characters showed real progress and proves that old adage about two sides to every story is true. Although things were tidied up in a huge rush, the story will make a nice addition to your holiday reading, plus you get to find out how Rory and Max got together. Overall, this one is short, but sweet, and fans of the series will not want to miss this holiday bonus read.
