About this audiobook

In a Victorian London ruled by the blood-drinking elite, Perry Lowell is a logical and accomplished Nighthawk: a rogue blue blood who tracks murderers and thieves for the Guild. So when she and her charming but reckless partner, Garrett, are charged with finding a missing theater starlet, it should be a simple solve.

But with an entire theater of suspects, including a flirtatious understudy and whispers of a Clockwork Menace haunting the place, tension is brewing between the pair of them. Can they come together to solve the case-or will it be too late, when the murderer turns his gaze on Perry herself?

1.5 stars rounded up. This wasn't miserable or personally offensive or anything, but I was very disappointed in it. This series has definitely been 'romances with some mystery' but I'm not certain this fully even counts as a romance. Even a 'Happily for Now' is a bit of a stretch. And I've definitely read 'mysteries with some romance' that were much more romantic! I honestly didn't really enjoy their relationship (which was almost entirely just a working relationship anyway) and I didn't find the male lead much of a catch either. In fact I think I mildly dislike him. This was predominantly focused on a case they're working on, but even the mystery part wasn't very good. Obvious stuff was overlooked, there were holes, who 'done it' was pretty apparent. And even the world building, which has been good in this series, seemed to kind of falter. The vampires have been built up as having these special abilities and being kind of superhuman, but besides one of them being able to follow a scent trail, they were kind of lame vampires. A couple times they were outrun by mere humans(?), and their 'heightened hearing' seemed pretty piddly and human as well. You could practically just swap them out for *being* humans and besides the scent trails and occasional blood cravings, not much would even change. In fact, the parts where they were in danger would have actually been *more* interesting in that case, because none of the threats seemed likely to remove their head or heart, so I felt kinda like 'meh, they'll live'. lol. (which I haven't felt to this extent in the rest of the series, so it wasn't just that they're vampires). Goodreads lists this as 3.5, but I believe their boss changed at the end of book 3, but he's still here in this one, so I think this must actually be 2.5. Either way though, I'm not sure this actually added anything. Some of their backstory was hinted at? We've got some further insight into their relationship (I guess?), but the fact that I can't tell just by their relationship if this came before or after book 3 tells you it hasn't really progressed. It feels like the author was maybe mentally working out their backstory to set them up for book 4, but then decided to write it out, maybe just as an extra to send to the people in her newsletter or something, but then got carried away into writing a whole book. Or maybe like an early writing exercise when she was first thinking about writing the series (before she worked out what abilities vampires were going to have?) and then decided to just publish it as well. Whatever the case, I don't really see the point. =/

YES I CANNOT WAIT TO READ PERRY AND GARRETT'S STORY!!!! I love this idea of a novella to set up a book. I am so glad I can move right on to this! I love stories with tough, tomboy heroines, and am so excited for the angst!

A short prequel to the 4th book in Bec McMaster’s excellent London Steampunk series. In this novella, readers are given insight into the relationship between the hero and heroine of book four, Nighthawks Garrett Reed and Perry Lowell, as they investigate the disappearance of a young actress.

The mystery is well developed for such a short story. The characters are compelling, especially Lovecraft (who I can only assume is the titular character although he is neither a clockwork nor a menace), and there are some exciting and tension filled scenes. Nevertheless, the focus is on Garrett and Perry’s partnership and the changes in their perceptions of and feelings for one another; emotions that they are loath to admit even to themselves let alone share.

This is an entertaining read and only whets the appetite for more of Garrett and Perry. I look forward to reading their full length story very soon.

I actually liked this novella slightly more than FORGED BY DESIRE; the romantic elements were subtler, but it delivered a better rounded plot action-wise. I think my opinion of the most recent full length book would have been higher had I read this short first instead of after because it made amends for certain areas in which the other lacked. The author succeeded in fleshing out Garrett and Perry's relationship better in these 181 pages than in the former's 436. It's rare that two main protagonists get a novella and an installment within the same series, so obviously McMaster had similar thoughts. The whodunit mystery was cleverly executed, and THE CURIOUS CASE OF THE CLOCKWORK MENACE helped put into context a couple of tidbits that pop up in book 4. I'm not usually a fan of shorts because I find that as a general rule they add little if anything to the main plot arc, but in this particular instance it was a welcomed extra. I'd recommended reading this novella and FORGED BY DESIRE back-to-back for maximum enjoyment.
