About this audiobook

Melanie and Angie are taking a gamble by opening their first franchise of the bakery, and where better to hit the jackpot than Vegas? Holly Hartzmark is a former showgirl who's looking to bring Mel and Angie's sweet treats to Sin City, but Mel isn't so sure she's ready to hand her recipes over to a complete stranger-especially one as brash as Holly. But after the potential bakery location gets blown up, Mel begins seeing another side to Holly. Determined to help a kindred spirit, Mel sets out to discover who is trying to keep the bakery from cashing in. But with a murderous mischief maker on the loose, the odds are stacking up against a happy ending for Mel and her friends...

I bought this in a rush, not realizing that it was well in to the series and therefore I didn't know any of the characters or the back stories. The mystery was ok; I figured it out early. It was rather obvious, but the story was good.

What more could you want than an Elvis convention and a stay at the Blue Hawaiian when Mel, Angie and Tate make a quick trip to Vegas to see about a franchising opportunity for their cupcake business. Holly is a showgirl hoping to become the first franchisee, if Mel can put her stamp of approval on both the location and the owner. Things blow up rather quickly and the twists, particularly as I neared the end, kept me guessing right up to the end. I enjoyed the nod to one of McKinlay's other series too.

I would have rated this higher, but there is something really wrong with the audio. At the end of every few sentences, the volume almost cuts out the sound of the last word! What in the world?!?!

Melanie Cooper has been against the idea of franchising her bakery, Fairy Tale Cupcakes, and even more so when she meets the potential new owner Holly Hartzmark, a Las Vegas show girl. But Mel soon learns that there is more to Holly than meets the eye, especially when the first location they look at for the new bakery is blown up in an explosion that looks deliberate. Other events make it obvious that someone is determined to stop the new bakery no matter what the cost - even if it means killing someone.“Vanilla Beaned” is the nicely done eighth book in Jenn McKinlay's Cupcake Bakery Cozy Mystery Series. Having a book in a cozy mystery series set in a different location than usual can be risky but McKinlay pulls it off perfectly. She does a great job with the Las Vegas location using it wonderfully without going over the top which she sometimes has a habit of doing (I thought she might go over the top once or twice in this book but she didn't – hooray!) I love Holly as a character - this is a great storyline that adds much to the mystery (and presumably future books in the series). The book has a nice mixture of humor (including a subtle shout out to McKinlay's Hat Shop Cozy Mystery Series) and tension (there are some very tense moments in this book). The ending of the book made me want to laugh, cry, and groan at the same time! As for the mystery itself, it is well plotted with plenty of suspects and I was surprised when the killer was revealed.“Vanilla Beaned” is another nice cozy mystery by Jenn McKinlay.

Mel is dragging her feet in franchising her bakery, but after an initial disastrous meeting with the showgirl who wants to a baker, she comes around. But somebody seems eager to stop the transaction, even to the point of destruction and murder. Narrowing the suspects means finding out who the real target is. The mystery is strong in this book, and the romance level between Angie and Tante has been cranked up a notch, even as Mel and Joe can’t seem to work out their differences. Well done with more character development, this installment in the series will leave readers wanting more.
