A decent read but Davis is certainly the queen of adjectives when it comes to describing ingredients. Almost every item is exceptional in some way such as crisp.
For the first time, Sophie's family is celebrating Christmas at the home of her brother George, his wife Laci, and their daughter Jen. But when Sophie, Wolf and Hannah arrive at the suburban home on Christmas Eve, there are police cruisers with flashing lights on the street and people milling about on the lawns.It turns out that somebody has stolen all the Christmas presents out from underneath the Christmas trees in the neighbourhood homes. Since it's obvious that the thief won't be found overnight, Sophie and her family organize a toy drive so the kids can have something to open on Christmas morning.The next day, Laci's father Forrest (who has been separated from his wife for only a few months) arrives at the party with a woman named Bonnie, who happens to be a professional acquaintance of Sophie's and the mother of Shawna's (Laci's sister) boyfriend.At a Boxing Day dinner hosted by Bonnie, ostensibly to announce Shawna and Beau's engagement, Bonnie instead announces a surprise of her own. That evening, whenSophie goes to Bonnie's home for a scheduled meeting, she finds Bonnie's body.Certain that someone in Laci's family will be accused of the crime, and with Wolf away visiting family, Sophie is forced to investigate on her own.A fantastic stay-up-all-night read. This series just keeps getting better!
A very good addition to a strong series. I didn't see the whodunit at all, which is always fun. This has been an enjoyable series. I wouldn't call it one of my favorites - one of the ones I'm eagerly counting down the days until it's release, but I'm always pleased when a new book in this series is published because I know it will be an enjoyable read.
Christmas is here and Sophie and her family are celebrating as usual. However, things keep going wrong. First, all the gifts and Christmas food is stolen from her brothers neighborhood while everyone is at a Christmas pageant. Then Sophie finds the body of the local organizing queen. When her sister-in-law's sister is arrested for the murder (long story), Sophie is yet again drawn into a murder investigation.These books are so much fun. Sophie is determined to keep the Christmas spirit despite all the mayhem. And she actually does a pretty good job even though her boyfriend Wolf is away visiting family and her family and extended family constantly call on her for support. I feel like I know Sophie and wish she was my next door neighbor. This mystery was particularly good and kept me guessing almost to the end. I will definitely read the next in the series.
Another fun cozy featuring the Domestic Diva. Sophie is on the trail of a big ol' Grinch and she has a cast of plenty to choose from. That's my only distraction with this series, there are an awful lot of characters to keep track of and I have to go back and figure out who's who to who sometimes. Otherwise, I enjoy the heck out of the mystery and the domestic tips. Even Natasha, Sophie's Diva rival, has some interesting ones to offer this go 'round. She seems to have mellowed somewhat since the first book, but she's still a pain in the tookus. And has incredibly bad taste as in pink and teal are the new red and green! *shudder* Sophie also doesn't have Wolf or my other favorite character, her buddy Nina, to help her out this time. She's sort of on her own and runs through several scenarios of the whodunnits. I like that she didn't immediately know and made mistakes along the way.Five holidays can be murder beans.....
Take out the crayons and color me impressed. Most impressive this book is. This is the book that the previous ones were threatening to be. The book pulls a bold stunt by openly putting the spotlight on the murderer, and that is something even the masters of the genre don't do. I've never seen any author do it quite like this.I also took pleasure in reading all of the book because I discovered the guilty's identity. I also could keep a tab on who was who, once I made a list of the characters. Another unique thing about this most superlative of books is that the climax is not like what usually happens. Another genre defying stunt that Krista Davis has pulled. She doesn't make the finale one on one, like a duel. This time the dynamic leading to the end is more satisfying. The way the ending unravels made the heroine almost alone but the speed and tempo of the whole affair is praiseworthy. One of the best books I've ever read. Other Cozy Mystery Writers, take note.The tips and supposed articles of Sophie and Natasha veered from the funny to the weird to the banal. At times the columnar bottom of the barrel was really being scraped. The victim of the book is the only one, and the fact that it was who it was was misdirecting for quite a while. But the open nature of the case made it possible to have a generous stab at guesswork.I liked how there are new and less repulsive characters here, most of them related to Sophie Bauer in one way or another. The mortician is no longer a fixture, which is to be thankful for. The Shawna character is in Hannah mode for much of the duration of the story. One scene where she kind of grovels or implore or whatever have you - to her literal Beau is strangely vindicating for us males - as who among us doesn't want a beaut to hang on our egos once in our life?I am constantly amazed by the diversity in the recipes and menus in this book. One learns culinary facts or even entire recipes that are startlingly new for me. Before reading these kind of books I never suspected how diverse Western cuisine could be. I mean the stuff served in restaurants are bland compared to Americana cuisine. For example the preparation for the gluhwein is fascinating. One can only imagine the taste.Was the Lane family really above the Scarboroughs? In hindsight, no. But was the working class Lane family presented in a sober, accurate, unembellished light to be judged accordingly? I saw nothing wrong with them. Of course, now that Bonnie was revealed as a two face hypocrite and a shady person...but I wonder whether the next book in the series won't be thrashier to elicit more surprise at the end. The Diva series is one I'm reluctant to leave and I will re read the earlier ones as their score are undeservedly low and I want to read them with at least one organised bone in my body. I hope the author carries out churning these delightful little books.
It's Christmas and Sophie Winston is spending the holiday with her family. When she arrives at her brother George's house, she learns a thief has stolen all their presents from under the tree. As it turns out, the neighbors' presents were also stolen. Sophie finds herself involved in another case as she tries to track down the thief and salvage Christmas.The Domestic Diva is one of my favorite cozy series. Like previous novels, the author introduces the readers to many characters, but thankfully a list of characters is noted at the beginning of the book in case one needs a reminder. They mystery moves quickly and the author throws in several twists to hide the killer's identity until the end of the novel. I'm looking forward to reading the fifth book, The Diva Haunts the House.
A charming 'culinary cosy' mystery. The Diva Cooks a Goose takes place at Christmas time in and around Old Town Alexandria Virginia. Some grinch has stolen all of the Christmas presents in the neighborhood. While the neighbors' Christmas spirit rescues Christmas for the kids, some of the residents are not so lucky.Great descriptions of the decorating themes, the Christmas treats recipes, the 'ragdoll' kittens, and a darn good mystery to boot. Everything you could ask for in a relaxing evening's read.
I do enjoy this series, but as mentioned in my review of anther book by same author the amount of food that is eaten is overwhelming. My other point of contention is the god awful clothing that the characters wear. Christmas sweaters to mention a few.
We've all had holiday seasons that don't seem to be worth all the hassle that leads up to it, but when the Christmas gifts are stolen, and unwelcome guests appear and then end up dead, that really tends to spoil the festivities.Sophie is caught up in the disastrous holiday when her brother George's neighborhood is victimized by thieves (taking even the Christmas dinner) and then her sister-in-law's father shows up with a new girlfriend. The girlfriend ends up dead but the disaster is alive and well as everyone seems to be a suspect.The twists and turns were totally entertaining!
