About this audiobook

From the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of When I'm Gone comes a compelling novel of a bond between sisters, tested by tragedy…

Ellie Brown thought she'd finally escaped her stifling hometown of Broadlands, Illinois; med school was supposed to be her ticket out. But when her father has a stroke, she must return home to share his care with her older sister, Amelia, who's busy with her own family. Working as a paramedic, Ellie's days are monotonous, driving an ambulance through streets she'd hoped never to see again.

Until a 911 dispatch changes everything. The address: her sister's house. Rushing to the scene, Ellie discovers that Amelia and her husband, Steve, have been shot in a home invasion. After Amelia is rushed to the hospital, Ellie tries to make sense of the tragedy. But what really happened inside her sister's house becomes less and less clear. As Amelia hangs on in critical condition, Ellie uncovers dark revelations about her family's past that challenge her beliefs about those closest to her…and force her to question where her devotions truly lie.

Wow did this book have a jaw dropping ending! It came out of nowhere! I had my doubts but they were nothing like what really happened in this book.I'm not going to be able to tell you a lot of specifics without including a spoiler. So I am just going to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Ellie and Amelia are two very likable characters and are sisters. Ellie has been away at college but comes back home to their small town when her father has a stroke. Now Ellie, having given up med school, is a paramedic. She couldn't pass the strenuous tests to be a fireman which include carrying a body, but she would have made a good one. Besides that, she helps take care of her father along with her sister, Amelia.Amelia is married with two children to an ex-firefighter that now owns his own roofing company. The company is ran out of their house. Amelia is also a concert cellist, doing the odd wedding here and there. There's not a real symphony in their small town, so she takes smaller gigs when she can get them. She also helps out with her husband's company and, of course, runs the household. The author did a great job with the characters and with the introduction of them and their lives. However, when the plot twists to that final turn, it was a crazy, out of left field turn. Jaw dropping.A great read that I thoroughly enjoyed! Thanks to Lake Union Publishing and Net Galley for providing me with a free e-galley in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

My heart is really pumping faster than usual. In "Working Fire" by Emily Bleeker, I have read about two sisters who watch their lives fall apart. Two sisters who lead good lives: They love their father and care for him during a very difficult illness. These sisters help each other in any way possible. One sister loves her husband and daughters with all her heart. The other sister is a paramedic. She wants to spend her life rescuing people in her community. At the same time, she gives her love to a soon to be husband and her brother - in - law and nieces. Both women share a friendship with one man who is an artist. Through sacrifice, both women want to make life better for themselves and other people. However, their good life was changing in the shadows somewhere. Friends began to change and a marriage became strained. Life became full of ghostly shadows. There are old secrets, and daily needs become impossible to bear. All of a sudden, life is a series of open ended questions. In the end, it is about walking cautiously through life and realizing we have no control over it. Today is different from yesterday, and tomorrow is unknown.

Ellie Brown had finally escaped Broadlands, her home town, and was studying medicine when – “life happened” and called her back to the town she thought she had escaped. Her sister, Amelia Saxton, was happily married to her ex-firefighter husband, living in Broadlands and then “life happened” and she and Ellie found themselves caring for their father, the former fire chief of Broadlands who had suffered a stroke. Throw in Steve who is Amelia’s husband, Caleb who is Amelia’s childhood boyfriend, Collin who is Ellie’s fiancée and Caleb’s brother, and Travis and you have the major players in this crime thriller. There are plot twists and the pieces don’t fall into place quickly but when they do it is one of the messiest situations ever contrived. And therein lies the problem. So much get overlooked, forgiven and washed away with a thought. So much is unspoken and not questioned. Possible? Maybe but not probable, reality has been suspended. And did I mention that I absolutely hated the ending. The effect of the final pages dissolved my belief in the sanity of the protagonist.

MY REVIEW OF "WORKING FIRE" By Emily BleekerI would like to thank NetGalley, Lake Union Publishing and Emily Bleeker for the Advanced Reading Copy of "Working Fire" by Emily Bleeker.  The genres for this book are Fiction, Mystery, Thriller and Suspense. The timeline of this story is set mostly in the present with explanations of events that happened in the past, that are pertinent to the storyline.I appreciate that Emily Bleeker has written an intriguing, and captivating story, discussing the importance of family, and the importance of Paramedics, EMT's, Firefighters, and the Police. There are twists and turns, suspense, betrayals, and secrets that are devastating. The author describes her characters as complex and complicated. Some characters are not who they seem to be. As the storyline progresses, some character are unpredictable and unstable.   Emily Bleeker is a paramedic, who gets a call that there has been a shooting at a familiar address. Emily's sister Amelia and her husband and children live at that address. Everything that Emily has believed in, makes her question everything. Who can you trust? This is an intense and suspenseful story that will leave you on edge.  The ending was surprising to me. I would recommend this novel and look forward to reading more books from this author.

I really loved When I'm Gone (definitely recommend), so I was excited to see a new book from Emily Bleeker. This book did not disappoint. I loved the story, the writing style and the characters, okay maybe not all of them. The book alternates between sisters, Amelia and Ellie. Ellie is during the present, while Amelia's story line leads up to the day of the shooting. Ellie dropped out of med school to come home and help her sister take care of their father. While grocery shopping with her paramedic partner, Chet, they get a call that there were shots fired at Amelia's address. The whole story leads up to what happened in the house and why Amelia, her husband and a guy in a ski mask were shot. I have to say, I did not like Amelia's husband Steve from the very first moment. There was just something about him, the worst part was Ellie idolized him. Then there's Randy. He just moved to the area and wants Amelia to be a real estate agent. Caleb, Amelia's high school boyfriend, works for her husband's roofing company. He clearly still cares about Amelia.I knew there had to be something shady going on with Steve and his business, since truck tires kept being slashed, he happened to get an insurance policy out on Amelia and one of their warehouses burned down. I hated how he acted like it was an inconvenience for Amelia to take care of her father. Ellie wanted to help her sister as much as she could. She even sneaked into the morgue to try to identify the dead man. I definitely recommend this book and enjoyed reading about the sisters. Thanks to NetGalley, Lake Union Publishing and the author, Emily Bleeker, for a free electronic ARC of this novel.
