- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The cover of this one put me off, but after reading some reviews and seeing it compared to other books I enjoyed, I finally picked it up--and I'm glad I did.The cover gives a hint to the book's darkness, but the fact is that the seriousness and darkness come more from the sub-plotting and psychology at work in the novel than the romance or relationship at the heart of the book. The blurb on the cover calls it 'unexpectedly poignant', and much as that description is totally at odds with the cover, there's a lot to be said for that description. This isn't a dark romance, but it is a romance that centers on a woman with a lot of darkness and abuse in her world; what makes the book work, in fact, is that it doesn't sugarcoat her life leading up to the romance, and the romance itself builds on and in the same way counteracts that darkness, allowing it to be a lot more believable than the romances I've seen that try to tackle similar territory.Absolutely, it's not a romance for everyone (or even Most romance readers), but if you read the blurb and it at all appeals to you, I'd recommend it. I'll be reading more books by Kim Jones, certainly.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Sinner's Creed was well written story about a member of an MC and the woman that he falls for. Having said that, I can also add that the book made me angry. I read stories labeled as "romance" for the escape from realism that they offer and the resulting reduction of everyday stress. This book takes tragedy and heartbreak and wraps it up in a pretty bow and calls it romance. If I want tragedy and heartbreak, I can find it in other sections of the bookstore, in the newspaper, or better yet, just by getting up in the morning and going to work. I don't know if I should blame the company who published and marketed the book or the author.
The story is about Dirk, a long-time member of the Sinner's Creed MC. Dirk believes that the things that he has seen and done killed his soul long ago and that he is destined for eternal damnation. After several brief chance encounters with Saylor, they finally get together and Dirk realizes that against all odds, he is in love. It isn't long, however, before tragedy strikes and Dirk finds that his happiness as well as his life will be short-lived.
Another aggravating aspect of the book is the preachy injection of religion that almost classifies this an inspirational story of love and redemption. Supposedly, Kim Jones tells this story from experience inside an MC, which just makes the way this story is told even harder to take.
This book has received much critical acclaim that I'm sure will keep the author writing for a long time to come, but personally, I will find it difficult to read another one of her stories.
