About this audiobook

The saga of the Imager Quaeryt, commander in the forces of Lord Bhayar, reaches a new climax as the great struggle to unify the continent of Lydar enters its final phase. Only the land of Khel remains uncommitted to Bhayar's rule. Their decision could mean a lasting peace, or more conflict across an already war-ravaged realm.

While the conqueror of Bovaria awaits emissaries to arrive with news of Khel's decision, other weighty matters occupy Bhayar, his sister Velora, and her husband Quaeryt-not the least of which is the fulfillment of Quaeryt's dream to create the world's first Imager academy, where the magical abilities of these powerful casters may be honed, managed, and put to the service of the common good.

But before that dream may be realized, or Khel's fateful choice made known, the spectre of high treason threatens to unravel all that Quaeryt has achieved, catapulting him toward a fateful confrontation with Bhayar's most powerful military leaders.

Modesitt loves to tell us what everyone has to eat.
The end of the Imager series dribbles to a close. Actually, I shouldn't be so harsh. It's just that nothing is much of a surprise anymore. We've identified all the villains long ago, it's just the method of their villainy.
It's a solid end to a solid series.

This is the last book in this series of 5 of the Imager series. The final notes of how the entire continent was conquered and made safe for Imagers to live and flourish.Once more we see the formula that Modesitt has employed and we are heartily glad that this end over 3000 pages of material that might have been told in 1000. Repetition has not done much for the success of this series. School taught us that we need to mention a thing 3 times for it to stick, not a dozen times.Yet, we are happy to finish with this travelogue. There are many unanswered questions and here more than otherwise, a supernatural element inflicts itself causing us to be sure that legends come about and grow. The author is a master at his craft, but an outside editor discussing the cons of developing a series this way might have aided. Recluce, a series where Modesitt shows us many different ages and elements has stood the tests of time. Sometimes it is not new information we see, but other times it is. Here this series was vastly different than the first trilogy of the Portfolio, but it lasted far too long. The developments that could have made it unique, gone. Instead the last 3 and a half books was all the same.

A pretty good wrap up to the series, but 5 books was a bit many for this particular character. He had a lot to do with very limited resources & murky problems. Very realistic issues that went well with the theme of hard work making for good fortune. In 5 books, this point became repetitive. Then Modesitt took him in a direction I didn't care for. I didn't care for the addition of Erion, the god, appearing in the previous book & far less in this one. The character handles it well & there is quite a bit of doubt as to the reality. It might just be a subconscious manifestation. Still, that doesn't add anything & it would have been a stronger story without that.

All in all, a 4 star series & highly recommended like all his books.
