Contemporain de Hobbes, René Descartes est né en 1596 (et meurt en 1650). Mathématicien, physicien et philosophe français à la recherche de la vérité indiscutable, il assied sa recherche sur le célèbre : "Je pense donc je suis" et pose le problème de la conscience. Face à une époque de découvertes et de savoirs contradictoires, il se décide à aller voir dans "Le grand livre du monde". Il s'engage dans l'armée mais ne veut pas combattre et renonce à sa paye de soldat. Il écrira le "Discours de la Méthode" en quelques jours en s'éloignant de sa famille. Il a écrit aussi "Le traité des passions.
