About this audiobook

The gorgeous and darkly compelling sequel to The Crown’s Game—perfect for fans of Red Queen and Shadow and Bone. A New York Times bestseller!

Magic is growing, shadows are rising, and the throne is at stake…

Russia is on the brink of great change. Pasha’s coronation approaches, and Vika is now the Imperial Enchanter, but the role she once coveted may be more difficult—and dangerous—than she ever expected.

Pasha is grappling with his own problems—his legitimacy is in doubt, the girl he loves loathes him, and he believes his best friend is dead. When a challenger to the throne emerges—and with the magic in Russia growing rapidly—Pasha must do whatever it takes to keep his position and protect his kingdom.

For Nikolai, the ending of the Crown’s Game stung deeply. Although he just managed to escape death, Nikolai remains alone, a shadow hidden in a not-quite-real world of his own creation. But when he’s given a second chance at life—tied to a dark price—Nikolai must decide just how far he’s willing to go to return to the world.

With revolution on the rise, dangerous new magic rearing up, and a tsardom up for the taking, Vika, Nikolai, and Pasha must fight—or face the destruction of not only their world but also themselves.

Fun and strangely unputdownable, but not a personal favourite by any means.

This seemed like it was headed towards a huge disaster for a long time but ended much better than I'd hoped. The narrator did a good job.

Talk about action, decide, devotion and a death. This book really had all you, as a young adult or older, could desire in a great tale. Well written , as most fables are, this story takes you on a journey to a culture rich in history and magic. Truly recommend this for any patient reader, for it takes a while to get into, but rewards in the end.

This book was a hard one for me to decipher. The rich atmosphere and lush scenery made it elegant and classic, but the plot seemed to lack a bit. I went back and forth trying to decide whether it was worth three or four stars and after much thought, I decided four it is.

The plot didn’t have as much romance as I hoped for, but the magic and fantasy level was off the charts. It was easy to get swept up in the book world and the characters were so intricately weaved and perfect. I loved their connection to one another and the delicacy of their feelings. I think you could probably say it’s a long triangle, but in the end it’s more of a soul triangle.

I really can’t compare this book to any others for it’s in a world of its own. I know it’s a YA read, but I could easily see adults enjoying the story as well. The content is mature and the writing is top notch. I can’t wait to see what new words this Author comes up with.

This is a very worthwhile sequel to a fantastic book. If you're into magic with a touch of historical fiction set in the time of the Russian monarchy, this is a great choice.

I devoured the first book in this series and jumped right into the second. I have to say the second installment is far darker than the first one. Nikolai's character, in particular, is harder to engage with as he spirals downward.I often find that second and subsequent books in a series don't engage me in the same way as the original does. I don't know if it's because the newness has worn off or I've already imagined other endings for the characters. This sequel did satisfy me though and I felt a certain sense of closer at the end. Great series - I recommend you give it a go!
